Does conal prime CANAL more than cinal? Masked phonological priming effects in Spanish with the lexical decision task.

2005

Evidence for an early involvement of phonology in word identification usually relies on the comparison between a target word preceded by a homophonic prime and an orthographic control (rait-RATE vs. raut-RATE). This comparison rests on the assumption that the two control primes are equally orthographically similar to the target. Here, we tested for phonological effects with a masked priming paradigm in which orthographic similarity between priming conditions was perfectly controlled at the letter level and in which identification of the prime was virtually at chance for both stimulus onset asynchronies (SOAs) (66 and 50 msec). In the key prime-target pairs, each prime differed from the targ…

Public and Private: Negotiating Memories of the Korean War

2016

In February 2014, pictures of elderly Koreans, North and South, reunited after more than 60 years of separation, saturated the international media. The images captured the emotional moments when long-divided family members met again at an official reunification gathering. Some tightly embraced their missed relatives and burst into tears; a 92-year-old South Korean man danced with his arms stretched out, beaming with joy. The majority of the 83 citizens of the Republic of Korea (ROK) who collectively traveled to the meeting place at the Geumgang Mountain resort in North Korea were in their seventies or eighties. Several of the aging attendants faced health troubles coping with the strenuous …

Rigid and flexible modes of coping: Related to coping style?

1993

Abstract This study examined dispositional and situative antecedents of vigilant and avoidant coping behavior. Seventy-two subjects were classified in coping style on the basis of their responses to the vigilance and cognitive avoidance scales of the Mainz Coping Inventory (MCI, Krohne, 1989), and alternatively, on their trait anxiety and defensiveness scores (cf. Weinberger, Schwartz, & Davidson, 1979). In a subsequent laboratory task, subjects were exposed to various conditions of predictability of an aversive event. In anticipation of an aversive loud tone, coping behavior was operationally defined as choosing to listen either to a warning channel (i.e., vigilance) or instead to music (i…

Psychosocial and behavioural factors in heart transplant candidates--an overview.

2007

Mortality among heart transplant (HTX) candidates remains high. This review of the literature shows that psychosocial characteristics like depression, social isolation and coping strategies contribute to morbidity and mortality in heart failure (HF) patients, and may also be relevant to the prognosis of HTX candidates. Based on the research to date, physical activity favourably affects subjective and objective parameters not only in HF patients, but also in HTX candidates. Depression is prevalent among HTX candidates, especially in ischaemic patients, and seems to be related to earlier transplantation. Findings on the effects of depression on pretransplant mortality are conflicting. Not muc…

Cell-List based Molecular Dynamics on Many-Core Processors: A Case Study on Sunway TaihuLight Supercomputer

2020

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are playing an increasingly important role in several research areas. The most frequently used potentials in MD simulations are pair-wise potentials. Due to the memory wall, computing pair-wise potentials on many-core processors are usually memory bounded. In this paper, we take the SW26010 processor as an exemplary platform to explore the possibility to break the memory bottleneck by improving data reusage via cell-list-based methods. We use cell-lists instead of neighbor-lists in the potential computation, and apply a number of novel optimization methods. Theses methods include: an adaptive replica arrangement strategy, a parameter profile data structur…

Conservation aspects for chasmophytic species: Phenological behavior and seed strategies of the Central Apennine threatened endemismMoehringia papulo…

2012

Abstract Chasmophytic vegetation growing on the cracks of cliffs in the Mediterranean and in the Euro-Siberian phytogeographic regions shows a great regional diversity, with a large number of endemic plant species, many of them endangered and at risk of extinction. Moehringia papulosa is an example of a threatened plant living in this kind of habitat. It is an endemism of the Marche region in central Italy, whose natural populations are considered as critically endangered (CR) under the IUCN criteria and the habitat is protected by the E.U. (Directive 92/43/EEC) with the habitat 8210 “calcareous rocky slopes with chasmophytic vegetation”. The phenology of natural populations was analyzed, s…

Growth form matters – Crustose lichens on dead wood are sensitive to forest management

2022

Lichens have a vital role in forest ecosystems and they are a threatened group in boreal forests. However, the conservation ecology of the total lichen community has very rarely been studied. Here we studied lichen species and communities, including macrolichens (=foliose and fruticose growth forms) and rarely studied crustose li-chens, on decaying wood in boreal spruce-dominated forests in Finland. We also studied obligate lignicoles that grow only on dead wood and are mostly crustose in growth form. Species richness and community composition were examined on decaying logs and natural or cut stumps of Picea abies at different decay stages (2-5) in 14 stands, half of which were natural or s…

Czerwona lista porostów zagrożonych na Śląsku Opolskim i Górnym Śląsku [Red List of threatened lichens in Opole Silesia and Upper Silesia]

2014

The thirth regional list of threatened and allied fungi is presented. The list is a result of investigation studies in Opole Silesia and Upper Silesia in S Poland. The status of threat to the lichen and allied fungi species used has been determined according to the IUCN Red List Categories in version 3. l (2001). The data obtained were compared with historical ones. While assigning given lichen species to suitable categories of threat the geographic criterium of their occurrence ranges was accepted because most source data from the study area concerns the distribution and frequency of species. The Red List includes 536 taxa of lichens, lichenicolous and saprobic fungi, which constitute 72.9…

VegItaly: Technical features, crucial issues and some solutions

2012

VegItaly is at present the largest Italian vegetation database. It is the result of a collaborative project aspiring to represent a major reference for the Italian vegetation scientists. The paper emphasizes its benefits for phytosociological data management and describes the solutions adopted to solve several technical problems, like the treatment of different vegetation stratification systems, the conversion of vegetation cover values, taxonomic and syntaxonomic issues, data import and access. The structure of the taxonomic list produced to support the storing of data is described. It allows an easy management of synonymic relationships and is constantly updated according to new publicati…
