Impact of changing forest management on soil organic matter in low mountain acid media

2002

The impacts of changes in vegetation cover from native deciduous forest to Douglas fir ( Pseudotsuga menziesii Franco) and of human activity on soil organic matter (SOM) characteristics were studied in two low mountain areas of east-central France. No striking difference in soil type (Dystric Cambisol) was found between the two sites. Humus-rich horizons were of the “Dysmull” and “Moder” types, regardless of the nature of the bedrock. Contrary to a common affirmation concerning other coniferous species, Douglas fir had no negative effect on soil pH and humification degree of SOM, with respect to the native beech vegetation. Pruning and partial clearing slightly improved humification, espect…

Short-term response of the Ca cycle of a montane forest in Ecuador to low experimental CaCl2 additions

2013

The tropical montane forests of the E Andean cordillera in Ecuador receive episodic Sahara-dust inputs particularly increasing Ca deposition. We added CaCl2 to isolate the effect of Ca deposition by Sahara dust to tropical montane forest from the simultaneously occurring pH effect. We examined components of the Ca cycle at four control plots and four plots with added Ca (2 x 5kg ha(-1) Ca annually as CaCl2) in a random arrangement. Between August 2007 and December 2009 (four applications of Ca), we determined Ca concentrations and fluxes in litter leachate, mineral soil solution (0.15 and 0.30 m depths), throughfall, and fine litterfall and Al concentrations and speciation in soil solutions…

CPMAS 13C NMR Characterization of Leaves and Litters from the Reafforestated Area of Mustigarufi in Sicily (Italy)

2010

Reafforestation is generally based on the planting of exotic fast growing tree species suitable for adapting to even harsh environments. Once the introduced plants ameliorate soil conditions, they can be progressively replaced by au- tochthonous plant species. Reafforestation is applied worldwide. However, only few studies on the effect of reafforesta- tion on lands from Mediterranean regions are available. This paper reports the characterization by cross polarization 13C NMR spectroscopy of fresh leaves and superficial litters from a reafforestated area in central Sicily (Italy). NMR assign- ment is attempted. A differentiation among the molecular systems within leaves and litters is also …

ASSESSMENT OF BEACH LITTER ALONG THE COAST: CASE STUDY OF THE CITY OF CADIZ (SPAIN)

2016

The United Nations Environment Program defines as waste all the persistent marine debris deposited or abandoned in the sea (marine litter) and beach (beach litter) environment. Thus including all substances or products abandoned or involuntarily dispersed into the sea or on the coastline. It has been estimated that, all around the world, about 10 million tons of waste coming from domestic, commercial and industrial activities reach the seas every year. Moreover, waste floating adrift in the seas and oceans can be carried very far away, reaching different places from the ones they were originated. Further, damage may result to various human activities and equipment, such as navigation, energ…

Ambivalent Déjà-vu: World War II in the poetry of the Northern Irish Troubles

2021

This article addresses how the poetry of the Northern Irish Troubles enters into a dialogue with the memory of World War II. Poems by Michael Longley, Seamus Heaney, Derek Mahon, and Sinéad Morrissey are analysed, showing how World War II is a controversial source of comparison for these poets. While World War II provides important ways of framing the suffering and claustrophobia of the Northern Irish conflict, evident differences also mean that such comparisons are handled warily and with some irony. The poems are highly self-conscious utterances that seek to unsettle and develop generic strategies in the light of traumatic suffering. This essay draws on Michael Rothberg’s concept of mult…

Muslim Otherness in Post-9/11 Novels A postcolonial outlook on the fictional representation of Muslim otherness in post 9/11 novels.

2020

Master´s thesis in English (EN501) The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001,led many Americans to vilify Muslims and Islam. Indeed, 9/11 bequeathed to the U.S. a new category of evil other, a decade and more after the “evil empire” of the USSR had been vanquished, and the cold war concluded. This thesis will investigate how this new other is represented in three post-9/11 novels, Mohsin Hamid’s The Reluctant Fundamentalist (2007), Amy Waldman’s The Submission (2011),and H. M. Naqvi’s Home Boy (2010). These novels will be examined partly through the lens of postcolonial theory, as represented by Edward Said, Mohammad Samiei, and Robert Young. This thesis will demonstrate how the selected n…

“We’re Using Up the Earth. It’s Almost Gone ”Apocalyptic fiction, environmental awareness, and critique of anthropocentric and capitalist society in M…

2020

Master`s thesis in English (EN501) This thesis explores Margaret Atwood’s novels Oryxand Crake (2003), The Year of the Flood (2009), and MaddAddam (2013),and their criticism of anthropocentric and capitalist society. The novels depicta world where the planet has reached its limits due to humanity’s overpopulation, greed, and exploitation of nature. This thesis analyzes the books with an ecocritical lens and views Atwood’s representation of the environment in her apocalyptic narrative. Through a close reading of the trilogy, the analysis considers the novels’apocalyptic characteristics in a world where a virus has annihilated the human population, and genetically engineered creatures are left…
