Noninvasive assessment of liver fibrosis in thalassaemia major patients by transient elastography (TE) - lack of interference by iron deposition.

2009

The correlation between liver stiffness, measured by transient elastography, liver fibrosis, using the histological METAVIR score, and iron overload, measured by atomic absorption spectrometry was evaluated in 56 homozygous-b-thalassaemics. Liver stiffness increased proportionally to liver fibrosis staging (r = 0Æ70; P > 0Æ001) independently of liver iron concentration (r = 0Æ01; P = 0Æ932). The area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve for prediction of cirrhosis was 0Æ997 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0Æ925–1Æ000) with cut-off of 13 kPa with 100% sensitivity (95% CI: 69Æ0–100Æ0) and 95% specificity (95% CI: 84Æ2–99Æ3). Transient elastography is a reliable non-invasive tool f…

Improving on the Development of the Downtown Area as a Direction for the Spatial Policy of Opole

2018

Śródmieście stanowi niezwykle cenny, historycznie ukształtowany obszar zabudowy mieszkaniowo- usługowej. W polityce przestrzennej miasta zbyt mało uwagi poświęca się jednak zachowaniu bądź kształtowaniu odpowiednich warunków życia mieszkańców śródmieść przy jednoczesnym uwzględnieniu i ochronie walorów kompozycyjno-estetycznych. Powszechny chaos w zagospodarowaniu terenów śródmiejskich i brak odpowiednich regulacji w gospodarce przestrzennej prowadzi do powstawania licznych konfliktów i w efekcie do wycofywania się funkcji mieszkaniowej z centrum miasta. Celem artykułu jest zidentyfikowanie problemów występujących w śródmieściu oraz wykazanie, że możliwe jest poprawienie warunków życia mies…

From sustainability to sustainable development: the role of food banks in food security in Uganda : a case study of the hunger project food bank - Mb…

2014

Master thesis in development management - University of Agder 2014 The purpose of this study is to identify the role the food bank plays for food security, sustainable livelihoods and building resilience to climate change among smallholder farmers in Uganda. The aim is to investigate how the food bank in Uganda operates in relation to food security and smallholder farmers. Much of the studies on food banks reveal that food banks are merely institutions that offer emergency food supplies to the hungry and are not agencies aiming at food security. These studies have, however, been based on the context of developed countries and no study has been conducted to establish the role of food banks i…

Community Resilience to Cyclone Disasters in Coastal Bangladesh

2016

Bangladesh is one of the poorest and most disaster-prone countries in the world. To address both problems simultaneously, sustainable livelihoods (SL) could be better connected with disaster risk reduction (DRR). For this purpose, one initiative implemented in Bangladesh is called the Vulnerability to Resilience (V2R) programme which ran from 2013 to 2016. This programme was primarily initiated and funded by the British Red Cross in a consortium with the Swedish Red Cross and the German Red Cross. This article presents the first evaluation of the V2R programme with three objectives. The first objective was to measure whether the selected communities have achieved community resilience charac…

Correlation between Cognition and Balance among Middle-Aged and Older Adults Observed through a Tai Chi Intervention program

2020

Background: Age-associated decline in cognition and balance may cause severe ability loss for daily living activities among middle-aged and older adults. The relationship between cognition and balance in this aging population remains to be explored. Objective: The present study Is exploratory in nature and aimed to examine the relationship between balance (both static and dynamic components) and global cognitive function among middle-aged and older adults through Tai Chi (TC) practice as a research avenue. Methods: A short-term (12 weeks) intervention of TC was conducted among middle-aged and older adults in the community setting. Global cognitive function (using the Chinese version of the …

Changes in the standard of living of chosen countries that joined the European Union after 2004

2018

Changes in the Standard of Living in the EU Member States between 2005 and 2012, with Particular Emphasis on Poland and the Czech Republic

2016

This chapter is dedicated to the issues relating to changes in the standard of living recorded in 25 EU countries, in particular in Poland and the Czech Republic. Given the availability of comparable and relevant statistical data, the standard of living was studied between 2005 and 2012. The study was conducted with the use of taxonomic method – Hellwig’s synthetic measure. The results indicated that in 2012 Poland and the Czech Republic recorded a growth in the standard of living compared to 2005. Between 2005 and 2008, Poland was in the group of countries with a relatively low standard of living. It was not until the 2012, that it entered the group of countries with a moderate standard of…

Endotrophin, a pro-peptide of Type VI collagen, is a biomarker of survival in cirrhotic patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

2021

Aim: Type VI collagen, is emerging as a signaling collagen originating from different types of fibroblasts. A specific fragment of Type VI collagen, the pro-peptide, is also known as the hormone endotrophin. We hypothesized that this fibroblast hormone would be of particular relevance in cancer types with a high amount of fibrosis activity, namely for outcome in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cirrhotic patients. Patients & methods: Plasma C6M, PRO-C6 and alphafeto-protein (AFP) were assessed in 309 patients with mixed etiologies (hepatitis C, hepatitis B, alcohol and nonalcoholic fatty liver) diagnosed as cirrhotics, cirrhotics with HCC, noncirrhotics and healthy controls. Progression-f…

Developing liver spheroids for elucidating the role of colorectal cancer-derived smallextracellular vesicles in the pre-metastatic niche formation

2022

Introduction: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the third most common tumor in the world frequently associated with liver metastasiscausing unfavorable prognosis. A recent study performed in our laboratory has demonstrated that CRC small extracellular vesi-cles (SEVs) induce an epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) of hepatocytes (heps) driving them to actively participate inthe pre-metastatic niche formation, probably contributing to form a liver fibrotic microenvironment. Since 2D cell cultures par-tially reflect the structural complexity of the in vivo microenvironment to give more power to our functional model, we switchedto use hepatocyte spheroids (HeSPHs), which can give us more proper…
