X-ray Computed Tomography for Capillary Collapse of Loose Unsaturated Sand
2016
Abstract The collapse of unsaturated soils consists of the reduction in volume upon wetting at constant total stress. Several studies at the macro scale outline the influence of initial void ratio, confining pressure and matric suction on the onset of collapse of standard laboratory specimens. Conversely, few observations at the micro scale are available in the literature, although the influence of the particles arrangement and intergranular bonding has been formerly supposed. The collapse of fine sand derived by a pyroclastic soil of Southern Italy is investigated in this paper at the microscale using the X-ray Computed Tomography. The experimental procedure, formerly tested on similar pyr…
Lithium Cation-Catalyzed Benzene Diels-Alder Reaction: Insights on the Molecular Mechanism Within the Molecular Electron Density Theory.
2020
The lithium cation Li+-catalyzed Diels-Alder (DA) reactions of benzene toward a series of acetylenes of improved nucleophilicity can be described within the context of the molecular electron density theory (MEDT) at the ωB97XD/6-311G(d,p) level. Conceptual density functional theory indices characterize the crown ether solvated complex benzene-lithium Bz-Li-Cro as a superelectrophile. Coordination of a lithium cation to benzene does not change substantially the electron localization function electronic structure of benzene. The DA reaction of Bz-Li-Cro with acetylene shows a reduction of the energy of activation of 6.9 kcal·mol-1, which is not sufficient for the reaction to take place, thus …

Evidence for an intra- and extraplastidic pre-chorismate pathway.
1982
Pea plants grown under different conditions of cultivation, and eight different plant species with variegated leaves were used to study the intracellular localization of shikimate oxidoreductase (EC 1.1.1.25), the marker enzyme of the pre-chorismate pathway. The two series of experiments indicated an intra-and an extraplastidic compartimentalization of the enzyme, and both enzyme activities are regulated differentially. While the extraplastidic activity is permanently demonstrable, the intraplastidic activity is subject to the plants' developmental state and also depends on both illumination and fertilization.
RNA-controlled nucleocytoplasmic shuttling of mRNA decay factors regulates mRNA synthesis and initiates a novel mRNA decay pathway
2021
AbstractmRNA level is controlled by factors that mediate both mRNA synthesis and decay, including the exonuclease Xrn1 - a major mRNA synthesis and decay factor. Here we show that nucleocytoplasmic shuttling of Xrn1 and of some of its associated mRNA decay factors plays a key role in determining both mRNA synthesis and decay. Shuttling is regulated by RNA-controlled binding of the karyopherin Kap120 to two nuclear localization sequences (NLSs) in Xrn1. The decaying RNA binds and masks NLS1, establishing a link between mRNA decay and Xrn1 shuttling. Mutations in the two NLSs, which prevent Xrn1 import, compromise transcription and, unexpectedly, also the cytoplasmic decay of ∼50% of the cell…
Enzyme Cytochemistry of Fungi
1973
Summary The results of a great number of investigationshave shown that enzyme cytochemical methods, which have been developed for the study of animal and human histology and cytology, can be successfully used for the study of enzyme patterns in yeasts, moulds, slime moulds, dermatophytes, phytopathogenic fungi and basidiomycetes. Whereas with the older, relatively unspecific procedures only presence or absence of enzymes could be studied, improved techniques allow the examination of the intracellular localization of enzymes under the light and especially the electron microscope. The results of those investigations are described together with methodological aspects of cultivation, incubation…
Asialofetuin Liposomes for Receptor-Mediated Gene Transfer into Hepatic Cells
2003
Publisher Summary The liver is an excellent organ for gene transfer in treating a wide variety of diseases that affect liver function. It is an ideal organ for a high amount of expression of therapeutic genes and efficient systemic distribution of the resulting therapeutic proteins secreted into the bloodstream. For strategies of liver-destined gene therapy, the liver sinusoid endothelium contains pores with a mean diameter of 100 nm, which allow small vectors to leave the blood circulation and reach the hepatocytes. The preparation of asialofetuin–liposomes targeted to hepatocytes can be made by covalent coupling of asialofetuin glycoprotein (ASF) onto the liposome surface, by the use of h…
