Considerare i cittadini i primi alleati
2016
Perineural Invasion is a Strong Prognostic Moderator in Ampulla of Vater Carcinoma
2018
Objective Ampulla of Vater carcinoma (AVC) has a broad spectrum of different prognoses. As such, new moderators of survival are urgently needed. We aimed at clarifying the prognostic role of perineural invasion in AVC. Methods Using PubMed and SCOPUS databases, we conducted the first systematic review and meta-analysis on this topic. Results Analyzing 29 articles for a total of 2379 patients, we found that the presence of perineural invasion increased the risk of all-cause mortality more than 2 times (relative risk [RR], 2.07; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.78-2.42 [P < 0.0001]; hazard ratio [HR], 2.72; 95% CI, 1.86-3.97 [P < 0.0001]), of cancer-specific mortality more than 6 times (…
Anal canal mixed adenoneuroendocrine carcinoma in a young patient misdiagnosed as anal abscess.
2021
Mixed neuroendocrine non-neuroendocrine neoplasms (MiNENs) are rare tumours of gastrointestinal tract, extremely rare in anal canal. We report a case of misdiagnosed MiNEN in a 38-year-old woman initially conservatively treated for a supposed anal fistula. In a second proctological evaluation, biopsy of the anal neoformation was performed and the histological specimen diagnosed a MiNEN. The complete staging showed a disseminate disease and the patient started a chemotherapy schedule. After 6 months, stable disease was revealed at the last imaging performed and radical surgery was offered to the patient that is actually on oncological follow-up without recurrence at 1 year.

The Electronic Structure of Hexagonal BaCoO3
1999
Abstract TB–LMTO–ASA band structure calculations within the local spin density approximation have been performed to explain the magnetic and transport properties of BaCoO3. The calculations predict a magnetic and metallic ground state as energetically favored. BaCoO3 shows no long-range magnetic ordering, however, and only poor conductivity. The magnetic energy is low and the compound shows glassy susceptibility behavior at low temperatures. From the band structure we find Mott–Hubbard localization to be unlikely, and instead propose Anderson localization as a possible origin of the observed behavior. Calculations on slightly distorted structures exclude the possibility of a Peierls distort…
Polar bosons in one-dimensional disordered optical lattices
2013
We analyze the effects of disorder and quasi-disorder on the ground-state properties of ultra-cold polar bosons in optical lattices. We show that the interplay between disorder and inter-site interactions leads to rich phase diagrams. A uniform disorder leads to a Haldane-insulator phase with finite parity order, whereas the density-wave phase becomes a Bose-glass at very weak disorder. For quasi-disorder, the Haldane insulator connects with a gapped generalized incommesurate density wave without an intermediate critical region.
The treatment of inguinal hernia in 'one day surgery'. Personal experience
2000
Background. Personal experience in the treatment of inguinal hernia in 'One day Surgery' is reported. Methods. Design: Retrospective evaluation of cases treated in a twelve months period. The follow-up has been programmed at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after the treatment. Setting: General, thoracic and oncological surgery, Department of Surgical and Anatomical Disciplines. Polyclinic, University of Palermo. Subjects: 54 patients aged between 17 and 86 years (middle age 51.9), 48 male have been treated; in 3 cases recurrent hernias were found. Interventions: In every case Trabucco's procedure with local anaesthesia has been performed. Premedication with Midazolam 10 mg i.v. has been associated. M…
High‐nuclearity mixed‐valence magnetic clusters : A general solution of the double exchange problem
1996
We report here a general solution of the double‐exchange problem in the high‐nuclearity mixed valence systems containing arbitrary number P of the electrons delocalized over the network of N (P<N) localized spins. The developed approach is based on the successive (chainlike) spin‐coupling scheme and takes full advantage from the quantum angular momentum theory. In the framework of this approach the closed‐form analytical expressions are deduced for the matrix elements of the double exchange interaction, two‐electron transfer, and three‐center interaction that can be referred to as the potential exchange transfer. For the arbitrary nuclearity mixed‐valence systems the matrix elements of all …
NMR Spectroscopic Evidence for the Intermediacy of XeF3− in XeF2/F− Exchange, Attempted Syntheses and Thermochemistry of XeF3− Salts, and Theoretical…
2010
The existence of the trifluoroxenate(II) anion, XeF(3)(-), had been postulated in a prior NMR study of the exchange between fluoride ion and XeF(2) in CH(3)CN solution. The enthalpy of activation for this exchange, ΔH(⧧), has now been determined by use of single selective inversion (19)F NMR spectroscopy to be 74.1 ± 5.0 kJ mol(-1) (0.18 M) and 56.9 ± 6.7 kJ mol(-1) (0.36 M) for equimolar amounts of [N(CH(3))(4)][F] and XeF(2) in CH(3)CN solvent. Although the XeF(3)(-) anion has been observed in the gas phase, attempts to prepare the Cs(+) and N(CH(3))(4)(+) salts of XeF(3)(-) have been unsuccessful, and are attributed to the low fluoride ion affinity of XeF(2) and fluoride ion solvation in…
Liquid structure of a water-in-salt electrolyte with a remarkably asymmetric anion
2021
Water-in-salt systems, i.e., super-concentrated aqueous electrolytes, such as lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (21 mol/kgwater), have been recently discovered to exhibit unexpectedly large electrochemical windows and high lithium transference numbers, thus paving the way to safe and sustainable charge storage devices. The peculiar transport features in these electrolytes are influenced by their intrinsically nanoseparated morphology, stemming from the anion hydrophobic nature and manifesting as nanosegregation between anions and water domains. The underlying mechanism behind this structure-dynamics correlation is, however, still a matter of strong debate. Here, we enhance the apol…
