The impact of pictorial health warnings on tobacco products in smokers behaviours and knowledge: The first quasi-experimental field trial after the i…
2019
Background. The aim of the study was to evaluate in the Italian smokers, the effects of implementation of the law about Pictorial Health Warnings (PHWs) on tobacco products.Methods. A quasi-experimental longitudinal design was conducted between 2016 and 2017. The data were collected before (pre-PHW/Wave 1) and after (post-PHW/Wave 2) the implementation of the law. The adopted questionnaire included impact of advertisement (Label Impact Index, LII), quitting behavior and knowledge of tobacco related diseases.Results. 455 respondents completed both the Waves. 7.7% of smokers declared to have stopped smoking in Wave 2 and 29% of these declared the PHWs as one of the reasons to quit. The knowle…
The long-term effect of job mobility on workers' mental health: a propensity score analysis
2022
Abstract Objectives The main purpose of this longitudinal study was to elucidate the impact of external job mobility, due to a change of employer, on mental health. Methods A cohort of Belgian employees from the IDEWE occupational medicine registry was followed-up for twenty-seven years, from 1993 to 2019. The use of drugs for neuropsychological diseases was considered as an objective indicator of mental health. The covariates were related to demographic, physical, behavioural characteristics, occupational and work-related risks. Propensity scores were calculated with a Cox regression model with time-varying covariates. The PS matching was used to eliminate the systematic differences in sub…
A new method to investigate brain stem structural-functional correlations using digital post-processing MRI - reliability in ischemic internuclear op…
2001
We investigated the reliability of a new digital post-processing magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique in ischemic brain stem lesions to identify relations of the lesion to anatomical brain stem structures. The target was a medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) lesion, which was evident from ipsilateral internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO). Sixteen patients with acute unilateral INO and an isolated acute brain stem lesion in T2- and EPI-diffusion weighted MRI within 2 days after the onset of symptoms were studied. The MRI slice direction was parallel and perpendicular to a slice selection of a stereotactic anatomical atlas. The individual slices were normalized and projected in the digita…
Quality of life, depression and fatigue in mildly disabled patients with relapsing–remitting multiple sclerosis receiving subcutaneous interferon bet…
2011
Background: The precise relationships among quality of life, depression, fatigue and cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis (MS) are complex and poorly understood. Objective: To assess the effects of subcutaneous interferon beta-1a on quality of life, depression and fatigue over 3 years in the COGIMUS study, and to examine the relationship between these outcomes and baseline cognitive status. Methods: COGIMUS was an observational 3-year trial assessing cognitive function in 459 patients with relapsing–remitting MS treated with subcutaneous interferon beta-1a. Results: In total, 331 patients completed the study (168 received interferon beta-1a, 44 µg subcutaneously three times weekly, a…
Disruption of White Matter Integrity in Bipolar Depression as a Possible Structural Marker of Illness
2011
Background: Diffusion tensor imaging allows the study of integrity of white matter (WM) tracts. Literature suggests that WM integrity could be altered in bipolar disorder. Heterogeneity of brain imaging methods, the studied samples, and drug treatments make localization, nature, and severity of the WM abnormalities unclear. Methods: We applied tract-based spatial statistics of diffusion tensor imaging measures to compare fractional anisotropy (FA), mean, and radial diffusivity of the WM skeleton in a group of 40 consecutively admitted inpatients affected by a major depressive episode without psychotic features with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder type I and 21 unrelated healthy volunteers f…
Normal reference values of multilayer longitudinal strain according to age decades in a healthy population: A single-centre experience.
2017
Aims Recent advancements in echocardiographic technology allow to analyse myocardial strain in multiple layers. Little is known about the impact of age on layer-specific longitudinal strain in healthy subjects. The aim of this study was to analyse the influence of age on multilayer longitudinal strain and establish normal reference values of layer-specific strain according to age decades in a healthy population referring to our echo laboratory using 2D speckle-tracking echocardiography with layer-specific software. Methods and results Two-hundred sixty-six healthy, consecutive subjects (mean age = 39.2 ± 17.5 years, women/men = 137/129), free of cardiovascular risk factors, were enrolled. S…
The relationship between the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and incident depressive symptoms: A longitudinal cohort study
2018
Abstract Background Diet is a common source of inflammation, and inflammation is associated with depression. We examined the association between the dietary inflammatory index (DII®), a validated measure of inflammatory potential of the diet, and risk of depression in a cohort of older North American adults. Methods This longitudinal study, with a follow-up of 8 years, included 3648 participants (1577 males, 2071 females; mean age: 60.6 years) with/at risk of knee osteoarthritis. DII® scores were calculated using the validated Block Brief 2000 Food-Frequency Questionnaire. Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression-20 scale was used to define depressive symptoms. The relationship between…
Cervical Spondylotic Myelopathy: When and Why the Cervical Corpectomy?
2020
Background: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a degenerative disease that represents the most common spinal cord disorder in adults. The best treatment option has remained controversial. We performed a prospective study to evaluate the clinical, radiographic, and neurophysiologic outcomes for anterior cervical corpectomy in the treatment of CSM. Methods: From January 2011 to January 2017, 60 patients with CSM were prospectively enrolled in the present study. The patients were divided according to the modified Japanese Orthopaedic Association scale (mJOA) score into 2 groups: group A, patients with mild to moderate CSM (mJOA score ≥13); and group B, patients with severe myelopathy (mJ…
Can Fear of COVID-19 Be Predicted by Religiosity and Trust in Institutions among Young Adults? A Prospective Cross-National Study.
2022
The aim of this study was to reveal whether religiosity and trust in institutions are longitudinal predictors of change in fear of COVID-19 (FCV-19) across Poland, Germany, Slovenia, and Israel among young adults over a three-month period. The representative sample consisted of 1723 participants between the ages of 20 and 40 years (M = 30.74, SD = 5.74) across Poland (n = 446), Germany (n = 418), Slovenia (n = 431), and Israel (n = 428). The first measurement was carried out in February 2020 and the second was conducted in May/June 2020. A repeated-measures, two-way, mixed-factor ANOVA was performed to examine changes over time (T) and across countries (C) as well as the interaction of time…
Long-term outcome prediction by clinicopathological risk classification algorithms in node-negative breast cancer--comparison between Adjuvant!, St G…
2009
Background: Defining risk categories in breast cancer is of considerable clinical significance. We have developed a novel risk classification algorithm and compared its prognostic utility to the Web-based tool Adjuvant! and to the St Gallen risk classification. Patients and methods: After a median follow-up of 10 years, we retrospectively analyzed 410 consecutive node-negative breast cancer patients who had not received adjuvant systemic therapy. High risk was defined by any of the following criteria: (i) age 2 cm. All patients were also characterized using Adjuvant! and the St Gallen 2007 risk categories. We analyzed disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Results: The Node-…
