On the influence of the initial ramp for a correct definition of the parameters of fractional viscoelastic materials

2014

Creep and/or Relaxation tests on viscoelastic materials show a power-law trend. Based upon Boltzmann superposition principle the constitutive law with a power-law kernel is ruled by the Caputo's fractional derivative. Fractional constitutive law posses a long memory and then the parameters obtained by best fitting procedures on experimental data are strongly influenced by the prestress on the specimen. As in fact during the relaxation test the imposed history of deformation is not instantaneously applied, since a unit step function may not be realized by the test machine. Usually an initial ramp is present in the deformation history and the time at which the deformation attains the maximum …

INDUCED MODIFICATION OF FLEXURAL TOUGHNESS OF BIO-LIME BASED MORTARS BY ADDITION OF GIANT REED FIBERS

2019

Fibers are often used as reinforcement of brittle materials, like mortars, in order to modify their mechanical behavior; particularly the modification in post-cracking toughness, induced by low elasticity modulus fibers in the artificial stone material, is the main goal in natural fibers mortar manufacturing. In this work Arundo donax L. fibers are used to reinforce lime mortars according to the characteristics of this plant, very commonly available and with high mechanical properties, similar to bamboo, traditionally used in buildings in Spain. Influence of fibers’ length and weight ratio is studied. Particularly, three different fibers’ lengths, 4, 8 and 12 centimeters, and three weight r…

Performance of Thin-Film Lithium Energy Cells under Uniaxial Pressure

2008

The objective of this study was two-fold. The first objective was to determine if the all-solid-state thin-film lithium energy cells could withstand the minimal 550 kPa uniaxial pressure required for composite manufacturing, which both specimens successfully did. The second objective was to determine the upper boundary uniaxial pressure limit of operation for the all-solid-state thin-film lithium energy cells. The two all-solid- state thin-film lithium energy cells tested in the present study under uniaxial pressure performed well even when subjected to uniaxial pressures up to about 2.0 MPa. However, pressures higher than this value led to their degradation. The observed degradation was du…

Effect of various moisture content on the mechanical and viscoelastic properties of giant reed Arundo donax L.

2015

The giant reed Arundo donax L. is an aggressive grass widely diffused throughout warm temperate regions. Thanks to its remarkable features as fast-growing, eco friendly and high specific properties (i.e. high strength/weight and modulus/weight ratios), it is widely used in ancient and traditional buildings, especially in the realization of supports for roof cladding and paneling of walls. A better understanding and a consequent standardization of its properties could make it more suitable for general application in the sustainable building industry. Mechanical and viscoelastic properties of the giant reed were studied as a function of the moisture content. To this scope, various sets of ree…

Reactive blending of a functionalized polyethylene with a semiflexible liquid crystalline copolyester

1996

Reactive blends (50/50 w/w) of a low molar mass polyethylene containing free carboxylic groups (PEox) and a semiflexible liquid crystalline polyester (SBH 1 : 1 : 2, by Eniricerche) have been prepared at 240 degrees C in a Brabender mixer, in the presence of Ti(OBu)(4) catalyst, for different mixing times (15, 60, and 120 min). In order to prove the formation of a PE-g-SBH copolymer, the blends have been fractionated by successive extractions with boiling toluene and xylene. The soluble fractions and the residues have been analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG and DTG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM)…

Reactive compatibilization of PA6/LDPE blends with an ethylene–acrylic acid copolymer and a low molar mass bis-oxazoline

2003

Abstract A sample of polyamide-6 (PA) was blended with low density polyethylene (LDPE) in the 80/20 wt/wt ratio, either without and with 2 phr of an ethylene–acrylic acid copolymer (EAA), Which was known to behave as a compatibilizer precursor, and the effect of the addition of small amounts (0.2 or 0.35 phr) of a fourth component, 2,2′-(1,3-phenylene)-bis(2-oxazoline) (PBO), was investigated. The reactions of PBO with EAA, PA and their blends were studied by recording as a function of time the torque applied to the blending apparatuses and by studying the solubility behavior of the products in formic acid. The PALDPE blends were prepared in a co-rotating twin screw extruder and were charac…

A rapid and eco-friendly route to synthesize graphene-doped silica nanohybrids

2016

International audience; In the present study, the possibility to synthesize graphene oxide (GO)-based nanohybrids with pure and O2-doped silica nanoparticles by a rapid and easy hydrothermal process has been explored. The nanohybrids were prepared by varying the type of silica nanoparticles (average diameter 7 nm or 40 nm) and the silica/GO weight ratio. All the materials were fully characterized by spectroscopic and morphological techniques. The experimental results revealed that it is possible to tune the characteristics of the obtained nanohybrids, such as morphology and amount of ester/ether linkages upon varying the preparation parameters, together with the nanosilica's typology and the…
