Italian Association of Sleep Medicine (AIMS) position statement and guideline on the treatment of menopausal sleep disorders
2019
Insomnia, vasomotor symptoms (VMS) and depression often co-occur after the menopause, with consequent health problems and reductions in quality of life. The aim of this position statement is to provide evidence-based advice on the management of postmenopausal sleep disorders derived from a systematic review of the literature. The latter yielded results on VMS, insomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and restless leg syndrome (RLS). Overall, the studies show that menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) improves VMS, insomnia, and mood. Several antidepressants can improve insomnia, either on their own or in association with MHT; these include selective serotonin reuptake …
Spider cues stimulate feeding, weight gain and survival of crickets
2014
1. To avoid predation, prey often change their behaviour upon encountering cues of predator presence. Such behavioural changes should enhance individual survival, but are likely to be energy-demanding. This should deplete energy reserves of the prey, unless it increases food intake. 2. These hypotheses were studied by conducting two microcosm experiments. In the first, crickets were kept on plants previously occupied by a spider or on control plants. After 3 days leaf consumption and weight gain of the crickets were quantified. In the second experiment, crickets were kept in the presence or absence of spider cues for 3 days. Spiders were then added and predation of the crickets was recorded…
Lone Star Stack: Architecture of a Disk-Based Archival System
2014
The need for huge storage systems rises with the ever growing creation of data. With growing capacities and shrinking prices, "write once read sometimes" workloads become more common. New data is constantly added, rarely updated or deleted, and every stored byte might be read at any time - a common pattern for digital archives or big data scenarios. We present the Lone Star Stack, a disk based archival storage system building block that is optimized for high reliability and energy efficiency. It provides a POSIX file system interface that uses flash based storage for write-offloading and metadata and the disk-based Lone Star RAID for user data storage. The RAID attempts to spin down disks a…
LoneStar RAID
2016
The need for huge storage archives rises with the ever growing creation of data. With today’s big data and data analytics applications, some of these huge archives become active in the sense that all stored data can be accessed at any time. Running and evolving these archives is a constant tradeoff between performance, capacity, and price. We present the LoneStar RAID, a disk-based storage architecture, which focuses on high reliability, low energy consumption, and cheap reads. It is designed for MAID systems with up to hundreds of disk drives per server and is optimized for “write once, read sometimes” workloads. We use dedicated data and parity disks, and export the data disks as individu…
N-Heterocyclic choline analogues based on 1,2,3,4-tetrahydro(iso)quinoline scaffold with anticancer and anti-infective dual action
2016
Pharmacological effects of biologically active “small molecules” can be improved by their targeted modification, which affects drug delivery and interaction with tumor cells and microorganisms. We aimed to evaluate anticancer and antimicrobial activity of lipid-like choline derivatives modified via simultaneous introduction of tetrahydro(iso)quinoline based pharmacophore system at nitrogen atom and long chain alkyl substituent at oxygen atom. Target compounds were synthesized under phase-transfer catalysis conditions followed by quaternization, and evaluated for cytotoxicity and NO-generation ability on HT-1080 and MG-22A tumor cell lines and NIH 3T3 normal mouse fibroblasts, and screened f…
This article examines some peculiar features of magic (γοητεία), supernatural (τέρας), marvellous (θαυμαστός) and paradoxical (παράδοξος) in Themistius’ Orations 4, 7, 11, 16 and 29. Here the allusive depiction of prodi…
Analytical design of nonlinear optical loop mirrors for fiber-optic communication systems
2006
International audience; We propose an easy and efficient method for analytically designing nonlinear optical loop mirrors (NOLMs) for fiber-optic communication systems. This analytical design is based on a Taylor series expansion of the transfer function of the NOLM, from which highly stable dynamical regimes can be readily obtained for any desired pulse parameters. We present numerical simulations showing dramatically improved performances in a 160 Gb/s transmission system that incorporates the NOLMs designed analytically.
Influence of spectral composition on the temperature coefficients of solar cells from Elkem Solar
2014
The temperature coefficients of solar cells from two different feedstocks — a compensated silicon, the Elkem Solar Silicon (ESS®), and polysilicon - under full and selective parts of the light spectrum are presented based on results obtained using a AAA sun simulator. These results are of particular interest in understanding the possible causes behind the better temperature coefficients usually observed for ESS® compared to polysilicon solar cells when measured with a full AM1.5 spectrum. The optical filtered lights from four different regions of the spectrum have been used to examine the influence of temperature coefficients on the spectral composition. ESS® solar cells showed considerable…
An epistatic mini-circuitry between the transcription factors Snail and HNF4α controls liver stem cell and hepatocyte features exhorting opposite reg…
2011
Preservation of the epithelial state involves the stable repression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition program, whereas maintenance of the stem compartment requires the inhibition of differentiation processes. A simple and direct molecular mini-circuitry between master elements of these biological processes might provide the best device to keep balanced such complex phenomena. In this work, we show that in hepatic stem cell Snail, a transcriptional repressor of the hepatocyte differentiation master gene HNF4α, directly represses the expression of the epithelial microRNAs (miRs)-200c and-34a, which in turn target several stem cell genes. Notably, in differentiated hepatocytes HNF4α, p…
