cis-Regulatory sequences driving the expression of the Hbox12 homeobox-containing gene in the presumptive aboral ectoderm territory of the Paracentro…

2008

AbstractEmbryonic development is coordinated by networks of evolutionary conserved regulatory genes encoding transcription factors and components of cell signalling pathways. In the sea urchin embryo, a number of genes encoding transcription factors display territorial restricted expression. Among these, the zygotic Hbox12 homeobox gene is transiently transcribed in a limited number of cells of the animal-lateral half of the early Paracentrotus lividus embryo, whose descendants will constitute part of the ectoderm territory. To obtain insights on the regulation of Hbox12 expression, we have explored the cis-regulatory apparatus of the gene. In this paper, we show that the intergenic region …

Topological structure analysis of chromatin interaction networks.

2019

Abstract Background Current Hi-C technologies for chromosome conformation capture allow to understand a broad spectrum of functional interactions between genome elements. Although significant progress has been made into analysis of Hi-C data to identify biologically significant features, many questions still remain open, in particular regarding potential biological significance of various topological features that are characteristic for chromatin interaction networks. Results It has been previously observed that promoter capture Hi-C (PCHi-C) interaction networks tend to separate easily into well-defined connected components that can be related to certain biological functionality, however, …

ROS/Gazebo Based Simulation of Co-operative UAVs

2019

UAVs can be assigned different tasks such as e.g., rendez-vous and space coverage, which require processing and communication capabilities. This work extends the architecture ROS/Gazebo with the possibility of simulation of co-operative UAVs. We assume UAV with the underlying attitude controller based on the open-source Ardupilot software. The integration of the co-ordination algorithm in Gazebo is implemented with software modules extending Ardupilot with the capability of sending/receiving messages to/from drones, and executing the co-ordination protocol. As far as it concerns the simulation environment, we have extended the world in Gazebo to hold more than one drone and to open a specif…

Integrable systems, Frobenius manifolds and cohomological field theories

2022

In this dissertation, we study the underlying geometry of integrable systems, in particular tausymmetric bi-Hamiltonian hierarchies of evolutionary PDEs and differential-difference equations.First, we explore the close connection between the realms of integrable systems and algebraic geometry by giving a new proof of the Witten conjecture, which constructs the string taufunction of the Korteweg-de Vries hierarchy via intersection theory of the moduli spaces of stable curves with marked points. This novel proof is based on the geometry of double ramification cycles, tautological classes whose behavior under pullbacks of the forgetful and gluing maps facilitate the computation of intersection…

Hypervisor-based Protection of Code

2019

The code of a compiled program is susceptible to reverse-engineering attacks on the algorithms and the business logic that are contained within the code. The main existing countermeasure to reverse-engineering is obfuscation. Generally, obfuscation methods suffer from two main deficiencies: 1) the obfuscated code is less efficient than the original and 2) with sufficient effort, the original code may be reconstructed. We propose a method that is based on cryptography and virtualization. The most valuable functions are encrypted and remain inaccessible even during their execution, thus preventing their reconstruction. A specially crafted hypervisor is responsible for decryption, execution, a…

Unmanned Aerial Vehicle-Based Non Destructive Diagnostics

2018

The paper proposes a cloud platform for analyzing the radiometric infrared videos uploaded by drones which patrol large photovoltaic plants. Thanks to artificial vision algorithms, it does not require any human support to select and associate the framed PV modules to the corresponding ones in the topology of the photovoltaic plant. The algorithm implements an innovative diagnostic protocol, which evaluates the thermal state of the photovoltaic module, whichever the environmental conditions are. The data automatically computed and collected in a multimedia database provide the O&M technicians with significant information to monitor the ageing of each module of the photovoltaic plant. The pro…

Updated design and integration of the ancillary circuits for the European Test Blanket Systems

2019

The validation of the key technologies relevant for a DEMO Breeding Blanket is one of the main objectives of the design and operation of the Test Blanket Systems (TBS) in ITER. In compliance with the main features and technical requirements of the parent breeding blanket concepts, the European TBM Project is developing the HCLL (Helium Cooled Lithium Lead) and HCPB (Helium Cooled Pebble Bed)-TBS, focusing in this phase on the design life cycle and on R&D activities in support of the design. The TBS ancillary systems are mainly circuits devoted to the removal of thermal power and to the extraction and recovery of the tritium generated in the Test Blanket Modules. They are: • The Helium C…

MATLAB Co-Simulation Tools for Power Supply Systems Design

2011

ion level. Circuit simulation software as Powersim PSIM and Orcad Pspice are the most common choice for circuit modelling. In (Basso, 2008), the design and simulation of switchmode power supplies is deeply analyzed and simulation tips in several environments are proposed. ASIC simulation and verification tools as Xilinx ISE/Modelsim or Aldec ActiveHDL are available to implement the digital controller by the VHDL or VERILOG source code. Since the interaction between subsystems is the most common source of faults, testing separately analog and digital subsystems by the means of different verification tools is a severe mistake. Matlab is a powerful simulation environment for mixed-mode systems…

On the nuclear response of the helium-cooled lithium lead test blanket module in ITER

2005

Abstract The helium-cooled lithium lead (HCLL) concept has been recently selected as one of the two European reference designs foreseen for the breeding blanket of a demonstration fusion reactor. In particular, within the framework of the research and development activities on this blanket line, an HCLL test blanket module (TBM) has to be designed and manufactured to be implemented in ITER. At the Department of Nuclear Engineering (DIN) of the University of Palermo, a research campaign has been carried out to investigate the nuclear response of HCLL-TBM inside ITER by a numerical approach based on the Monte Carlo method. A realistic 3D heterogeneous model of HCLL-TBM has been set-up and ins…

Study of the helium-cooled lithium lead test blanket module nuclear behaviour under irradiation in ITER

2009

Abstract The present paper deals with the detailed investigation of the helium-cooled lithium lead test blanket module (HCLL-TBM) nuclear behaviour under irradiation in ITER, carried out at the Department of Nuclear Engineering of the University of Palermo adopting a numerical approach based on the Monte Carlo method. A realistic 3D heterogeneous model of the HCLL-TBM was set-up and inserted into an ITER 3D semi-heterogeneous model that realistically simulates the reactor lay-out up to the cryostat. A Gaussian-shaped neutron source was adopted for the calculations. The main features of the HCLL-TBM nuclear response were assessed, paying a particular attention to the neutronic and photonic d…
