Maternal-fetal Complications in Pregnancy: A Retrospective Comparison Between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
2021
Abstract Background The aim of the study was a retrospective comparison of the differences in maternal-foetal outcomes between women with type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T1DM and T2DM). Methods A cohort of 135 patients with pregestational diabetes, 73 with T1DM (mean age 29 ± 5 years) and 62 with T2DM (mean age 33 ± 6 years), in intensive insulin treatment throughout pregnancy were evaluated. Clinical and metabolic parameters and the prevalence of maternal and foetal complications were assessed. Results Women with T1DM showed lower pregestational BMI (p < 0.001), pregestational weight (p < 0.001), weight at delivery (p < 0.001), ∆_total_insulin requirement (IR) at the first, s…
Myelosuppressive effects of cytosine arabinoside (Ara‐C) on growth factor‐dependent human long‐term bone marrow cultures (LTBMC)
1992
Freshly isolated human mononuclear cells (5 × 106) were incubated in a Dexter-type long-term bone marrow culture (LTBMC) system to study myelosuppressive effects of cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) in combination with granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) or interleukin 3 (IL-3). Differential counts (dc) of the nonadherent cell (nac) populations, starting with culture initiation, were performed weekly. After one week of simultaneous incubation of LTBMCs with either cytokine (100 ng/ml) and Ara-C (1 mg/ml), nac numbers were markedly reduced compared to controls. Dc after week 1 of culture demonstrated significant decreases of all myeloid cell fractions except for macrophages,…
Growth factor concentrations and their placental mRNA expression are modulated in gestational diabetes mellitus: possible interactions with macrosomia
2009
Abstract Background Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. GDM is a well known risk factor for foetal overgrowth, termed macrosomia which is influenced by maternal hypergycemia and endocrine status through placental circulation. The study was undertaken to investigate the implication of growth factors and their receptors in GDM and macrosomia, and to discuss the role of the materno-foeto-placental axis in the in-utero regulation of foetal growth. Methods 30 women with GDM and their 30 macrosomic babies (4.75 ± 0.15 kg), and 30 healthy age-matched pregnant women and their 30 newborns (3.50 ± 0.10 kg) were recruited in the present study. Serum …
Intracranial venous sinus thrombosis as unusual presentation of Bing-Neel syndrome: case illustration.
2017
A 42-year-old woman presented with progressive blurred vision, vertigo, and headache. MRI showed bilateral intraocular protrusion of the optic nerve head and right transverse sinus thrombosis . Low-molecular-weight heparin was administered without symptom relief. Additional MRI showed left frontoparietal arachnoid space obliteration by pathological tissue, and infiltration of the sagittal and right transverse sinuses. After Gd administration, we observed diffuse enhancement of the dura in the left cerebral hemisphere and subdural and epicranial soft-tissue infiltration . A biopsy of the extra-axial tissue was performed. Histological examination showed a neoplasm composed of large cells with…
Increased level of H-ferritin and its imbalance with L-ferritin, in bone marrow and liver of patients with adult onset Still's disease, developing ma…
2015
In this paper, we aimed to evaluate the levels of ferritin enriched in H subunits (H-ferritin) and ferritin enriched in L subunits (L-ferritin) and the cells expressing these 2 molecules, in the bone marrow (BM) and liver biopsies obtained from adult onset Still's disease (AOSD) patients who developed macrophage activation syndrome (MAS), and correlating these data with the severity of the disease. Twenty-one patients with MAS-associated AOSD underwent BM biopsy and among them, 9 patients with hepatomegaly and elevated liver enzymes underwent liver biopsy. All the samples were stained by both immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence. A statistical analysis was performed to estimate the p…
Preliminary data on the occurrence of alien macroalgae in the vermetid reef along the coasts of Favignana Island (Southern Tyrrhenian Sea)
2017
Intertidal vermetid reefs are highly diverse systems that provide numerous habitats for animal and vegetal species, leading to an increase of intertidal biodiversity. These habitats, particularly vulnerable to environmental changes and human activities, are now experiencing high mortality in several areas of the Mediterranean Sea. Since alien macroalgae are nowadays considered one of the most serious threats to biodiversity and natural ecosystem functioning, we provide a first baseline assessment of the occurrence of alien species in the vermetid reef along the coasts of the Island of Favignana (Egadi Islands Marine Protected Area). Surveyes carried out in 2015 revealed the only presence of…
A highly enantioselective abiotic receptor for malate dianion in aqueous solution
2006
The highly enantioselective molecular recognition of the malate dianion by a synthetic receptor in aqueous solution has been studied by potentiometric titrations, mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), diffusion measurements (PGSE NMR) and molecular modeling. Domain decomposition in the symmetric boundary element analysis
2002
Recent developments in the symmetric boundary element method (SBEM) have shown a clear superiority of this formulation over the collocation method. Its competitiveness has been tested in comparison to the finite element method (FEM) and is manifested in several engineering problems in which internal boundaries are present, i.e. those in which the body shows a jump in the physical characteristics of the material and in which an appropriate study of the response must be used. When we work in the ambit of the SBE formulation, the body is subdivided into macroelements characterized by some relations which link the interface boundary unknowns to the external actions. These relations, valid for e…
El Aprendizaje por Competencias y su Evaluación: Una Aplicación para la Asignatura “Macroeconomía”
2010
Partitioning of macrocyclic compounds in a cationic and an anionic micellar solution: a small-angle neutron scattering study.
2004
Following a previous investigation on partitioning of some macrocycle compounds in sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTAB) aqueous solutions and their effect on the micellar structure, a small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) study has been performed at fixed surfactant content (0.20 mol/L) and varying macrocycle concentrations from 0.20 up to 1.0 mol/L. Conductivity measurements have been also performed in order to evaluate the effect of the presence of macrocycles on the critical micellar concentration (cmc) of the two surfactants. SANS experimental data were fitted successfully by means of a core-plus-shell monodisperse prolate ellipsoid model. It has been…
