Whole-body MRI, FDG-PET/CT, and bone marrow biopsy, for the assessment of bone marrow involvement in patients with newly diagnosed lymphoma.
2016
To compare whole-body MRI (WB-MRI) with diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI), FDG-PET/CT, and bone marrow biopsy (BMB), for the evaluation of bone marrow involvement (BMI) in patients with newly diagnosed lymphoma. This retrospective study was approved by our Institutional Review Board. Two independent radiologists and one nuclear medicine specialist reviewed all WB-MRI and FDG-PET/CT scans prospectively performed on 104 patients with newly diagnosed lymphoma (53 males; 47 Hodgkin; mean age: 44 years; range, 15-86 years) between 2013 and 2015. The delay between imaging scans and BMBs was up to 10 days. The diagnostic accuracy of WB-MRI (1.5 Tesla MR scanner, with T1w, T2w-STIR, and DWI sequences…
Aberrant Subnetwork and Hub Dysconnectivity in Adult Bipolar Disorder: A Multicenter Graph Theory Analysis
2021
Abstract Neuroimaging evidence implicates structural network-level abnormalities in bipolar disorder (BD); however, there remain conflicting results in the current literature hampered by sample size limitations and clinical heterogeneity. Here, we set out to perform a multisite graph theory analysis to assess the extent of neuroanatomical dysconnectivity in a large representative study of individuals with BD. This cross-sectional multicenter international study assessed structural and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging data obtained from 109 subjects with BD type 1 and 103 psychiatrically healthy volunteers. Whole-brain metrics, permutation-based statistics, and connectivity of h…
Transient and sustained BOLD signal time courses affect the detection of emotion-related brain activation in fMRI.
2014
A tremendous amount of effort has been dedicated to unravel the functional neuroanatomy of the processing and regulation of emotion, resulting in a well-described picture of limbic, para-limbic and prefrontal regions involved. Studies applying functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) often use the block-wise presentation of stimuli with affective content, and conventionally model brain activation as a function of stimulus or task duration. However, there is increasing evidence that regional brain responses may not always translate to task duration and rather show stimulus onset-related transient time courses. We assume that brain regions showing transient responses cannot be detected in…
Association of Left Ventricular Systolic Dysfunction Among Carriers of Truncating Variants in Filamin C With Frequent Ventricular Arrhythmia and End-…
2021
Importance: Truncating variants in the gene encoding filamin C (FLNCtv) are associated with arrhythmogenic and dilated cardiomyopathies with a reportedly high risk of ventricular arrhythmia. Objective: To determine the frequency of and risk factors associated with adverse events among FLNCtv carriers compared with individuals carrying TTN truncating variants (TTNtv).Design, Setting, and Participants: This cohort study recruited 167 consecutive FLNCtv carriers and a control cohort of 244 patients with TTNtv matched for left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) from 19 European cardiomyopathy referral units between 1990 and 2018. Data analyses were conducted between June and October, 2020.Main…
Magnetic resonance chondro-crassometry (MR CCM): a method for accurate determination of articular cartilage thickness?
1996
A method for the assessment of articular cartilage thickness based on MRI is presented and its accuracy and reproducibility tested. Six specimens of human patellae were imaged, using a fat-suppressed FLASH 3D sequence, and sectioned with a high-precision band saw. The regional distribution of articular cartilage thickness was determined from the MR images and from the anatomical sections (intervals of 0.5 mm). With image analysis 50-90% of the image points were found to lie within exactly the same thickness interval in corresponding patterns, and less than 17% deviated more than 0.5 mm. More than 85% of all pixels were reproducible with MRI after new positioning of the joint. No influence o…
Repeatability of patellar cartilage thickness patterns in the living, using a fat-suppressed magnetic resonance imaging sequence with short acquisiti…
1998
A fast, reproducible, and noninvasive method is required for quantifying cartilage thickness clinically and for studying the deformation of articular cartilage during and after mechanical loading in vivo. The objective of the current investigation was to test the repeatability of regional distribution patterns of patellar cartilage thickness in the living on the basis of a fat-suppressed magnetic resonance imaging sequence with a short acquisition time and three-dimensional digital data processing. The knees of eight healthy volunteers were transversally imaged with a fat-suppressed FLASH-3D (fast low angle shot) sequence (acquisition time: 4 minutes and 10 seconds). In each case, the joint…
Reduced interhemispheric structural connectivity between anterior cingulate cortices in borderline personality disorder
2008
Functional and structural alterations of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), a key region for emotional and cognitive processing, are associated with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, the interhemispheric structural connectivity between the left and right ACC and between other prefrontal regions in this condition is unknown. We acquired diffusion-tensor imaging data from 20 healthy women and 19 women with BPD and comorbid attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Interhemispheric structural connectivity between both sides of the ACC, dorsolateral prefrontal cortices and medial orbitofrontal cortices was assessed by a novel probabilistic diffusion tensor-based fiber tra…
Seeking the “Beauty Center” in the Brain: A Meta-Analysis of fMRI Studies of Beautiful Human Faces and Visual Art
2020
AbstractThe existence of a common beauty is a long-standing debate in philosophy and related disciplines. In the last two decades, cognitive neuroscientists have sought to elucidate this issue by exploring the common neural basis of the experience of beauty. Still, empirical evidence for such common neural basis of different forms of beauty is not conclusive. To address this question, we performed an activation likelihood estimation (ALE) meta-analysis on the existing neuroimaging studies of beauty appreciation of faces and visual art by non-expert adults (49 studies, 982 participants, meta-data are available at https://osf.io/s9xds/). We observed that perceiving these two forms of beauty a…
Extraction of prefronto-amygdalar pathways by combining probability maps
2008
Many recent studies reported altered functional connectivity within the frontolimbic circuitry in a wide range of neuropsychiatric disorders. However, functional connectivity must rely on structural connections. In this study we applied a novel probabilistic fiber tracking method to assess the structural connectivity between the amygdala and different prefrontal brain regions in vivo. Twenty healthy subjects were investigated with diffusion tensor imaging. Probabilistic fiber tracking was started from the amygdala and different prefrontal brain regions. Resulting probability maps were combined using an extended multiplication of probabilistic maps to identify the most probable anatomical pa…
Enhancement pattern of hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) on MR imaging performed with Gd-EOB-DTPA versus other Gd-based contrast agents (GBCAs): An intrai…
2019
Purpose: To conduct an intraindividual comparison of the enhancement pattern of hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) on dynamic MRI study obtained following the injection of Gadoxetic acid (Gd-EOB-DTPA) and other gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs).Method: This is a retrospective, Institutional Review Board-approved study conducted in a single institution. A search of medical records between 2008 and 2017 revealed 17 patients (all females) with at least one pathologically-proven HCA who underwent liver MRI with Gd-EOB-DTPA and another GBCA within 1 year. Enhancement of each lesion on hepatic arterial (HAP), portal venous (PVP), 2 min and 4-5 minutes phases was subjectively evaluated by two abd…
