Digital Transformation in Maintenance Management
2022
The relationship between technology and maintenance is mutually beneficial since technology is continuously improving with consequent substantial advancements in the field of maintenance. Maintenance management may be effectively modernized through digitalization. Developing advanced technologies promotes indeed the possibility of maintaining a competitive and long-term position in this field. Digitalization is consistently transforming organizations by allowing them to use suitable technologies for collecting data automatically. Various equipment and components are nowadays capable of collecting their operating data over an extended period, which may yield a plethora of intriguing insights…
Santa Rosalia, the icon of biodiversity
2010
This article summarizes the results presented in a series of invited contributions which were submitted to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of publication of the seminal article ‘‘Homage to Santa Rosalia or why are there so many kinds of animals’’ by G.E. Hutchinson. The authors were asked to explore old and new paradigms of biodiversity in aquatic ecosystems. The contributions by Hutchinson in this field are truly landmarks in the history of modern ecological sciences. The authors of the contributed articles, stimulated by one of the most fruitful concept articles in ecology that has appeared over the last half century, have shown that scientific investigation, although still seeking the…
Determination of Pareto frontier in multi-objective maintenance optimization
2011
Abstract The objective of a maintenance policy generally is the global maintenance cost minimization that involves not only the direct costs for both the maintenance actions and the spare parts, but also those ones due to the system stop for preventive maintenance and the downtime for failure. For some operating systems, the failure event can be dangerous so that they are asked to operate assuring a very high reliability level between two consecutive fixed stops. The present paper attempts to individuate the set of elements on which performing maintenance actions so that the system can assure the required reliability level until the next fixed stop for maintenance, minimizing both the globa…
Proactive maintenance of offshore wind turbine blades using knowledge-based force analysis
2013
The operation and maintenance (O&M) costs of wind turbines constitute approximately 10-15% of the lifecycle cost in onshore installations and up to 30% in offshore installations. The O&M costs for offshore wind power plants are higher than the onshore ones due to greater logistical challenges of maintaining and servicing, and the less mature state of offshore wind energy technology. Wind turbine blades suffer from various faults, for example, blade angle asymmetry, icing, and bends. These faults may cause wind turbines to a standstill. Replacement of rotor blades will normally result in a long downtime since the replacement process involves heavy transportation (vessel, crane) and dependenc…
Cost analysis of the facilities deterioration in wastewater treatment plants: A dynamic approach
2019
Abstract The implementation of the Directive 91/271 / CEE resulted in the proliferation of new Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) all around Europe. These facilities, which are compound by a wide range of assets (civil works, electromechanical equipment, pipelines, etc.), are ageing and deteriorating having an impact on the efficiency of the process. It is founded that repairs and corrective maintenance costs have increased in the last years, due to the deterioration process. Therefore, the aim of the present study is to focus on the cost effects of the deterioration process of the facilities in different wastewater treatment technologies. The analysis of these impacts will allow the opera…
Associations Between Online Learning, Smartphone Addiction Problems, and Psychological Symptoms in Chinese College Students After the COVID-19 Pandem…
2022
BackgroundSmartphone-based online education gained popularity during and after the COVID-19 pandemic. Although recent studies have highlighted the association between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and mental health symptoms, the potential role of online learning in this relationship remains unclear. This study aimed to analyze the relationships between higher education modes, PSU, and related psychological symptoms in university students.MethodsA total of 1,629 Chinese university students from five provinces completed a web-based questionnaire survey between March 2020 and October 2021. Demographic characteristics and learning conditions were recorded. All participants completed the Smar…
Managerial decision making for complex service systems Optimization
2021
The present paper deals with managerial decisions for Predictive Maintenance (PrdM) of complex service systems. We propose a Multi-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) approach aimed at sorting those failure modes potentially involving critical components into risk classes for interventions prioritisation and maintenance control. In this context, the sorting technique ELimination Et Choix Traduisant la REalité (ELECTRE) TRI is applied to support in finding the root causes that can be eliminated for failure prevention and/or minimization. This methodology presents the advantage to not rely on comparisons (as well as on their transitivity) between pairs of elements, simplifying computations for co…
Regional policies for sustainability in the Mediterranean countries: the role of a proper HVAC system maintenance in museums
2013
Italy, like several Mediterranean countries, holds a very large number of cultural artifacts that are often exhibited and saved inside museums. Museums are usually part of historical buildings that, not rarely, originally had a different intended use and that have been currently transformed in place for conservation and for exhibition of works of art. The use of historical buildings as museums leads to limitations in the management and distribution of exhibition space, in design and managing HVAC systems and in the achievement of targets relating to the continuous monitoring of the microclimate for people comfort and for preservation of works of art. Moreover, the costs of the operation and…
Diagnosis of intermittent fault dynamics
2008
Diagnosis of intermittent faults is relevant for productive processes with a high level of maintenance caused by such failures. A characterization of diagnosed faults may save unnecessary repairs and enable better maintenance planning. This paper introduces the concept of diagnosis of intermittent fault dynamics. Moreover, a methodology for modelling intermittent faults and generating information for maintenance planning in discrete event systems is thoroughly covered.
A Multi-Objective Approach to Optimize a Periodic Maintenance Policy
2012
The present paper proposes a multi-objective approach to find out an optimal periodic maintenance policy for a repairable and stochastically deteriorating multi-component system over a finite time horizon. The tackled problem concerns the determination of the system elements to replace at each scheduled and periodical system inspection by ensuring the simultaneous minimization of both the expected total maintenance cost and the expected global system unavailability time. It is assumed that in the case of system elements failure they are instantaneously detected and repaired by means of minimal repair actions in order to rapidly restore the system. A nonlinear integer mathematical programmi…
