Smoking differently modifies suicide risk of affective disorders, substance use disorders, and social factors
2008
Abstract Background Although an association between smoking and suicide has repeatedly been shown, information about a modifying influence of smoking on other risk factors for suicide is lacking. Methods Axis I and Axis II disorders, sociodemographic factors, and tobacco use were assessed by a semi-structured interview including the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I (SCID-I) and Personality Disorders (SCID-II) in 163 suicides (mean age 49.6 +/− 19.3 years; 64.4% men;) by psychological autopsy method and by personal interview in 396 living population-based control persons (mean age 51.6 +/− 17.0 years; 55.8% men). Results Smoking status (current smokers, lifetime non-smokers, a…
Exercise for depression in older adults: a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials adjusting for publication bias
2016
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the antidepressant effects of exercise in older adults, using randomized controlled trial (RCT) data. METHODS: We conducted a meta-analysis of exercise in older adults, addressing limitations of previous works. RCTs of exercise interventions in older people with depression (≥ 60 years) comparing exercise vs. control were eligible. A random-effects meta-analysis calculating the standardized mean difference (SMD) (95% confidence interval [95%CI]), meta-regressions, and trim, fill, and fail-safe number analyses were conducted. RESULTS: Eight RCTs were included, representing 138 participants in exercise arms and 129 controls. Exercise had a large and significant effect on…
Fibrous hamartoma of infancy: an Italian multi-institutional experience.
2006
Fibrous hamartoma of infancy: an Italian multi-institutional experience. Carretto E, Dall'Igna P, Alaggio R, Siracusa F, Granata C, Ferrari A, Cecchetto G. Source Division of Paediatric Surgery, Department of Paediatrics, University of Padua, Padua, Italy. Abstract BACKGROUND: Fibrous hamartoma (FH) of infancy is a benign mesenchymal tumor, occurring as a superficial mass. Complete excision is curative. OBJECTIVE AND METHODS: The clinical features and treatment results of 18 children with FH are described. RESULTS: Local excision was the most common procedure. Surgery was radical in 10 patients, with microscopic residual disease in 6; all of them are alive with no evidence of disease 2 to 4…
Predicting new major depression symptoms from long working hours, psychosocial safety climate and work engagement: a population-based cohort study
2021
ObjectivesThis study sought to assess the association between long working hours, psychosocial safety climate (PSC), work engagement (WE) and new major depression symptoms emerging over the next 12 months. PSC is the work climate supporting workplace psychological health.SettingAustralian prospective cohort population data from the states of New South Wales, Western Australia and South Australia.ParticipantsAt Time 1, there were 3921 respondents in the sample. Self-employed, casual temporary, unclassified, those with working hours <35 (37% of 2850) and participants with major depression symptoms at Time 1 (6.7% of 1782) were removed. The final sample was a population-based cohort of 1084…
Diagnostic accuracy of computed tomographic colonography for the detection of advanced neoplasia in individuals at increased risk of colorectal cance…
2009
CONTEXT: Computed tomographic (CT) colonography has been recognized as an alternative for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in average-risk individuals, but less information is available on its performance in individuals at increased risk of CRC. OBJECTIVE: To assess the accuracy of CT colonography in detecting advanced colorectal neoplasia in asymptomatic individuals at increased risk of CRC using unblinded colonoscopy as the reference standard. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This was a multicenter, cross-sectional study. Individuals at increased risk of CRC due to either family history of advanced neoplasia in first-degree relatives, personal history of colorectal adenomas, or positiv…
Mākslīgo ligzdvietu iekšējā apgaismojuma loma melnā mušķērāja Ficedula hypoleuca un lielās zīlītes Parus major ligzdošanas vietas izvēlē
2018
Granulocyte–Colony Stimulating Factor plus Plerixafor in Patients with β-thalassemia Major Results in the Effective Mobilization of Primitive CD34+ C…
2017
Successful gene therapy for β-thalassemia requires optimal numbers of autologous gene-transduced hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) with high repopulating capacity. Previous studies suggested superior mobilization in these patients by the combination of granulocyte–colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) plus plerixafor over single agents. We mobilized four adult patients using G-CSF+plerixafor to assess the intra-individual variation of the circulating CD34+ cells number and subtypes preand post-plerixafor administration. The procedure was well-tolerated and the target cell dose of ≥8×10 6 CD34+ cells/kg was achieved in three of them with one apheresis procedure. The addition of ple…
Real-world evidence from a European cohort study of patients with treatment resistant depression: Treatment patterns and clinical outcomes.
2021
Abstract Background Treatment resistant depression (TRD) characterizes a subgroup of 10–30% of patients with major depressive disorder, and is associated with considerable morbidity and mortality. A consensus treatment for TRD does not exist, which often leads to wide variations in treatment strategies. Real-world studies on treatment patterns and outcomes in TRD patients in Europe are lacking and could help elucidate current treatment strategies and their efficacy. Methods This non-interventional cohort study of patients with TRD (defined as treatment failure on ≥2 oral antidepressants given at adequate dose and duration) with moderate to severe depression collected real-world data on trea…

Characterization of host-pathogen interactions is a fundamental approach in microbiological and immunological oriented disciplines. It is commonly accepted that host cells start to change their phenotype after engulfing pathogens. Techniques such as real time PCR or ELISA were used to characterize the genes encoding proteins that are associated either with pathogen elimination or immune escape mechanisms. Most of such studies were performed in vitro using primary host cells or cell lines. Consequently, the data generated with such approaches reflect the global RNA expression or protein amount recovered from all cells in culture. This is justified when all host cells harbor an equal amount o…
The Relationship Between Polygenic Risk Scores and Cognition in Schizophrenia
2020
Abstract Background Cognitive impairment is a clinically important feature of schizophrenia. Polygenic risk score (PRS) methods have demonstrated genetic overlap between schizophrenia, bipolar disorder (BD), major depressive disorder (MDD), educational attainment (EA), and IQ, but very few studies have examined associations between these PRS and cognitive phenotypes within schizophrenia cases. Methods We combined genetic and cognitive data in 3034 schizophrenia cases from 11 samples using the general intelligence factor g as the primary measure of cognition. We used linear regression to examine the association between cognition and PRS for EA, IQ, schizophrenia, BD, and MDD. The results wer…
