On the arithmetic and geometry of binary Hamiltonian forms

Given an indefinite binary quaternionic Hermitian form $f$ with coefficients in a maximal order of a definite quaternion algebra over $\mathbb Q$, we give a precise asymptotic equivalent to the number of nonequivalent representations, satisfying some congruence properties, of the rational integers with absolute value at most $s$ by $f$, as $s$ tends to $+\infty$. We compute the volumes of hyperbolic 5-manifolds constructed by quaternions using Eisenstein series. In the Appendix, V. Emery computes these volumes using Prasad's general formula. We use hyperbolic geometry in dimension 5 to describe the reduction theory of both definite and indefinite binary quaternionic Hermitian forms.

Este es un estudio de revisión en el que se analizan las investigaciones que evalúan los efectos a lo largo del tiempo del programa de educacióntemprano Abecedarian Project (ABC). El ABC es un programa compensador preventivo de 0-5 años y entresacados de madres de alto riesgo. El grupo experimental (E) recibe tratamiento preescolar intensivo, no el control (C). Non-archimedean hyperbolicity and applications

Inspired by the work of Cherry, we introduce and study a new notion of Brody hyperbolicity for rigid analytic varieties over a non-archimedean field $K$ of characteristic zero. We use this notion of hyperbolicity to show the following algebraic statement: if a projective variety admits a non-constant morphism from an abelian variety, then so does any specialization of it. As an application of this result, we show that the moduli space of abelian varieties is $K$-analytically Brody hyperbolic in equal characteristic zero. These two results are predicted by the Green-Griffiths-Lang conjecture on hyperbolic varieties and its natural analogues for non-archimedean hyperbolicity. Finally, we use …

Application of the General Model "Biological Nutrient Removal Model No.1" to upgrade two full-scale WWTPs

In this paper, two practical case studies for upgrading two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) using the general model BNRM1 (Biological Nutrient Removal Model No. 1) are presented. In the first case study, the Tarragona WWTP was upgraded by reducing the phosphorus load to the anaerobic digester in order to minimize the precipitation problems. Phosphorus load reduction was accomplished by mixing the primary sludge and the secondary sludge and by elutriating the mixed sludge. In the second case study, the Alcantarilla WWTP, the nutrient removal was enhanced by maintaining a relatively low dissolved oxygen concentration in Stage A to maintain the acidogenic bacteria activity. Dynamic stability of plane elastic frames

Abstract The stability of plane elastic frames subjected to a vertical foundation motion of the stationary, ergodic type is investigated. The equations of motion are obtained in modal co-ordinates, with account taken of many modes of vibration. The problem is subsequently reduced to the study of only the first mode of vibration. By considering a particular case, the stability domains are sketched as functions of the variation of the rigidities of the beam-column connecting joints and as functions of the number of stories.

Characters, bilinear forms and solvable groups

Abstract We prove a number of results about the ordinary and Brauer characters of finite solvable groups in characteristic 2, by defining and using the concept of the extended nucleus of a real irreducible character. In particular we show that the Isaacs canonical lift of a real irreducible Brauer character has Frobenius–Schur indicator +1. We also show that the principal indecomposable module corresponding to a real irreducible Brauer character affords a quadratic geometry if and only if each extended nucleus is a split extension of a nucleus.

On a paper of Beltrán and Shao about coprime action

Abstract Assume that A and G are finite groups of coprime orders such that A acts on G via automorphisms. Let p be a prime. The following coprime action version of a well-known theorem of Ito about the structure of a minimal non-p-nilpotent groups is proved: if every maximal A-invariant subgroup of G is p-nilpotent, then G is p-soluble. If, moreover, G is not p-nilpotent, then G must be soluble. Some earlier results about coprime action are consequences of this theorem.

Correspondences of Brauer characters and Sylow subgroup normalizers

Abstract Let p > 3 and q ≠ p be primes, let G be a finite q-solvable group and let P ∈ Syl p ( G ) . Then G has a unique irreducible q-Brauer character of p ′ -degree lying over 1 P if and only if N G ( P ) / P is a q-group. One direction of this result follows from a natural McKay bijection of p ′ -degree irreducible q-Brauer characters, which is obtained under suitable conditions.
