Cardiopulmonary loading in motocross riding
2007
The present study was designed to examine physiological responses during motocross riding. Nine Finnish A-level motocross riders performed a 15-min ride at a motocross track and a test of maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) in the laboratory. Cardiopulmonary strain was measured continuously during the ride as well as in the VO2max test. During the ride, mean VO2 was 32 ml x kg(-1) x min(-1) (s = 4), which was 71% (s = 12) of maximum, while ventilation (V(E)) was 73% (s = 15) of its maximum. The relative VO2 and V(E) values during the riding correlated with successful riding performance (r = 0.80, P < 0.01 and r = 0.79, P < 0.01, respectively). Mean heart rate was maintained at 95% (s = 7) of its…
The cross-sectional area of the gluteus maximus muscle varies according to habitual exercise loading: Implications for activity-related and evolution…
2015
Greater size of the gluteus maximus muscle in humans compared to non-human primates has been considered an indication of its function in bipedal posture and gait, especially running capabilities. Our aim was to find out how the size of the gluteus maximus muscle varies according to sports while controlling for variation in muscle strength and body weight. Data on gluteus maximus muscle cross-sectional area (MCA) were acquired from magnetic resonance images of the hip region of female athletes (N=91), and physically active controls (N=20). Dynamic muscle force was measured as counter movement jump and isometric knee extension force as leg press. Five exercise loading groups were created: hig…
Effects of strength vs. endurance training and their combination on physical performance characteristics in female horseback riders
2020
BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of strength (S), endurance (E) and concurrent strength and endurance (SE) training on neuromuscular and cardiorespiratory characteristics during the 12-week volume-equated protocols in female horseback riders. METHODS: Subjects (N=44) (29.4±8.9 yrs) were assigned to S (n=11), E (n=11), SE (n=13) and control (C) (n=9) groups. Training consisted of progressive S, E or SE training 3x/week and riding exercise 4-6x/week. The measurements included maximal isometric bilateral leg press force (MVCLP) and EMG of VL and BF muscles, rapid isometric force production (0-500ms), maximal force of trunk extensor/flexors (MVCE/MVCF), countermo…
Association between cardiorespiratory fitness and metabolic health in overweight and obese adults
2021
Background Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) has been inversely associated with insulin resistance and clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors among overweight and obese individuals. However, most previous studies have scaled CRF by body mass (BM) possibly inflating the association between CRF and cardiometabolic health. We investigated the associations of peak oxygen uptake (V O2peak) and peak power output (Wpeak) scaled either by BM-1, fat free mass (FFM-1), or by allometric methods with individual cardiometabolic risk factors and clustering of cardiometabolic risk factors in 55 overweight or obese adults with metabolic syndrome. Methods V O2peak and Wpeak were assessed by a maximal cycl…
(Table 1) Age determination of sediment core SO147_106KL
2005
Here we present a high-resolution marine sediment record from the El Niño region off the coast of Peru spanning the last 20,000 years. Sea surface temperature, photosynthetic pigments, and a lithic proxy for El Niño flood events on the continent are used as paleo-El Niño-Southern Oscillation proxy data. The onset of stronger El Niño activity in Peru started around 17,000 calibrated years before the present, which is later than modeling experiments show but contemporaneous with the Heinrich event 1. Maximum El Niño activity occurred during the early and late Holocene, especially during the second and third millennium B.P. The recurrence period of very strong El Niño events is 60-80 years. El…
Flood-stack of combined sediment record ELSA
2016
This study reconstructs the main flood phases in central Europe from event layers in sediment cores from Holocene Eifel maar lakes and Pleistocene dry maar structures. These reconstructions are combined with recent gauge time-series to cover the entire precipitation extremes of the last 60 000 years. In general, Eifel maar sediments are perfectly suited for the preservation of event layers since the deep water in the maar lakes is seasonal anoxic and therefore, bioturbation is low. However, the preservation of annual lamination is only preserved in Holzmaar and Ulmener Maar; the other cores are dated by 14C, magnetostratigraphy, tephra markers and ice core tuning. The cores were drilled in …
Determination of the crystallinity of TiO2 photocatalysts
2018
Abstract This study reports a new simple method to determine the crystallinity of anatase and rutile TiO2 photocatalysts. The crystallinity degree of various anatase and rutile samples was estimated by XRD analysis from the ratio among the full width at half maximum intensities of the main diffraction peaks of anatase or rutile and the (111) peak of CaF2 as internal standard. The photocatalytic activity of selected powders was tested employing the photodegradation of 4-nitrophenol in aqueous solution as probe reaction. The results showed that the photoactivity of the investigated samples increased with increasing crystallinity and crystallite size.
Study of the structural changes induced by air oxidation in Ti–Si–N hard coatings.
2008
International audience; 3-μm thick Ti–Si–N coatings were deposited on polished X38CrMoV5 substrates by sputtering a composite Ti–Si target in Ar–N2 reactive mixture. Oxidation tests were performed in air at 700 °C during 2 h. Whatever the silicon content in the range 0–4 at.%, no silicon containing compound was detected by XRD before air oxidation and only the TiN phase was evidenced. The mean grain size estimated from the full width at half maximum of the TiN (111) diffraction peak was close to 10 nm. As commonly reported for Ti–Si–N films, the hardness showed a maximum at 51 GPa versus the Si content. After oxidation of the TiN film, XRD and micro-Raman analyses revealed the occurrence of…
The use of equine K4b2 during incremental field exercise tests in driven Standardbred trotters: a preliminary study
2011
The equine K4b2 system is well tolerated by horses and allows O2 and CO2 measurements in field conditions up to maximal workload. The relationship between maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and maximal aerobic speed (MAS) still needs to be established.
Predicting maximum annual values of event soil loss by USLE-type models
2017
Abstract Previous experimental investigations showed that a large proportion of total plot soil erosion over a long time period is generally due to relatively few, large storms. Consequently, erosion models able to accurately predict the highest plot soil loss values have practical importance since they could allow to improve the design of soil conservation practices in an area of interest. At present USLE-based models are attractive from a practical point of view, since the input data are generally easy to obtain. The USLE was developed with specific reference to the mean annual temporal scale but it was also applied at the event scale. Other models, such as the USLE-M and the USLE-MM, app…
