Composite laminates buckling optimization through Levy based Ant Colony Optimization
2010
In this paper, the authors propose the use of the Levy probability distribution as leading mechanism for solutions differentiation in an efficient and bio-inspired optimization algorithm, ant colony optimization in continuous domains, ACOR. In the classical ACOR, new solutions are constructed starting from one solution, selected from an archive, where Gaussian distribution is used for parameter diversification. In the proposed approach, the Levy probability distributions are properly introduced in the solution construction step, in order to couple the ACOR algorithm with the exploration properties of the Levy distribution. The proposed approach has been tested on mathematical test functions…
Noterelle al «Filostrato» e al «Ninfale fiesolano» di Giovanni Boccaccio
2022
Abstract: This paper presents three brief reading notes on as many passages of the Filostrato (IV 51:1-8; IV 56, 4-8) and the Ninfale fiesolano (229, 1-5) by Giovanni Boccaccio, in the search for probable classical and medieval latin sources and models that have so far escaped the attention of scholars.
The Decision Making Tendency Inventory: A new measure to assess maximizing, satisficing, and minimizing
2015
Abstract We introduce the Decision Making Tendency Inventory (DMTI), a new scale for measuring the decision-making tendencies to maximize, to satisfice, and to minimize. The scale has promising psychometric properties. Our findings show that the revealed tendencies are independent from each other and from the specific decision-making domain. Each factor is differently related to a set of indices of well-being and functioning, suggesting intriguing considerations regarding the distinctive characteristics of maximizing, satisficing, and minimizing. The DMTI extends previous research on maximizing and might contribute to explain the inconsistent results in the literature. Directions for future…
Positive and nodal solutions for nonlinear nonhomogeneous parametric neumann problems
2020
We consider a parametric Neumann problem driven by a nonlinear nonhomogeneous differential operator plus an indefinite potential term. The reaction term is superlinear but does not satisfy the Ambrosetti-Rabinowitz condition. First we prove a bifurcation-type result describing in a precise way the dependence of the set of positive solutions on the parameter λ > 0. We also show the existence of a smallest positive solution. Similar results hold for the negative solutions and in this case we have a biggest negative solution. Finally using the extremal constant sign solutions we produce a smooth nodal solution.
The chimeric ALT-vastus lateralis free flap in reconstruction of advanced BRONJ of the maxilla.
2015
Introduction Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a dangerous complication of bisphosphonates, a class of pharmaceutical agents used in numerous bone disor- ders. No gold standard therapy exists, but recent literature suggests that, in advanced stages, the best results are achieved with aggressive debridement. In this paper, we report our experience of treatment of stage 3 BRONJ of the maxilla with extensive surgical debridement and reconstruction with a chimeric ALT-Vastus lateralis flap. Methods Five selected patients with stage 3 BRONJ underwent partial maxillectomy with dis- ease-free margins followed by immediate reconstruction with a chimeric ALT-Vastus lateralis…
Management of Primary Non-Aggressive Mandibular Giant Cell Tumor: A 14 Years' Experience
2011
Giant cell tumor is a rare non-odontogenic lesion that represents approximately 4-5% of all primary bone tumors. Such lesions derive their actual name from the constant presence of numerous giant cells, similar to osteoclasts .All the giant cell tumors hystorically is treated with curettage. Because this conservative approach is often associated with a recurrence rate of up to 70% , aggressive resection has become the standard practice. Unfortunately ,recurrence after wide resection is about 7%. The aim of the study is to describe the 14 years single institution experience with management of primary non-aggressive giant cell tumor of the jaws bone.
The Surgical Management of Oroantral Communications: Recommendations for Routine Practice Combined Endoscopic and Intraoral Approach
2023
An oroantral communication (OAC) is a common complication in alveolar surgery that usually occurs as a result of the extraction of maxillary posterior teeth, which do not usually resolve spontaneously. Other causes may include trauma, maxillary cysts and tumours, and infections. The practicing oral and maxillofacial surgeon treating patients with oroantral communication (OAC)/oroantral fistulas should be familiar and competent with the various treatment options available. . In most cases, surgery is performed via a Tran’s oral approach and the fistula is closed with local flaps, but the results are often unsatisfactory. Although different procedures have proved to be successful, all are pre…
Evidence of field cancerization of oral squamous cell carcinoma: a case report
2014
Objectives. From 1953 (1) the term “field cancerization” has been used to describe an “increased risk of cancer de- velopment in the entire upper aerodigestive tract due to multiple genetic abnormalities in the whole region after pro- longed exposure to carcinogen” (2). This phenomenon implies the occurrence of multiple primary tumors/potentially malignant disorders as results of cell-molecular aberrations in different independent sites (polyclonal theory) or from the same site through widespread expansion or later spread across the mucosa (monoclonal theory). Case report. A 63-year-old female patient referred in June of 2014 for exophytic/ulcerative lesion in the hard palate. At the same t…
Hastening of wound healing of mucosa by means of aminoacids combined to sodium hyaluronate after oral biopsy: an open trial.
2014
Sodium hyaluronate has been widely used in order to promote wound healing in oral cavity for its anti-inflammatory effects. Aim of this clinical trial was to evaluate the efficacy of aminoacids added to topical sodium hyaluronate, in minor oral surgery. After surgery by means of Quantic molecular resonance scalpel, in 27 patients a gel with sodium hyaluronate has been applied directly on the surgical wound, in order to favorite healing by secondary intention. Furthermore, gel has been applied 3-4times/day, after meals and oral hygiene. Hemostatic effect, edema and pain symptoms by VAS (Visual Analogue Scale;0-100), and clinical healing (full, partial, absent) have been evaluated at T#1(2hrs…
Recurrent ossifying fibroma of the maxillary sinus in an adult patient.
2013
In some aspects, the terminology of fibro-osseous lesions of the head remain equivocal. The WHO classification suggested to group cemento-ossifying fibroma and ossifying fibroma under the term "ossifying fibroma". Based on the different age of onset, localization and risk of recurrence, two types have been described: "juvenile ossifying fibroma", with early age of onset, which needs to be treated with wide surgical resection due to the high risk of recurrence; and "adult ossifying fibroma", arising in adult patients, with low recurrence rate, properly treated by conservative surgery. We describe a case of an "adult ossifying fibroma" of a 57-yearold woman with several relapses, for whom con…
