Effects of between-set interventions on neuromuscular function during isokinetic maximal concentric contractions of the knee extensors

2011

The presents study investigated the effects of between-set interventions on neuromuscular function of the knee extensors during six sets of 10 isokinetic (120°·s(-1)) maximal concentric contractions separated by three minutes. Twelve healthy men (age: 23.9 ± 2.4 yrs) were tested for four different between-set recovery conditions applied during two minutes: passive recovery, active recovery (cycling), electromyostimulation and stretching, in a randomized, crossover design. Before, during and at the end of the isokinetic session, torque and thigh muscles electromyographic activity were measured during maximal voluntary contractions and electrically-evoked doublets. Activation level was calcul…

Hygienian valo : Max Oker-Blomin valistuskirjallisuus 1900-luvun alussa

2006

Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan hygienian professori Max Oker-Blomin 1900-luvun alkuun ajoittuneen hygieniavalistuskirjallisuuden kautta Oker-Blomin hygieniaa koskevaa argumentaatiota, hygieenistä vallankäyttöä ja asemaa hygienialiikkeen piirissä. Oker-Blomin kohdeyleisön hahmottamisella on tärkeä osa tutkielmassa, sillä tätä kautta hahmottuu m…

A stochastic reaction-diffusion-taxis model for picophytoplankton dynamics

2011

The dynamics of picophytoplankton communities in marine environment is studied by astochastic reaction-dìffusìon-taxis model, analyzing the time evolution of the biomass concentration along a water column. The model is based on two stochastic differentìal equations, where the random fluctuations of the environmental variables are considered by inserting two multiplicative noise terms. Specifically, the model describes the dynamics of diffusion of picophytoplankton biomass and nutrient concentrations. In the proposed model the marine environment is characterized by poorly mixed waters and picophytoplankton is subject to intraspecific competition for light and nutrients. By numerically solvin…

A stochastic reaction-diffusion-taxis model for two picophytoplankton populations

2012

In this work, the stationary distributions of two populations of picophytoplankton, i.e. picoeukaryotes and Prochlorococcus, are studied. This two groups account on average for 60% of the total chlorophyll a (chl a) and divinil chlorophyll a (divinil chl a) concentration in Mediterranean Sea. The interaction of these populations with the environment occurs through two factors that limit the growth of the aquatic microorganisms: light intensity and nutrient, i.e. phosphorus. The dynamics of the two picophytoplanktonic groups, distributed at different depth along a water column (one-dimensional spatial domain), is analyzed starting from a deterministic reaction-diffusion-taxis model. This con…

Reparative giant cell granuloma in a pediatric patient

2007

Reparative giant cell granulomas are benign, infrequent tumors, of non-odontogenic origin, that develop at central or peripheral level. Peripherally located lesions are frequently denominated ‘giant cell epulis’, and never correspond to true neoplasia, but rather to inflammatory reactions secondary to another lesion (hemorrhage, etc.). It should be taken into account, that in general, head and neck tumors of infancy usually demonstrate an atypical biological behaviour. Furthermore, the anatomicopathologic diagnosis is often compromised in this type of lesion. We present the case of a 6-year-old boy, who, three weeks after suffering a slight facial trauma, developed a painless, exophytic swe…

Peak oxygen uptake cut-points to identify children at increased cardiometabolic risk - The PANIC Study.

2019

We aimed to develop cut -points for directly measured peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak ) to identify boys and girls at increased cardiometabolic risk using different scaling methods to control for body size and composition. Altogether 352 children (186 boys, 166 girls) aged 9 – 11 years were included in the analyses. We measured VO2peak directly during a maximal cycle ergometer exercise test and lean body mass (LM) by bioelectrical impedance. We computed a sex - and age -specific cardiometabolic risk score (CRS) by summing important cardiometabolic risk factors and defined increased cardiometabolic risk as >1 standard deviation above the mean of CRS. Receiver operating characteristics curves wer…

A Novel Bio-Inspired Approach for High-Performance Management in Service-Oriented Networks

2021

Service-continuity in distributed computing can be enhanced by designing self-organized systems, with a non-fixed structure, able to modify their structure and organization, as well as adaptively react to internal and external environment changes. In this paper, an architecture exploiting a bio-inspired management approach, i.e., the functioning of cell metabolism, for specialized computing environments in Service-Oriented Networks (SONs) is proposed. Similar to the processes acting in metabolic networks, the nodes communicate to each other by means of stimulation or suppression chains giving rise to emergent behaviors to defend against foreign invaders, attacks, and malfunctioning. The mai…
