Transoral surgical approach to solitary fibrous tumors in buccal space with infratemporal tumor extension : a case report

2020

A solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is a rare spindle-cell neoplasm of mesenchymal origin usually located in the pleura. It has been recently described as occurring in various head and neck sites, including the oral cavity. The purpose of this article is to report a case of SFT originating in the buccal space and extending into the infratemporal space treated by means of transoral approach surgery. A 25-year-old female patient reported to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Universitas Airlangga Hospital, chiefly complaining of a painless lump in the left cheek which had been present for nine months. The diagnosis was arrived at on the basis of a combination of clinical investigat…

Physical training considerations for optimizing performance in essential military tasks.

2021

Physically demanding essential military tasks include load carriage, manual material handling and casualty evacuation. This narrative review characterizes the main physical attributes related to performance of these occupational tasks and reviews physical training intervention studies in military settings to improve performance in these military tasks. Load carriage performance requires both aerobic and neuromuscular fitness with greater emphasis on maximal strength and absolute maximal oxygen uptake, especially when carrying heavier loads. In manual material handling, maximal strength and power are strongly associated with discrete lifting, while muscular strength, muscular endurance and a…

Effects of concurrent strength and endurance training in women with early or longstanding rheumatoid arthritis: Comparison with healthy subjects

2003

Objective To investigate the effects of a 21-week concurrent strength and endurance training protocol on physical fitness profile in women with early or longstanding rheumatoid arthritis (RA) compared with healthy subjects. Methods Twenty-three female patients with RA volunteered for the study. Twelve had early RA and eleven had longstanding RA. Twelve healthy women served as controls. Maximal strength of different muscle groups was measured by dynamometers, walking speed with light cells, and vertical squat jump on the force platform to mirror explosive force. Maximal oxygen uptake was measured by gas analyzer. Six training sessions (3 strength training and 3 endurance training) were carri…

Effects of combined endurance and strength training on muscle strength, power and hypertrophy in 40-67-year-old men

2009

Both strength and endurance training have several positive effects on aging muscle and physical performance of middle-aged and older adults, but their combination may compromise optimal adaptation. This study examined the possible interference of combined strength and endurance training on neuromuscular performance and skeletal muscle hypertrophy in previously untrained 40-67-year-old men. Maximal strength and muscle activation in the upper and lower extremities, maximal concentric power, aerobic capacity and muscle fiber size and distribution in the vastus lateralis muscle were measured before and after a 21-week training period. Ninety-six men [mean age 56 (SD 7) years] completed high-int…

Rapid prototyping modelling in oral and maxillofacial surgery: a two year retrospective study

2015

Background The use of rapid prototyping (RP) models in medicine to construct bony models is increasing. Material and Methods The aim of the study was to evaluate retrospectively the indication for the use of RP models in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Helsinki University Central Hospital during 2009-2010. Also, the used computed tomography (CT) examination – multislice CT (MSCT) or cone beam CT (CBCT) - method was evaluated. Results In total 114 RP models were fabricated for 102 patients. The mean age of the patients at the time of the production of the model was 50.4 years. The indications for the modelling included malignant lesions (29%), secondary reconstruction (25%), prosthodontic …

Osteoporosis and bisphosphonates-related osteonecrosis of the jaw: Not just a sporadic coincidence-a multi-centre study

2011

Abstract Introduction Bisphosphonates (BPs) are powerful drugs that inhibit bone metabolism. Adverse side effects are rare but potentially severe such as bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ). To date, research has primarily focused on the development and progression of BRONJ in cancer patients with bone metastasis, who have received high dosages of BPs intravenously. However, a potential dilemma may arise from a far larger cohort, namely the millions of osteoporosis patients on long-term oral BP therapy. Patients and methods This current study assessed 470 cases of BRONJ diagnosed between 2004 and 2008 at eleven different European clinical centres and has resulted in the …

Juvenile central ossifying fibroma of the mandible: a case report

2010

Central ossifying fibroma is a rare fibro-osseous neoplasm in young children. It is highly aggressive and has a strong tendency to recur. We describe an 11-year-old girl with juvenile central ossifying fibromas of the mandible that caused obstruction of tooth eruption of the lower left second premolar. Oral examination revealed the presence of the primary lower left second molar and a small bony hard swelling over the left side of the mandibular body. After a computed tomographic scan, an incisional biopsy was performed, and the lesion proved to be a juvenile ossifying fibroma. Although this tumor often recurs early, and many authors suggest radical en bloc resection, we performed a more co…

Both poor cardiorespiratory and weak muscle fitness are related to a high concentration of oxidized low-density lipoprotein lipids

2011

Good physical fitness is associated with favorable serum lipids. Oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) could be even more atherogenic than serum lipids. We studied the association of ox-LDL and serum lipids with physical fitness. Healthy young (mean age 25 years) men (n=846) underwent maximal oxygen uptake (VO(2max)) and muscle fitness index (MFI) tests and completed a leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) questionnaire. Age (ANCOVA1), age+waist circumference+systolic blood pressure+fasting blood glucose+smoking (ANCOVA3) were used as covariates. The groups with the lowest VO(2max), MFI and LTPA had 23%, 16% and 8% higher concentrations of ox-LDL than the groups with the highest VO(2max…

Intraoral soft tissue lipomas: clinicopathological features from 91 cases diagnosed in a single Oral Pathology service.

2020

Background intraoral soft tissue lipomas are relatively uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms. Few papers have been published comparing the clinicopathological features of these tumors in different populations. The aim of the present study was to analyze the clinicopathological features from intraoral soft tissue lipomas diagnosed in a Brazilian population. Material and Methods all cases diagnosed as intraoral soft tissue lipomas in an Oral Pathology laboratory from 2005 to 2019 were retrieved and descriptively analyzed; statistical analysis was performed for comparison of the clinical and demographic parameters. Results 91 intraoral lipomas were retrieved, including 56 lipomas, 30 fibrolipomas, 2…

Clinical and Epidemiological Study on Patients with Mandibular Fractures within the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Compartment in the Sibiu County Cl…

2019

Abstract Traumatology from the oral and maxillofacial area represents a very important and frequent pathology within this specialty, the mandibular fractures occupying the first place in terms of location and frequency due to the anatomical prominent position of the mandible. The first three etiological factors are represented by aggressions, accidental falls and car accidents. This article, accomplished in collaboration with the statistical service of the Sibiu County Clinical Emergency Hospital, aims at analysing the distribution by sex, origin environments, levels of studies, presentation of patients, analysis which was broken down by days of the week, frequent symptoms of these types of…
