Impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions 6 and 12 months after breast cancer operation.

2005

OBJECTIVE: To describe the impairments of upper body and limbs, activity limitations and participation restrictions 6 and 12 months after operation for breast cancer and to examine the impact of impairments on activity limitations.\ud \ud DESIGN: A prospective survey 6 and 12 months after operation.\ud \ud PATIENTS: Ninety-six breast cancer patients.\ud \ud METHODS: A questionnaire for assessing the impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions was developed.\ud \ud RESULTS: The most common impairments 6 months after operation were breast and axilla scar tightness, axilla oedema and neck-shoulder pain. At 12-month follow-up the breast scar tightness (p=0.008) and axilla o…

Direct and Indirect Effects of Function in Associated Variables Such as Depression and Severity on Pain Intensity in Women with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

2015

Objective To determine the direct and indirect effects of function on clinical variables such as age, pain intensity, years of the disease, severity of symptoms, and depression in women with electrodiagnostic and clinical diagnosis of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). Design A cross-sectional study. Setting Patients from an urban hospital referred to a university clinic. Methods Two hundred and forty-four (n = 224) women with CTS were included. Demographic and clinical data, duration of symptoms, function, symptom's severity of the symptoms, pain intensity, and depression were self-reported collected. Correlation and path analysis with maximum likelihood estimation were conducted to assess the …

Reliability and Validity of a New Objective Tool for Low Back Pain Functional Assessment

2011

Study design Classification and functional assessment model for nonspecific low back pain (LBP) patients and controls on the basis of kinematic analysis parameters. Objective Develop a logistic regression model using kinematic analysis variables to (1) discriminate between LBP patients and controls and (2) obtain objective parameters for LBP functional assessment. Summary of background data Functional assessment of spinal disorders has been carried out traditionally by means of subjective scales. Objective functional techniques have been developed, which usually involve the application of external loads or the analysis of highly standardized trunk flexion-extension maneuvers. Few studies ha…

Treatment of orofacial pain in patients with stylomandibular ligament syndrome (Ernest Syndrome).

2013

Introduction: Ernest syndrome involves the stylomandibular ligament. It is characterised by pain in the preauricular area and mandibular angle, radiating to the neck, shoulder, and eye on the same side, and associated with pain during palpation of that ligament. The purpose of this study is to describe the clinical characteristics, treatment, and course of the disease in a series of patients with Ernest syndrome. Methods: Retrospective observational study covering the period from 1998 to 2008. We recorded patients’ age, sex, duration of the disorder, and pain characteristics. All patients were injected with 40 mg triamcinolone acetonide at the mandibular insertion of the stylomandibular lig…

The effective group size for teaching cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills – A randomized controlled simulation trial

2021

Abstract Aim of the study The ideal group size for effective teaching of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is currently under debate. The upper limit is reached when instructors are unable to correct participants’ errors during skills practice. This simulation study aimed to define this limit during cardiopulmonary resuscitation teaching. Methods Medical students acting as simulated Basic Life Support course participants were instructed to make three different pre-defined Basic Life Support quality errors (e.g., chest compression too fast) in 7 min. Basic Life Support instructors were randomized to groups of 3–10 participants. Instructors were asked to observe the Basic Life Support skills and …

Preterm birth: seven-year retrospective study in a single centre population

2019

Preterm birth is a health and social problem, considered the leading cause of neonatal mortality worldwide. It is associated with higher rates of neurodevelopmental morbidity, sensorineural impairments and other complications. The aim of the study was to describe the incidence and the major risk factors associated with preterm birth. METHODS: We performed a single center, observational and retrospective Cohort study in the Division of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, University Hospital "G. Martino", Messina. Clinical records of all pregnant women who delivered from 1st January 2010 to 31 of December 2016 were collected. RESULTS: In the 7 years considered, a total of 7954 pregnant women were inc…

The association between intrapartum opioid fentanyl and early breastfeeding: A prospective observational study

2021

Introduction: Intrapartum opioids in labor may interfere with the early breastfeeding phase and cause breastfeeding difficulties. This study examines the effects of intrapartum fentanyl given intravenously (IV) or through epidural analgesia (EDA) on early breastfeeding. Material and methods: This is a prospective observational study conducted in a regional maternity unit. We included 1101 healthy mothers of term singleton babies in vertex presentation born between 2016 and 2018 (468 nulliparous and 633 multiparous). The main data were collected prospectively, and additional data were retrieved from hospital records. The main outcome measures were exclusive breastfeeding at discharge, sponta…

Laparoscopic Neuronavigation for Deep Lateral Pelvic Endometriosis: Clinical and Surgical Implications

2018

Abstract Study Objective To evaluate the clinical presentation and surgical outcome in patients with deep lateral pelvic endometriosis (dLPE). Design A retrospective multicentric study (Canadian Task Force classification II-2). Setting University tertiary referral centers. Patients One hundred forty-eight women with deep infiltrating endometriosis (DIE). Interventions Laparoscopic excision of DIE. Disease distribution was classified as follows: central pelvic endometriosis (CPE) when DIE involved 1 of the following anatomic sites: cervix, vagina, uterosacral ligaments, rectum, bladder, or pelvic peritoneum; superficial lateral pelvic endometriosis when parametria, ureters, or hypogastric pl…

Changes in a patient with neck pain after application of ischemic compression as a trigger point therapy

2010

Objective To describe the immediate effects of ischemic compression (IC) as a trigger point therapy in a case of a patient with neck pain. The application of IC is a safe and effective method to successfully treat elicited myofascial trigger points. The purpose of this method is to deliberate the blockage of blood in a trigger point area in order to increase local blood flow. This washes away waste products, supplies necessary oxygen and helps the affected tissue to heal. In this case study, we treated a 27-year-old female patient with a medical report of neck pain for at least four months. The physical examination revealed a neck pain and stiffness at the left side and pain increases when …

Fear of childbirth according to parity, gestational age, and obstetric history.

2008

Objective  To examine fear of childbirth according to parity, gestational age, and obstetric history. Design  A questionnaire study. Population and setting  1400 unselected pregnant women in outpatient maternity clinics of a university central hospital. Methods  Visual analogue scale (VAS) and Wijma Delivery Expectancy/Experience Questionnaire (W-DEQ) and preferred mode of delivery. Main outcome measures  W-DEQ and VAS scores according to parity, gestational age, obstetric history, and preferred mode of delivery. Results  The W-DEQ and VAS scores were higher in nulliparous (W-DEQ 72.0 ± 20.0 [mean ± SD] and VAS 4.7 [median]) than parous women (65.4 ± 21.9; 3.2, P < 0.001 for both W-DEQ and …
