Innovation for the Italian agricultural and food industry sector

2020

The food industry is one of the largest energy consumers in the world, with 95 EJ/year. In this context, in Europe the amount of energy needed to cultivate, process, package and bring food to the homes of citizens reached 285 Mtoe in 2015, of which 14 Mtoe due to the Italian agricultural and food system. With the aim of favoring a drastic reduction in energy consumption, the European Commission, and the main international agencies, ie: FAO, OECD, UN over the last decade have aligned on the need to develop policies to support energy efficiency, renewable energies and sustainable technologies in order to minimize the use of fossil fuels and to reduce the final energy consumption, especially i…

Nanostructured Ni Based Anode and Cathode for Alkaline Water Electrolyzers

2019

Owing to the progressive abandoning of the fossil fuels and the increase of atmospheric CO2 concentration, the use of renewable energies is strongly encouraged. The hydrogen economy provides a very interesting scenario. In fact, hydrogen is a valuable energy carrier and can act as a storage medium as well to balance the discontinuity of the renewable sources. In order to exploit the potential of hydrogen it must be made available in adequate quantities and at an affordable price. Both goals can be potentially achieved through the electrochemical water splitting, which is an environmentally friendly process as well as the electrons and water are the only reagents. However, these devices stil…

Three-mode pneumatic management of marine U-tank systems

2012

Abstract This paper deals with a new pneumatic control strategy for the roll damping enhancement of marine U-tank stabilizers. The proposed technique consists in a three-mode operation, where the control is active only within a limited resonant range around the ship natural frequency, whereas the control valves are kept closed in the remaining frequency range. Moreover the connection valve between the two air chambers is either closed or partially opened for the low or high frequencies, respectively. The pressurized air for the active control is fed by a turbo-blower set aboard and operates accelerating the motion of the water mass in the U-duct. The theoretical analysis is conducted in the…

An efficient proposal for the application of simulated annealing algorithms

2014

Complex nonlinear optimization problems require specific resolution techniques. These problems are often characterized by a solution space that presents many local optima. In these cases, local search algorithms, as the classical descent neighborhood search method, have a heavy drawback: the optimization algorithm generally converges towards a local minimum. To avoid getting trapped in a local minimum, the optimization algorithm must allow to accept worse solutions than the current one. Several kinds of algorithms have been ideated for this purpose and they differ for the acceptance criteria of a pejorative solution. Among such algorithms it is possible to remember the Taboo Search (TS) and…

Coupling Mechanics of Antikythera Gearwheels

2012

This paper discusses the gear coupling mechanics of the ancient Antikythera mechanism, among whose distinctive characteristics was the triangular shaping of the teeth. The engagement of the tooth pairs is analyzed in detail, estimating the temporal variation of the speed ratio due to the back and forth shifting of the relative instant center. The admissibility of the theoretical contact points is carefully checked, and the magnitude of the successive tooth collisions is calculated together with the energy losses arising from the particular nature of the coupling. Some interesting results are that only one tooth pair turns out to be active at each time instant and the real path may belong on…

Approximate Closed-Form Solutions for the Shift Mechanics of Rubber Belt Variators

2009

The mechanical behavior of V-belt variators during the speed ratio shift is different from the steady operation as a gross radial motion of the belt is superimposed to the circumferential motion. The theoretical analysis involves equilibrium equations similar to the steady case, but requires a re-formulation of the mass conservation condition making use of the Reynolds transport theorem. The mathematical model of the belt-pulley coupling implies the repeated numerical solution of a strongly non-linear differential system. Nevertheless, an attentive observation of the numerical diagrams suggests simple and useful closed-form approximations for the four possible working modes of any pulley, o…

Biodiversity and dairy traits of lactic acid bacteria from foliage of aromatic plants before and after dehydration process monitored by a smart senso…

2020

ABSTRACT The main hypothesis of this work was to evaluate the presence of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) intrinsically resistant to plant essential oils in sage (Salvia officinalis L.) and laurel (Laurus nobilis), for future applications in functional cheese production by addition of aromatic herbs. The effect of the drying process on the viability of LAB was evaluated with three biomass densities (3, 4 and 5 kg/m2). The drying densities did not affect weight loss, but influenced the levels of LAB of sage and laurel. A total of 10 different strains of Enterococcus faecium, Enterococcus mundtii, Enterococcus raffinosus and Leuconostoc mesenteroides were identified from laurel, while sage did not…

Machine learning at the interface of structural health monitoring and non-destructive evaluation

2020

While both non-destructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) share the objective of damage detection and identification in structures, they are distinct in many respects. This paper will discuss the differences and commonalities and consider ultrasonic/guided-wave inspection as a technology at the interface of the two methodologies. It will discuss how data-based/machine learning analysis provides a powerful approach to ultrasonic NDE/SHM in terms of the available algorithms, and more generally, how different techniques can accommodate the very substantial quantities of data that are provided by modern monitoring campaigns. Several machine learning methods will be illu…
