Oral amelanotic melanoma: a case report

2014

Objectives. Primary oral melanoma is a very rare malignancy, representing about 0.5% of all melanomas, characterized by a wide clinical-histological variability and a very aggressive behavior. Aim of the present study is to describe a case of oral amelanotic melanoma, an infrequent variant with a poorer prognosis than that of pigmented melanomas for a more aggressive biological behavior and frequent delays for the correct diagnosis and for starting the treatment. Case report. A 53-year-old white man referred at the Department Surgical, Oncological and Oral Sciences for a macular, scarsely pigmented lesion with irregular margins, located on anterior region of hard palate. The lesion, complet…

PRIMARY ORAL MUCOSA MELANOMA: A REPORT OF AN UNUSUAL CLINICOPATHOLOGICAL CASE

2014

Primary oral melanoma is a rare malignancy with an aggressive behaviour. Up to date, the wide clinicalhistological variability of this oncological entity does not clarify the etiopathogenetic characteristics of these cancers and limit the therapeutic strategies. We report a case of a 64-year-old white female referred to the Dept. of Surgical, Oncological and Oral Sciences for a pigmented lesion of the mandibular gingiva, already arising 20 years ago but dimensionally increased in the last three months. Clinically, a black plaque-like pigmentation of the vestibular alveolar mucosa of the mandible (from 3.6 to 3.3) was observed. This lesions was still painless. CT dentalscan and ecography of …

Ziliarkörpermetastase als Ersthinweis auf ein kleinzelliges Bronchialkarzinom1

2000

BACKGROUND About 3-10% of patients suffering from metastatic disease develop metastatic choroidal tumors. In this case report ocular symptoms were the first sign of a systemic malignancy. CASE REPORT A 65-year old man complained of an increasing painful redness of his left eye. He showed a white mass with 10 mm in thickness in the temporal chamber angle with "pseudohypopyon" and secondary glaucoma. Because of increasing pain the eye was removed. Histologic examination showed a small cell carcinoma of the ciliary body with high malignancy, which most probably has to be seen as a metastasis of a carcinoma of the lung, which was detected by internal examination concurrently. In addition, a met…

Hyperspectral imaging reveals spectral differences and can distinguish malignant melanoma from pigmented basal cell carcinomas : A pilot study

2021

Pigmented basal cell carcinomas can be difficult to distinguish from melanocytic tumours. Hyperspectral imaging is a non-invasive imaging technique that measures the reflectance spectra of skin in vivo. The aim of this prospective pilot study was to use a convolutional neural network classifier in hyperspectral images for differential diagnosis between pigmented basal cell carcinomas and melanoma. A total of 26 pigmented lesions (10 pigmented basal cell carcinomas, 12 melanomas in situ, 4 invasive melanomas) were imaged with hyperspectral imaging and excised for histopathological diagnosis. For 2-class classifier (melanocytic tumours vs pigmented basal cell carcinomas) using the majority of…

Identification of progenitor cancer stem cell in lentigo maligna melanoma.

2008

:  The potential role of stem cells in neoplasia has aroused considerable interest over the past few years. A number of known biologic characteristics of melanomas support the theory that they may originate in a mutated stem cell. Melanocytic stem cell markers have been described recently. Moreover, the CD133 cells that show surface markers for CD34 are stem cells primitive. These stem cells are capable of differentiating into neurons, glia, keratinocytes, smooth muscle cells, and melanocytes in vitro. The identification of cancer stem/initiating cells with a crucial role in tumor formation may open up new pharmacologic perspectives. The purpose of this study is to detect the expression of …

Application of principal component analysis to multispectral imaging data for evaluation of pigmented skin lesions

2013

Non-invasive and fast primary diagnostics of pigmented skin lesions is required due to frequent incidence of skin cancer – melanoma. Diagnostic potential of principal component analysis (PCA) for distant skin melanoma recognition is discussed. Processing of the measured clinical multi-spectral images (31 melanomas and 94 nonmalignant pigmented lesions) in the wavelength range of 450-950 nm by means of PCA resulted in 87 % sensitivity and 78 % specificity for separation between malignant melanomas and pigmented nevi.

549 An RNA-lipoplex (RNA-LPX) vaccine demonstrates strong immunogenicity and promising clinical activity in a Phase I trial in cutaneous melanoma pat…

2021

BackgroundLipo-MERIT is an ongoing, first-in-human, open-label, dose-escalation Phase I trial investigating safety, tolerability and immunogenicity of BNT111 in patients with advanced melanoma. BNT111 is an RNA-LPX vaccine targeting the melanoma tumor-associated antigens (TAAs) New York esophageal squamous cell carcinoma 1 (NY-ESO-1), tyrosinase, melanoma-associated antigen 3 (MAGE-A3), and transmembrane phosphatase with tensin homology (TPTE). A previous exploratory interim analysis showed that BNT111, alone or combined with immune checkpoint inhibition (CPI), has a favorable adverse event (AE) profile, gives rise to antigen-specific T-cell responses and induces durable objective responses…

Clinical and Prognostic Value of 18F-FDG-PET/CT in the Restaging Process of Recurrent Cutaneous Melanoma

2020

Background: Several studies on 18F-FDG-PET/CT have investigated the prognostic role of this imaging modality in different tumors after treatment. Nevertheless, its role in restaging patients with recurrent CM still needs to be defined. Objective: The aim of this retrospective multicenter study was to evaluate the clinical and prognostic impact of 18F-FDG-PET/CT on the restaging process of cutaneous melanoma (CM) after surgery in patients with suspected distant recurrent disease or suspected metastatic progression disease. Materials and Methods: 74 patients surgically treated for CM underwent 18F-FDG-PET/CT for suspected distant recurrent disease or suspected metastatic progression disease.…
