Simulations of stellar/pulsar wind interaction along one full orbit

2012

The winds from a non-accreting pulsar and a massive star in a binary system collide forming a bow-shaped shock structure. The Coriolis force induced by orbital motion deflects the shocked flows, strongly affecting their dynamics. We study the evolution of the shocked stellar and pulsar winds on scales in which the orbital motion is important. Potential sites of non-thermal activity are investigated. Relativistic hydrodynamical simulations in two dimensions, performed with the code PLUTO and using the adaptive mesh refinement technique, are used to model interacting stellar and pulsar winds on scales ~80 times the distance between the stars. The hydrodynamical results suggest the suitable lo…

Influence of gas environment on the dynamics of wetting transition of laser-textured stainless steel meshes

2021

We analyze the role of surrounding gas and aging in ambient air in the wettability behavior of laser-processed stainless steel meshes. Laser texturing of meshes was carried out in the presence of different gases (N2, O2, CO2, Ar, and SF6) in ambient atmospheric air and under different vacuum conditions. The influence of each gas on the evolution of the wettability properties after aging in ambient air is analyzed. The effects of low-pressure and vacuum aging allowed transforming the initial superhydrophilic characteristics of the laser-structured meshes to an almost superhydrophobic state.

Adaptive discontinuous evolution Galerkin method for dry atmospheric flow

2014

We present a new adaptive genuinely multidimensional method within the framework of the discontinuous Galerkin method. The discontinuous evolution Galerkin (DEG) method couples a discontinuous Galerkin formulation with approximate evolution operators. The latter are constructed using the bicharacteristics of multidimensional hyperbolic systems, such that all of the infinitely many directions of wave propagation are considered explicitly. In order to take into account multiscale phenomena that typically appear in atmospheric flows nonlinear fluxes are split into a linear part governing the acoustic and gravitational waves and a nonlinear part that models advection. Time integration is realiz…

External stenting with a new polyester mesh reduces neointimal hyperplasia of vein grafts in a sheep model.

2007

Objective External stents placed around vein grafts have demonstrated effectiveness in reducing neointimal hyperplasia by preventing distension of the thin-walled vein grafts when exposed to arterial pressure. However, the ideal stent material has yet to be defined. The following study investigates the short- and long-term effects of an innovative polyester mesh stent designed with optimized adaptation of circumferential compliance. Methods Following in vitro definition of the ideal macro-porous polyester stent material, a total of 12 sheep underwent implantation of bilateral carotid artery vein graft bypasses. In six sheep, the short-term outcome (four weeks of implantation) was investigat…

Generic attribute deviation metric for assessing mesh simplification algorithm quality

2002

International audience; This paper describes an efficient method to compare two triangular meshes. Meshes considered here contain geometric features as well as other surface attributes such as material colors, texture, temperature, radiation, etc. Two deviation measurements are presented to assess the differences between two meshes. The first measurement, called geometric deviation, returns geometric differences. The second measurement , called attribute deviation, returns attribute differences regardless of the attribute type. In this paper we present an application of this method to the Mesh Simplification Algorithm (MSA) quality assessment according to the appearance attributes. This ass…

Efficiently using connectivity information between triangles in a mesh for real-time rendering

2004

Triangle meshes are the most popular standard model used to represent polygonal surfaces. Drawing these meshes as a set of independent triangles involves sending a vast amount of information to the graphics system. Taking advantage of the connectivity information between the triangles in a mesh dramatically diminishes the amount of information the graphics system must handle. Multiresolution Triangle Strips (MTS) represent a triangle mesh as a collection of multiresolution triangles strips. These strips are the basis of both the storage and the rendering stage. The coherence between the extraction of two levels of detail is used in the model in order to decrease the visualisation time.

Locally constrained synthetic LoDs generation for natural terrain meshes

2004

Terrain representation is a basic topic in the field of interactive graphics. The amount of data required for a good quality of the terrain offers an important challenge to developers of such systems. For users of these applications, the accuracy of geographical data is generally less important than its natural visual appearance. This makes it possible to maintain a limited geographical database for the system and to extend it generating synthetic data. The evaluation of the intrinsic properties of the terrain (i.e. fractal dimension, roughness, etc.) may be used as the basis for generating extra data accomplishing the same patterns discovered in the actual information. However, it is also …

A new Media Access Control layer Quality of Service multicast scheme for IEEE 802.11s based wireless mesh networks

2014

Inderscience Publishers; International audience; We propose a new Media Access Control (MAC) layer enabling Quality of Service (QoS) multicast scheme for IEEE 802.11s networks, where a unicast routing protocol called HWMP (Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol) is defined. The HWMP protocol is more adapted for best effort traffic, that's why its usage is not suitable for real time multimedia applications. The goal of our proposed mechanism is to take into account multicast communication under QoS constraints for the IEEE 802.11s mesh networks where no QoS multicasting has been defined. Our multicasting scheme handles QoS guarantee for real time applications. Indeed, our scheme is based on finding t…

A Meshfree Solver for the MEG Forward Problem

2015

Noninvasive estimation of brain activity via magnetoencephalography (MEG) involves an inverse problem whose solution requires an accurate and fast forward solver. To this end, we propose the Method of Fundamental Solutions (MFS) as a meshfree alternative to the Boundary Element Method (BEM). The solution of the MEG forward problem is obtained, via the Method of Particular Solutions (MPS), by numerically solving a boundary value problem for the electric scalar potential, derived from the quasi-stationary approximation of Maxwell’s equations. The magnetic field is then computed by the Biot-Savart law. Numerical experiments have been carried out in a realistic single-shell head geometry. The p…

Efficient Implementation of Multiresolution Triangle Strips

2002

Triangle meshes are currently the most popular standard modelto represent polygonal surfaces. Drawing these meshes as a set of independent triangles involves sending a vast amount of information to the graphic engine. It has been shown that using drawing primitives, such as triangle fans or strips, dramatically reduces the amount of information. Multiresolution Triangle Strips (MTS) uses the connectivity information to represent a mesh as a set of multiresolution triangles strips. These strips are the basis of both the storage and rendering stages. They allow the efficient management of a wide range of levels of detail. In this paper, we have taken advantage of the coherence property betwee…
