On-line preconcentration strategies for analyzing pesticides in fruits and vegetables by micellar electrokinetic chromatography.

2007

Five pesticides (fludioxonil, procymidone, pyriproxyfen, dinoseb and carbendazim) were separated in reversed migration micellar electrokinetic chromatography (RM-MEKC) using 20 mmol l(-1) phosphate buffer at pH 2.3, containing 25 mmol l(-1) sodium dodecylsulfate and 10% methanol. Three on-line concentration strategies, sweeping (SW), normal stacking with reversed migration and a water plug (SRW) and stacking with reverse migration and removal of sample matrix using polarity switching (SRMM), were compared. About 10-, 30- and 50-fold increases in detection sensitivity, compared with standard hydrodynamic injection (5 s at 0.5 psi), were observed with SW, SRW and SRMM, respectively. Limits of…

Solid-phase extraction on C18 in the trace determination of selected polychlorinated biphenyls in milk.

1995

The utility of solid-phase extraction with octadecylsilica for determining fifteen polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners from milk samples was examined. Recoveries higher than 80% and relative standard deviations better than 10% were obtained for PCBs from different kinds of milk (whole, skimmed, 2%, powdered, breast and evaporated). A comparison with other procedures was made. The described method provides better detection limits than those attainable with the liquid-liquid extractions currently used as standard methods, when capillary gas-liquid chromatography is used for the final determination. A study of the separation was also performed using six different fused-silica capillary co…

Determination of inorganic species by thermal lens spectrometry

1997

Abstract The application of thermal lens spectrometry (TLS) to the determination of inorganic species is reviewed. The requirements of a chromogenic reaction to be advantageously adapted to TLS detection, and the necessary conditions for reaching very low limits of detection are discussed. Methods for the determination of metals and P, Si, S and N compounds in several samples are examined. Flow-injection and extraction methods, associated photoinduced reactions and surface phenomena, speciation and equilibrium studies are discussed. Gas phase NO 2 methods are also commented upon. Trends are given.

Hard Cap Espresso Machine Extraction of Polyphenolic Compounds from Pulses

2018

A hard cap espresso machine was employed for the extraction of polyphenolic compounds from food samples as dry legumes and pulses. 100 mg of ground dry sample was mixed with a dispersing agent and placed in a refillable stainless steel capsule with a borosilicate filter. A complete polyphenol extraction was achieved by using 150 mL ethanol 50 % (v/v) in water and determined by Folin-Ciocalteu spectrophotometric method. The method provided a limit of detection of 0.4 mg g-1. The whole extraction procedure was achieved in less than one minute using the mild extraction conditions of 72°C and 19 bars given by the domestic machine. Fifteen varieties of food samples (3 lent…

Determination of NH(3) in pyrolysis gases by ammonia selective electrode.

1993

The suitability of ion-selective electrode for the determination of ammonia in pyrolysis gases of fossil fuels was studied. The ammonia was absorbed into acidic solution and two kinds of determination methods were carried out. The ammonia was either measured directly from the acid solution, or ammonia was first released into the gas phase and then determined (air gap method) by the ammonia selective electrode. The electrode functioned well in both cases, but the linear calibration range was rather narrow, slightly more than one tenfold. The quantitative detection limit in the water phase was 5 × 10−6M (0.085 ppm) NH3 and in gas phase operation solutions above 5 × 10−4M (8.5 ppm) NH3 it was …

Sensory & consumer studies with special populations: children and elderly

2015

revue créée en 2015; The need to adapt the usual sensory methods to face the particularities of children and elderly has been emphasized since many years. A diversity of methods that could be used with children according to their developmental stage, and to a lesser extent with elderly depending on their cognitive status, have been described. This review aims at underlining limits but also possibilities for measuring, in children and elderly, sensory reactions, food acceptance and also for exploring cognitive aspects of food perception. The main points to conduct successfully sensory and consumer studies with these populations are highlighted.

The comparison of reliabilities in dental imaging methods.

2003

Objectives: Common practice in the statistical comparison of imaging instruments with limited reproducibility consists in the separate estimation of the instrument's reliabilities. However, as soon as one of the imaging methods is subject to item-specific bias (which has to be expected in many dentomaxillofacial imaging procedures), this approach will end in severe errors in reliability computation and in corresponding erroneous clinical conclusions. This paper seeks to point out these effects and to illustrate a more appropriate model for the comparison of instrumental reliabilities. Methods: A standard reliability model was adjusted for item-specific bias and illustrated by the comparison…

Osteochondritis of the hallux sesamoid bones.

2007

Osteochondritis of the sesamoid bones is an infrequent condition which may affect both the medial and lateral hallux sesamoids. Those cases refractory to conservative treatment can be satisfactorily solved by carrying out its surgical excision. We present a literature review about its causes, pathophysiology, the diagnostic methods and the treatments options.

An Analysis of Earthquakes Clustering Based on a Second-Order Diagnostic Approach

2009

A diagnostic method for space–time point process is here introduced and applied to seismic data of a fixed area of Japan. Nonparametric methods are used to estimate the intensity function of a particular space–time point process and on the basis of the proposed diagnostic method, second-order features of data are analyzed: this approach seems to be useful to interpret space–time variations of the observed seismic activity and to focus on its clustering features.

Objective, Noninvasive Evaluation of Velopharyngeal Function in Cleft and Noncleft Patients

1998

Objective The purpose of this study was to investigate a new diagnostic method that provides an approach to noninvasive, objective measurement of velopharyngeal movement by acoustic determination of epipharyngeal volume changes with velopharyngeal muscle function. Design This was a case control study, using consecutive samples. Setting This study took place at the Cleft Palate Rehabilitation Center of the University of Mainz, Germany. Patients Subjects were 29 consecutive cleft lip and palate (CLP) patients and 31 controls (21 patients with dysgnathia and 10 healthy volunteers). Intervention A series of transnasal acoustic measurements (pressure wave: 55 dB for 2 milliseconds) of epipharyng…
