GRASP with exterior path-relinking and restricted local search for the multidimensional two-way number partitioning problem

2017

In this work, we tackle multidimensional two-way number partitioning (MDTWNP) problem by combining GRASP with Exterior Path Relinking. In the last few years, the combination of GRASP with path relinking (PR) has emerged as a highly effective tool for finding high-quality solutions for several difficult problems in reasonable computational time. However, in most of the cases, this hybridisation is limited to the variant known as interior PR. Here, we couple GRASP with the "exterior form" of path relinking and perform extensive experimentation to evaluate this variant. In addition, we enhance our GRASP with PR method with a novel local search method specially designed for the MDTWNP problem. …

The Development of Novel Approaches to the Identification of Chemical and Protein Respiratory Allergens

2008

In October 2006, the European Centre for theValidation of Alternative Methods (ECVAM) spon-sored and hosted a three-day workshop to consideropportunities and challenges in the development ofalternative methods for the identification and char-acterisation of chemical respiratory allergens. Theproceedings, conclusions and recommendations ofthat workshop were subsequently made available asECVAM Workshop Report 60 (1).In April 2008, a second meeting was convenedby ECVAM to consider what progress has beenmade in the light of the recommendations derivedfrom the 2006 Workshop and the publishedreport. This meeting had as a second objective —to consider whether new opportunities for theidentificatio…

Optical measurements of ground-state properties of short-lived nuclei in resonance cells

1985

Hyperfine structure and isotope shift of radioactive Hg, Au and Cd isotopes have been determined by optical spectroscopy. In all cases the atoms were confined in a resonance cell. The various variants of the cell technique and alternative methods as the resonance ionization spectroscopy related to the investigation of short-lived nuclei are described, and some results are discussed.

Gender and potential wage in Europe: a stochastic frontier approach

2011

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to provide evidence concerning wage differentials and the existence of gender pay discrimination in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.Design/methodology/approachThe authors used the stochastic frontier approach as an alternative method to measure the relevance of gender discrimination. This methodology allows them to explain the differences between the potential and the observed wage that an individual could obtain, given his or her human capital endowment.FindingsThe authors found support for wage discrimination against women. The results show that a significant part of the gender wage gap in all the countries analysed is not attributa…

Top-quark mass measurements at the LHC: alternative methods

2016

Alternative top quark mass determinations can provide inputs to the world average with orthogonal systematic uncertainties and may help to refine the interpretation of the standard method. Among a number of recent results I focus on the extractions by ATLAS and CMS of the top quark pole mass from the top quark pair and tt + 1 jet production cross-section, which have now reached a precision of 1%. Quantitative Vibrational Spectrometry in the 21st Century: A Scientometric Evaluation

2005

Abstract The state of the art of research on vibrational spectrometry–based quantitative methodologies was evaluated from the literature compiled in Analytical Abstracts from 1980. Medium and near infrared, Raman spectrometry, and photoacoustic methods of analysis were considered. The evolution of the number of published papers, the distribution of the literature as a function of the different application fields in which the vibrational methods were employed, and a study of the impact on this area of chemometric and automation studies clearly shows that, from the 1990s until now, the importance of vibrational spectrometry in application analysis has grown to reach maturity. This field provi…

Adopting magnetocaloric heat pumping and refrigeration for electrical vehicle

2017

International audience; Refrigeration process is based on conventional gas compression and expansion techniques. However, this technique has numerous disadvantages since it generates greenhouse gas and is partly responsible for global warming. This paper exposes analternative method: magnetocaloric refrigeration that presents the advantage to combine high-energy efficiency and respect of theenvironment. Magnetic heat pumping and cooling is compared to conventional method applied on vehicle air conditioning system.Simulation results are used to demonstrate the approach.

Efficient Addition of Acid Enediolates to Epoxides

2004

We report new conditions to facilitate the addition of dianions of carboxylic acids to epoxides as an alternative method to the use of aluminum enolates. These conditions require the use of a sub-stoichiometric (10%) amount of amine for dianion generation and the previous activation of the epoxide with LiCl. Other Lewis acids have been shown to be less effective. Yields are good but only low diastereoselectivity is attained, which has not been controlled despite attempts at optimization. Detection of Cancer Stem Cells Using AC133 Antibody

2012

The cancer stem cell (CSC) model postulates that tumors are formed and maintained by a small population of undifferentiated cells, characterized by unique self-renewal properties and malignant potential. As CSCs survive chemotherapy inducing tumor recurrence, the specific targeting and eradication of these cells represents an important therapeutic challenge in cancer cure. Recent findings on CD133, a pentaspan transmembrane glycoprotein, discuss its application in the identification and isolation of SCs from cancerous tissues. However, the appropriateness of this protein constitutes an ongoing discussion. The expression pattern is debated and several issues highlight the need for additional…

Erythrocytes labeled with [18F]SFB as an alternative to radioactive CO for quantification of blood volume with PET

2013

Inhaled radioactive CO is currently the tracer of choice for blood volume quantification by positron emission tomography (PET). This measurement is of great interest for several clinical and research applications. However, owing to the short half-life of the radiolabeled CO, it can only be used in centers equipped with a cyclotron. In the present work, we propose an alternative method to label the red blood cells with [(18) F] in order to obtain blood volume measurements by PET. The use of the radioactive synthon [(18) F] N-succinimidyl 4-[(18) F]fluorobenzoate ([(18) F]SFB) was evaluated for erythrocyte labeling and PET blood volume imaging. The images provided by [(18) F]SFB labeled eryth…
