Electron microscopic investigations of innervation of the mesenteric lymphatic vessels ofCavia porcellus demonstrate that, besides membrane contacts between Axon and smooth muscle cell, a local direct plasmatic connection from the nature of synapses between the nerve and the effector cell have to be considered. From this study it has been concluded that also this neuromuscular junction is a transitoric structure and not a static connection comparable to the synapses in the motor end-plate of the striated muscle.

By electron microscopic examination of a solid, chiefly scirrhous mammary cancer, 3 kinds of unusual nuclear inclusions were found: (a) Electron dense particles of a 54–80 nm diameter, whose outlines appear mainly hexagonal, which points at an icosahedral structure, (b) Clusters of granules with a diameter of 200–300a, respectively 300–400a, at whose circumference the larger particles appear, (c) Bundles of filaments in close association and continuous with the granules. In all 3 nuclear inclusions there are subunits of 40–45a. Two New Retigerane-Type Sesterterpenoids from the Lichen Leprocaulon microscopicum

International audience; Two new sesterterpenes, 1 and 2, have been isolated from the lichen Leprocaulon microscopicum. In addition to classic chromatographic methods, a liquid-liquid chromatography technique, namely centrifugal partition chromatography (CPC) was applied for the purification of compound 2. The structures were determined by analyses of mass spectrometry and 1D- and 2D-NMR data. The relative configuration of the isolated compounds was assigned on the basis of 2D-NOESY experiments. The two compounds possess a rare pentacyclic carbon skeleton typical for lichen metabolism, and quite unusual in the vegetal kingdom.

A preparation method is described by means of which it is possible to transfer individual molecules of a high molecular weight polymer on a support, in order to determine their mass and therefrom their molecular weight distribution, using our previously published electron microscopic method. The advantages of the new procedure as compared to the previously described freeze-drying are 1 that the range of solvents, which can be used is much larger, and 2 that the preparation is performed by evaporation from a dilute solution, which means that the molecules are distributed statistically on the support.
