Abstract ZnO micro and nanostructures in the form of tripods, grains, arrows and wires have been grown at temperatures as low as 500–300 ∘ C by a vapour transport method without catalysis and using a well selected value of the carrier gas flow. A transition state between grains and nanowires is reported being characterized by arrow-like structures which are constituted by a pyramidal head and a tail that is growing from the basal plane of the head. Structure and thermal properties of a chitosan coated polyethylene bilayer film

The thermal and the structural properties of chitosan coated polyethylene (PE) films were studied. The coating process did not significantly influence the thermal stability and the PE surface structure and/or composition of the polyolefin. Dehydration temperature of chitosan films reflected the strength of water/acetic acid/chitosan chains interactions. Glycerol, used as a plasticizer, formed new hydrophilic centres in the film matrix. Moreover it was better integrated in the CSEGLY than in CSAGLY network. Besides, the addition of a plasticizer in the chitosan films decreased the film degradation temperature. Here, an unidentified type of micropillar growth is described at room temperature during conventional direct-current magnetron sputtering (DC-MS) deposition from a Li4Ti5O12+graphite sputter target under negative substrate bias and high operating pressure. These fabricated carbon-Li2O-TiO2 microstructures consisting of various Li4Ti5O12/Li2TiO3/LixTiO2 crystalline phases are demonstrated as an anode material in Li-ion microbatteries. Imaging techniques give a fundamental support to medical diagnostics during the pathology discovery as well as for the characterization of bio-medical structures. The imaging methods involve electromagnetic waves in a frequency range that spans from some Hz to GHz and over. Most of these methods involve ionizing waves and scanning of a large human body area even if only a focused inspection is needed. Surface, mechanical and barrier properties of bio-based composite films based on chitosan and whey protein

Mono-component and composite bilayer and blend films composed of chitosan and whey protein were made. Colour, microstructure, water contact angles, swelling, water vapour sorption, barrier properties (oxygen, water vapour), water vapour diffusion coefficients and mechanical properties were determined. The influence of water vapour on barrier properties was studied in relation to the surface and structural properties. Mono-component and bilayer films were transparent with a homogeneous surface. Congestion management rules and trading strategies in the Spanish electricity market

Abstract This paper analyses the economic incentives embodied in the rules governing the resolution of transmission constraints in the Spanish wholesale electricity market and the way these incentives may have influenced on the trading behaviour of both the generators and the demand side. The evidence obtained is consistent with them responding to these incentives. In particular, buyers would respond to the way congestion costs are billed to them by abandoning the daily market in favour of the intraday market as far as possible. Abstract The impact of small amounts of organomodified clay (OMMT) on the photo-degradation behaviour of two blends obtained by mixing either low-density polyethylene (LDPE) or high density polyethylene (HDPE) with polyamide 6 (PA6) (LDPE/PA6 and HDPE/PA6 75/25 wt-%) was studied. The complex photo-degradation behaviour was followed by monitoring the main physical–mechanical properties of the blends. Construction of two large-size four-plane micromegas detectors

We report on the construction and initial performance studies of two micromegas detector quadruplets with an area of 0.5 m$^2$. They serve as prototypes for the planned upgrade project of the ATLAS muon system. Their design is based on the resistive-strip technology and thus renders the detectors spark tolerant. Each quadruplet comprises four detection layers with 1024 readout strips and a strip pitch of 415 $\mu$m. In two out of the four layers the strips are inclined by $\pm$1.5$^{\circ}$ to allow for the measurement of a second coordinate.
