G.F.R. measuring with 99mTc-DTPA: limits in obstructive acute renal failure.

1991

After a short introduction on the advantages and limits of G.F.R. determination with Ccr, the radioisotopic methods proposed by Schlegel and Gates for this parameter are described, and as well as ERPF and FF, without blood serial samples being necessary. In a severe renal failure case due to obstruction, the Authors have found a great mismatch in the results between the traditional methods and the radioisotopic ones. After the clinical case description, a possible explanation of this discrepancy is proposed: Schlegel and Gates' methods, which well correlate Ccr in chronic renal failure cases, in severe renal failure on obstructive basis, of recent onset, could not indicate the effective glo…

Cholesteatoma associated with Kabuki syndrome

2007

Kabuki syndrome (KS), also identified as Kabuki make-up syndrome or Niikawa-Kuroki syndrome, is a multiple malformation/mental retardation syndrome that was described initially in Japan but is now known to occur in many other ethnic groups. The syndrome is characterized by varying degrees of mental retardation, postnatal growth retardation, distinct facial characteristics resembling the Kabuki actor's make-up, cleft or high-arched palate, brachydactyly, scoliosis, and persistence of finger pads. There is no definitive laboratory diagnostic test for KS, thus diagnosis is based on phenotypic presentation and the exclusion of other known syndromes. Familial cases have been reported and autosom…

Otite media atelettasica, adesiva, timpanosclerotica: update medico e chirurgico

2011

Otitis media secretive is one of the most common ear diseases characterized by frequent sequelae and complications; in particular the authors describe middle ear atelectasis with pocket retraction of tympanic membrane, pocket retraction limited to pars tensa or to pars flaccida, adhesive otitis media, partial or total myringosclerosis and tympanosclerosis. For each disease the Authors comment the best surgical approaches to preserve and restore conductive hearing loss. As for middle ear atelectasis, adhesive otitis media, myringosclerosis and partial tympanosclerosis it was evidenced a significant hearing gain while in total tympanosclerosis there was an initial hearing improvement in a sho…

Two Patients With History of STEC-HUS, Posttransplant Recurrence and Complement Gene Mutations

2013

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a disease of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia and acute renal failure. About 90% of cases are secondary to infections by Escherichia coli strains producing Shiga-like toxins (STEC-HUS), while 10% are associated with mutations in genes encoding proteins of complement system (aHUS). We describe two patients with a clinical history of STEC-HUS, who developed end-stage renal disease (ESRD) soon after disease onset. They received a kidney transplant but lost the graft for HUS recurrence, a complication more commonly observed in aHUS. Before planning a second renal transplantation, the two patients underwent genetic screening for aHUS-associat…

L'effetto Caspe in Sicilia (1412-1415)

2013

Incidence of DAA failure and the clinical impact of retreatment in real-life patients treated in the advanced stage of liver disease: Interim evaluat…

2017

Background: Few data are available on the virological and clinical outcomes of advanced liver disease patients retreated after first-line DAA failure. Aim: To evaluate DAA failure incidence and the retreatment clinical impact in patients treated in the advanced liver disease stage. Methods: Data on HCV genotype, liver disease severity, and first and second line DAA regimens were prospectively collected in consecutive patients who reached the 12-week post-treatment and retreatment evaluations from January 2015 to December 2016 in 23 of the PITER network centers. Results: Among 3,830 patients with advanced fibrosis (F3) or cirrhosis, 139 (3.6%) failed to achieve SVR. Genotype 3, bilirubin lev…

Sleep disorders in menopause: Results from an Italian multicentric study

2016

Menopause in the female life cycle is a special period due to important hormonal, physical and psychological changes. Sleep disruption represents a common complaint for midlife and menopausal women, related to primary sleep disorders, including insomnia, sleep disordered breathing, restless legs syndrome (RLS), mood and anxiety disorder, other medical illness, hormonal-related vasomotor symptoms, and aging per se. Aims of our study were to evaluate the prevalence of sleep disorders in a sample of pre and post menopausal women, and to investigate the relationship between sleep and other medical disorders, and life habits. Among workers in the six participant centers, we enrolled 334 women, a…
