The routes of Southern Italy university students: an explorative analysis
2022
The neoclassical migration approach postulates that different conditions in labour markets among territories are the driving forces behind migration. On the other hand, exponents of the new economics of migration argue that the decision to move is not made at the individual level. Considering migration as the result of a decision taken within a social network helps to explain the so-called chain migration. In this paper, we pay attention to the migratory chain of university students. This work introduces a statistical technique to “classify” migratory chains of students living in Sicily, Sardinia or Apulia, and enrolled in some centre-north regions from 2008 to 2017.
Student mobility: A systemic approach to preferential patterns in higher education
2022
The thesis is a collection of three essays with a “fil rouge”, namely the study of Italian student mobility, 2008 to 2017, analyzed systemically. The main objective of the thesis is to develop statistical methods suitable to identifying preferential mobility patterns starting from the micro-data of a mobility network and applying these methods to reveal preferential patterns of mobility among Italian students with a particular focus on students from Sicily. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that chain migration, within the framework of a network analysis, has been applied to the study of Italian student mobility. In each of the three chapters, there are data analysis tool…

Models and innovative practices for welcoming and safeguarding unaccompanied migrant minors
2020
The number of unaccompanied minors (Uams) arriving in Italy, and in all parts of Europe, has been rising significantly in the last few years, and constitutes a particular phenomenon that has demanded considerable re-organization of the welcoming system and, more generally, the welfare system. The organization of a dedicated welcoming system was established over a certain period of time, through an approach of adaptation and experimentation. The first interventions were characterized by a continuous state of emergency, which prevented effective activation of programmed action. This critical situation still exists in certain Regions up to the present day. Despite the recent development of a n…
Migrations in Tanzania between the XIX and XX centuries: Social aspects and characteristics
2001
The salient features of Tanzanian migration are depicted through an overview of the national history. It appears that there are major differences, also in comparison with other developing countries. There are little migratory flows towards the Western world; however, internal displacement is a prominent phenomenon, as a consequence of internal political turmoil in the country. Besides the specificity of each historical periods (colonialist and socialist rule; opening to the market economy), there appears to be some common aspects regarding Tanzanian migration: the phenomenon appears to be mainly an internal forced displacement, either imposed by the Government or by the need to survive in t…

Between militantism and academic research: rethinking hospitality and solidarity in the context of the EU’s political crisis
In the current context of the so-called migration crisis, it is essential to recall that the crisis per se is much more a political crisis than it is a disequilibrium in migration movements. Though Europe has seen an increase in the arrival of migrants, and especially of asylum seekers, the last year has actually been characterized by a drastic reduction of arrivals. The fortress Europe has indeed tightened its grip, by over-controlling and militarizing European borders and the Mediterranean Sea. The growing tendency of European national governments to reach out to far-right and populist movements that have as a main political line the control of immigration, makes it necessary to build cit…
Catalani nel Val Demone tra Trecento e Quattrocento. Spazi, ruoli, interazioni
2015
The welfare of immigrants: Resilience and sense of community
2021
The accessibility to national health services by immigrants residing in our country has produced a widespread improve- ment of health indicators and health prevention for the entire population. In particular, the role of resilience and sense of community as protective factors against the risk of developing negative welfare outcomes, including life satisfaction and the perception of general health (physical and mental), were considered as indicators. The following self- report questionnaires were sent to a sample of 354 immi- grants, stratified by …
A Universal Health Care System? Unmet Need for Medical Care Among Regular and Irregular Immigrants in Italy
2017
Italy has a universal health care system that covers, in principle, the whole resident population, irrespective of citizenship and legal status. This study calculates the prevalence of unmet need for medical care among Italian citizens, regular and irregular immigrants and estimates logistic regression models to assess whether differences by citizenship and legal status hold true once adjusting for potential confounders. The analysis is based on two Surveys on Income and Living Conditions of Italian households and households with foreigners. Controlling for various factors, the odds of experiencing unmet need for medical care are 27% higher for regular immigrants than for Italian citizens a…
