Thermodynamic Interaction Parameters for the System Water/NMMO Hydrate

Vapor pressures of water were measured for aqueous solutions of N-methyl-morpholine N-oxide (NMMO) at 80, 90 and 100 degrees C. The Flory-Huggins interaction parameters, chi, calculated from these data as a function of phi, the volume fraction of NMMO, are negative at all concentrations; at low phi, they decrease by more than a factor of 2 as T is raised, whereas they remain almost unchanged as phi approaches unity. Accordingly, the heat of mixing is pronouncedly endothermal at low NMMO concentrations but close to athermal at low water content. Enthalpies of mixing of some nitriles aqueous solutions with dodecylsurfactants micellar solutions

The enthalpies of mixing of some n-nitriles (from acetonitrile to valeronitrile) aqueous solutions with dodecyltzimethylammonium bromide, sodium dodecylsulfate and dodecyltzimethylammonium oxide micellar solutions were determined. The measurements were performed by systematically changing the surfactant concentration at a given solute concentration. The experimental enthalpies were rationalized in terms of the standard enthalpy of transfer of solute from the aqueous to the micellar phase and of the distribution constant between the two phase. Black carbon (BC) aerosols influence the Earth's atmosphere and climate, but their microphysical properties, spatiotemporal distribution, and long-range transport are not well constrained. This study presents airborne observations of the transatlantic transport of BC-rich African biomass burning (BB) smoke into the Amazon Basin using a Single Particle Soot Photometer (SP2) as well as several complementary techniques. We base our results on observations of aerosols and trace gases off the Brazilian coast onboard the HALO (High Altitude and LOng range) research aircraft during the ACRIDICON-CHUVA campaign in September 2014. The Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM) was conducted in May and June 2006 in Tinfou, Morocco. A H-TDMA system and a H-DMA-APS system were used to obtain hygroscopic properties of mineral dust particles at 85% RH. Dynamic shape factors of 1.11, 1.19 and 1.25 were determined for the volume equivalent diameters 720, 840 and 960 nm, respectively. During a dust event, the hydrophobic number fraction of 250 and 350 nm particles increased significantly from 30 and 65% to 53 and 75%, respectively, indicating that mineral dust particles can be as small as 200 nm in diameter. High-order harmonic generation via bound-bound transitions in an elliptically polarized laser field

We use a simplified five-level system to investigate the high-order harmonic generation (HHG) spectrum emitted by an atom driven by a linearly or elliptically polarized laser field. For this model, the Schrödinger equation is exactly analytically reduced to the system of ordinary differential equations, which is solved numerically. Studying the intensity and polarization of the emitted radiation, we find that under high laser ellipticity the harmonic emission is suppressed. However, the harmonic intensity typically depends nonmonotonously on the laser ellipticity. Such anomalous behavior is very pronounced for the resonant harmonic. Thin Film Characterisation Using MeV Ion Beams

This chapter focuses on the characterisation of very thin films having thicknesses from a few nanometres to tens of nanometres. The driving force for the ion beam analysis community has mostly been the rapid development of microelectronics — all the elements in new thin SiO2 replacing dielectrics, diffusion barriers, and silicide contacts need to be analysed with a depth resolution even better than a nanometre. This together with new film deposition techniques like atomic layer deposition (ALD) [1] have given a push to the ion beam analysis community to develop new and better techniques using energetic (>0.5 MeV) ion beams.

New physics in $B$ meson mixing: future sensitivity and limitations

The mixing of neutral mesons is sensitive to some of the highest scales probed in laboratory experiments. In light of the planned LHCb Upgrade II, a possible upgrade of Belle II, and the broad interest in flavor physics in the tera-Z phase of the proposed FCC-ee program, we study constraints on new physics contributions to Bd and Bs mixings which can be obtained in these benchmark scenarios. We explore the limitations of this program, and identify the measurement of |Vcb| as one of the key ingredients in which progress beyond current expectations is necessary to maximize future sensitivity.
