Path integral Monte Carlo study of the internal quantum state dynamics of a generic model fluid

1996

We study the quantum dynamics of a generic model fluid with internal quantum states and classical translational degrees of freedom in two spatial dimensions. The path integral Monte Carlo data for the imaginary time correlation functions are presented and analyzed by the maximum entropy method. A comparison of the frequency distribution with those of a mean field approximation and virial expansion shows good agreement at high and low densities, respectively. \textcopyright{} 1996 The American Physical Society.

Molecular-Level Characterization of Heterogeneous Catalytic Systems by Algorithmic Time Dependent Monte Carlo

2009

Monte Carlo algorithms and codes, used to study heterogeneous catalytic systems in the frame of the computational section of the NANOCAT project, are presented along with some exemplifying applications and results. In particular, time dependent Monte Carlo methods supported by high level quantum chemical information employed in the field of heterogeneous catalysis are focused. Technical details of the present algorithmic Monte Carlo development as well as possible evolution aimed at a deeper interrelationship of quantum and stochastic methods are discussed, pointing to two different aspects: the thermal-effect involvement and the three-dimensional catalytic matrix simulation. As topical app…

New relations between professional and work’s organizations introduced by computer applications, special vessel case study

2019

At present time the project of a naval vehicle, where with the word project we refer to all the process of design and manufacturing, especially when the vehicle offers special formal and performance characteristics, involves a number of operators that has been increasing considerably in recent decades, and this increased complexity can be correlated with dimensional and typological growth of many categories of ships. Simultaneously we are witnessing a complete new project approach, where the possibility given by the computer contribution to represent processes and results becomes crucial. The paper aims to investigate the consequences of this progress in the organization of the project and …

Parameter Uncertainty in Shallow Rainfall-triggered Landslide Modeling at Basin Scale: A Probabilistic Approach

2014

Abstract This study proposes a methodology to account for the uncertainty of hydrological and mechanical parameters in coupled distributed hydrological-stability models for shallow landslide assessment. A probabilistic approach was implemented in an existing eco-hydrological and landslide model by randomizing soil cohesion, friction angle and soil retention parameters. The model estimates the probability of failure through an assumed theoretical Factor of Safety (FS) distribution, conditioned on soil moisture content. The time-dependent and spatially distributed FS statistics are approximated by the First Order Second Moment (FOSM) method. The model was applied to the Rio Mameyes Basin, loc…

Impacts of soil moisture content on simulated mesoscale circulations during the summer over eastern Spain

2015

Abstract The Regional Atmospheric Modeling System (RAMS) version 6.0 has been used to investigate the impact and influence of initial soil moisture distributions on mesoscale circulations. To do this, two different events have been selected from the 2011 summer season: one at the beginning of the season (June) and the other one at the end of the season (August). For each of these mesoscale frameworks a total of five distinct simulations were performed varying the initial soil moisture content: a control run and four additional sensitivity tests. The control run, corresponding to a low soil moisture content, is the one used within the real-time weather forecasting system implemented in the V…

Towards the development of a biogeochemical model for addressing the eutrophication problems in the shallow hypertrophic lagoon of Albufera de Valenc…

2015

Abstract Our study presents a biogeochemical model that aims to reproduce the ecological processes shaping phytoplankton dynamics in the shallow hypertrophic lagoon of Albufera de Valencia (Spain). The model simulates two elemental cycles (N and P), two phytoplankton groups (cyanobacteria and non-cyanobacteria), and heterotrophic bacteria. First, we examine the capacity to reproduce the observed plankton patterns, while accommodating the uncertainty related to the external forcing factors of our model (hydraulic and nutrient loading, zooplankton grazing). Sensitivity analysis is also performed to identify the most influential parameters and therefore to shed light on the knowledge needed to…

Is land-use change a cause of loss of pedodiversity? The case of the Mazzarrone study area, Sicily

2011

Anthropogenic soils created ex novo by land-us e change in large scale farming are, from a pedogenetic point of view, catastrophic events that bring the soils to time zero and change the natural pattern of the soilscape, remarkably, in some cases. The qu antitative aspects of pedodiversity of a soilsc ape in South-East Sicily, where some types of soils, in recent decades, have suffered a consistent reduction due to the transformations by large scale farming, are considered. The evolution of pedodiversity over a 53-year period (1955 to 2008 ) is examined using a dedicated statistical method and a space – time model based on Markov analysis and cellular autom ata in order to predict the evolu…

Simulation of the operation of detention tanks.

2005

The performance of detention tanks with different characteristics (volume, on-line and off-line arrangement) has been evaluated according to the results of a continuous simulation. The conceptual simplified model for sewer system simulation (COSMOSS) model has been used to simulate the operation of the tanks. The differences between the performance of on-line and off-line tanks and the influence of the characteristics of different catchments have been examined. According to the results of the simulations detention tanks demonstrated good performances in total suspended solids retention and this evenience can certainly help to prevent water pollution of receiving water bodies in urban areas,…

Atmospheric pollution in Venice, Italy, as indicated by isotopic analyses

1978

Rainwater samples collected in Venice over a period of about 1 yr were studied along with stone samples collected from buildings and monuments. Isotopic measurements of O, S, and C were carried out on rainwater, rainwater dissolved sulfate, carbonate in stone, and sulfate present in altered limestone, with the purpose of proving that atmospheric pollution is mainly responsible for the deterioration of monuments and buildings. The results obtained lead to the conclusion that, in spite of the geographic position of the city, atmospheric sulfate in Venice is basically tied to the emission of anthropogenic SO2 and that only minor contribution can be expected from seawater spray and aerosols. Th…
