Differential up-regulation of circulating soluble selectins and endothelial adhesion molecules in Sicilian patients with Boutonneuse fever

1999

SUMMARYIn 150 patients with Boutonneuse fever (BF), caused by Rickettsia conorii, we studied the plasma levels of soluble l-selectin (s l-selectin), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (sVCAM-1), intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and E-selectin (sE-selectin) in various phases of disease to clarify their role in disease evolution. Results indicate that during the acute phase of BF there is a significant increase in the serum levels of s l-selectin, sE-selectin, sVCAM-1 and sICAM-1. s l-selectin and sVCAM-1 returned to normal levels in the third week of disease, whereas sE-selectin and sICAM-1 persisted at significantly high levels even after the third week. The secretion of these sol…

Epoch versus impulse models in the analysis of parametric fMRI studies

2013

Abstract Objective In parametric fMRI studies the relationship between the amplitude of the hemodynamic response and electrophysiological or behavioral parameters is commonly analyzed using the general linear model (GLM). We examined ways of using single-trial response time (RT) in the analysis of a decision-making task to better isolate task-specific activation. Methods fMRI and RT data were recorded in twenty-one subjects performing a visual-oddball-task. Four explanatory variables (EVs) were generated for the GLM-analysis: A conventional (constant impulse) EV, a constant epoch EV informed using subjects’ average RT, a variable impulse EV and a variable epoch EV both informed using single…

Impulsiveness and venturesomeness in German smokers.

2011

Introduction Cigarette smoking is a behavior, which is influenced by genetic, demographic, and psychological factors. A large body of research has examined the association of cigarette smoking variables with individual differences in personality traits. The aim of the current study was to replicate the findings of higher self-reported impulsivity in smokers compared with never-smokers in a German sample using Eysenck´s construct of impulsivity. Furthermore, it was intended to further the knowledge about associations between different self-reported impulsivity components and different smoking variables. Methods We used the Impulsiveness-Venturesomeness-Empathy questionnaire (I7) to measure s…

Luspatercept for the treatment of anaemia in patients with lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes (PACE-MDS): a multicentre, open-label phase 2 dose-fi…

2017

Myelodysplastic syndromes are characterised by ineffective erythropoiesis. Luspatercept (ACE-536) is a novel fusion protein that blocks transforming growth factor beta (TGF β) superfamily inhibitors of erythropoiesis, giving rise to a promising new investigative therapy. We aimed to assess the safety and efficacy of luspatercept in patients with anaemia due to lower-risk myelodysplastic syndromes. In this phase 2, multicentre, open-label, dose-finding study (PACE-MDS), with long-term extension, eligible patients were aged 18 years or older, had International Prognostic Scoring System-defined low or intermediate 1 risk myelodysplastic syndromes or non-proliferative chronic myelomonocytic leuk…

Effect of sperm DNA fragmentation on pregnancy outcome depends on oocyte quality

2010

Objective To quantify the effect of sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF) on reproductive outcome by evaluating the most statistically significant bias factors using logistic regression. Design Prospective blind observational cohort study. Setting University affiliated private IVF unit. Patient(s) Two hundred ten male partners of couples undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) or first intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) cycles with fresh or thawed sperm with the women's own or donated oocytes. Intervention(s) None. Main Outcome Measure(s) SDF determined before and after swim-up (n = 420), odds ratio calculated of the effect of an increase of one unit of SDF on pregnancy, and stratified regress…

Instantaneous transfer entropy for the study of cardio-respiratory dynamics

2015

Measures of transfer entropy have been proposed to quantify the directional coupling and strength between two complex physiological variables. Particular attention has been given to nonlinear interactions within cardiovascular and respiratory dynamics as influenced by the autonomic nervous system. However, standard transfer entropy estimates have shown major limitations in dealing with issues concerning stochastic system modeling, limited observations in time, and the assumption of stationarity of the considered physiological variables. Moreover, standard estimates are unable to track time-varying changes in nonlinear coupling with high resolution in time. Here, we propose a novel definitio…

Optimized threshold for serum HCV RNA to predict treatment outcomes in hepatitis C patients receiving peginterferon alfa-2a/ribavirin

2012

It is unclear whether the current threshold for 'high' hepatitis C virus (HCV) RNA level (800,000 IU/mL) is optimal for predicting sustained virological response (SVR). We retrospectively analysed pretreatment HCV RNA levels and SVR rates in 1529 mono-infected and 176 HIV-HCV co-infected patients treated with peginterferon alfa-2a (40 kD) plus ribavirin. We improved the threshold for differentiating low and high viral load by fitting semiparametric generalized additive logistic regression models to the data and constructing receiver operating characteristics curves. Among HCV genotype 1 mono-infected patients, the difference in SVR rates between those with low and high baseline HCV RNA leve…

Replication of interleukin 23 receptor and autophagy-related 16-like 1 association in adult- and pediatric-onset inflammatory bowel disease in Italy.

2008

AIM: To investigate gene variants in a large Italian inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) cohort, and to analyze the correlation of sub-phenotypes (including age at diagnosis) and epistatic interaction with other IBD genes. METHODS: Total of 763 patients with Crohn's disease (CD, 189 diagnosed at age < 19 years), 843 with ulcerative colitis (UC, 179 diagnosed < 19 years), 749 healthy controls, and 546 healthy parents (273 trios) were included in the study. The rs2241880 [autophagy-related 16-like 1 (ATG16L1)], rs11209026 and rs7517847 [interleukin 23 receptor (IL23R)], rs2066844, rs2066845, rs2066847 (CARD15), rs1050152 (OCTN1), and rs2631367 (OCTN2) gene variants were genotyped. RESULTS: The f…

Noninvasive measurement of intracranial pressure: Is it possible?

2007

BACKGROUND: Some publications suggest a strong correlation between the intracranial pressure and the intraocular pressure. Other studies claim no correlation between these two physiologic variables. Our aim was to study whether the tonometry could be a useful method to evaluate intracranial pressure in patients with suspected intracranial abnormality. METHODS: We evaluated the correlation between the intracranial pressure and the intraocular pressure, the intracranial pressure and the mean arterial pressure, and the intraocular pressure and the mean arterial pressure in 22 patients, initially comatose, who were admitted to our hospital. All patients required the intracranial pressure monito…

PREVALENCE AND ASSOCIATIONS OF MYELINATED RETINAL NERVE FIBERS

2016

PURPOSE To determine the prevalence, ocular, and systemic associations of myelinated retinal nerve fibers (MRNF) in a Caucasian cohort. METHODS The Gutenberg Health Study (GHS) is a population-based, prospective cohort study encompassing 15,010 subjects in Germany. Gutenberg Health Study participants, aged 35 to 74 years, stratified for gender, decades of age, and residence were examined for ophthalmologic and systemic conditions. Optic disc centered and macular photographs were reviewed for the presence of MRNF. RESULTS In 25,728 eyes of 12,906 participants (86.0% of the cohort), the prevalence of MRNF was 0.4%. In a binary logistic regression analysis, MRNF was positively associated with …
