Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy of Ferroelectric Phase Transitions in PbSc1/2Nb1/2O3Ordered Ceramics

2008

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy of PbSc 1/2 Nb 1/2 O 3 (PSN) ordered ceramics are reported within the range of 20 Hz ≤ ν ≤ 2 THz in 80 K ≤ T ≤ 300 K temperatures. Spectrally very broad dielectric dispersion consisting of two parts − at lower frequencies, ferroelectric domains cause a dispersion and at higher frequencies, higher temperatures the relaxation soft mode is responsible for the dispersion. The relaxation soft mode exhibit pronounced hardening on cooling, whilst the ferroelectric phase transition is connected with an abrupt freezing and rise of polar nanoregions into ferroelectric domains.

Confinement effects on phase behavior of soft matter systems.

2008

When systems that can undergo phase separation between two coexisting phases in the bulk are confined in thin film geometry between parallel walls, the phase behavior can be profoundly modified. These phenomena shall be described and exemplified by computer simulations of the Asakura-Oosawa model for colloid-polymer mixtures, but applications to other soft matter systems (e.g. confined polymer blends) will also be mentioned. Typically a wall will prefer one of the phases, and hence the composition of the system in the direction perpendicular to the walls will not be homogeneous. If both walls are of the same kind, this effect leads to a distortion of the phase diagram of the system in thin …

LaAg x In1?x

1980

The phonon dispersion of LaAg x In1−x (x=1, 0.89, 0.8) has been studied by inelastic neutron scattering in the cubic high temperature phase. A soft mode behaviour was observed at theM-point. The doubling and the cubic to tetragonal deformation of the elementary cell was observed through the phase transition. The measurements of the elastic constants were extended to 450 K and their magnetic field dependence was investigated.

Properties of dirty two-band superconductors with repulsive interband interaction: Normal modes, length scales, vortices, and magnetic response

2018

Disorder in two-band superconductors with repulsive interband interaction induces a frustrated competition between the phase-locking preferences of the various potential and kinetic terms. This frustrated interaction can result in the formation of an $s+is$ superconducting state, that breaks the time-reversal symmetry. In this paper we study the normal modes and their associated coherence lengths in such materials. We especially focus on the consequences of the soft modes stemming from the frustration and time-reversal-symmetry breakdown. We find that two-bands superconductors with such impurity-induced frustrated interactions display a rich spectrum of physical properties that are absent i…

N/Z effects on evaporation residue emission near fragmentation threshold

2011

We will discuss results concerning the fate of hot nuclear systems populated in 40,48 Ca+ 40,48 Ca reactions at 25 MeV/nucleon. Due to the complexity of events, we used the Chimera 4π device as detection system. By selecting central events of reaction, we found that the interplay between binary-like and evaporation residue emissions is strongly sensitive on the N/Z of the entrance channels. In particular, evaporation residue emission increases at increasing the neutron content of colliding system. By comparing or data with CoMD-II model calculations, we can extract information about the density depend part of Symmetry Potential in the Nuclear Equation of State at near-saturation densities.

Non-Markovian dynamics from band edge effects and static disorder

2017

It was recently shown [S. Lorenzo et al., Sci. Rep. 7, 42729 (2017)] that the presence of static disorder in a bosonic bath - whose normal modes thus become all Anderson-localised - leads to non-Markovianity in the emission of an atom weakly coupled to it (a process which in absence of disorder is fully Markovian). Here, we extend the above analysis beyond the weak-coupling regime for a finite-band bath so as to account for band edge effects. We study the interplay of these with static disorder in the emergence of non-Markovian behaviour in terms of a suitable non-Markovianity measure.

Optomechanical oscillations in microbubble resonators: Enhancement, suppression and chaotic behaviour

2019

We report on the experimental and theoretical analysis of parametrical optomechanical oscillations in hollow spherical PhoXonic whispering gallery mode resonators due to radiation pressure. The optically excited acoustic eigenmodes of the PhoXonic cavity oscillate regeneratively leading to parametric oscillation instabilities.

The quantum paraelectric phase of SrTiO$_3$ from first principles

2021

We demonstrate how the quantum paraelectric ground state of SrTiO$_3$ can be accessed via a microscopic $ab~initio$ approach based on density functional theory. At low temperature the quantum fluctuations are strong enough to stabilize the paraelectric phase even though a classical description would predict a ferroelectric phase. We find that accounting for quantum fluctuations of the lattice and for the strong coupling between the ferroelectric soft mode and lattice elongation is necessary to achieve quantitative agreement with experimental frequency of the ferroelectric soft mode. The temperature dependent properties in SrTiO$_3$ are also well captured by the present microscopic framework.

Effective description of domain wall strings

2017

The analysis of domain wall dynamics is often simplified to one-dimensional physics. For domain walls in thin films, more realistic approaches require the description as two-dimensional objects. This includes the study of vortices and curvatures along the domain walls as well as the influence of boundary effects. Here we provide a theory in terms of soft modes that allows us to analytically study the physics of extended domain walls and their stability. By considering irregularly shaped skyrmions as closed domain walls, we analyze their plasticity and compare their dynamics with those of circular skyrmions. Our theory directly provides an analytical description of the excitation modes of ma…

Fractional mechanical model for the dynamics of non-local continuum

2009

In this chapter, fractional calculus has been used to account for long-range interactions between material particles. Cohesive forces have been assumed decaying with inverse power law of the absolute distance that yields, as limiting case, an ordinary, fractional differential equation. It is shown that the proposed mathematical formulation is related to a discrete, point-spring model that includes non-local interactions by non-adjacent particles with linear springs with distance-decaying stiffness. Boundary conditions associated to the model coalesce with the well-known kinematic and static constraints and they do not run into divergent behavior. Dynamic analysis has been conducted and both…
