Conforming to and resisting imposed identities : An autoethnography on academic motherhood

Purpose This research attempts to make sense of the experiences of two academic women who become mothers. Design/methodology/approach This paper is an autoethnography. Applying the autoethnographic method allows us to discuss cultural phenomena through personal reflections and experiences. Our autoethnographic reflections illustrate our struggles and attempts of resistance within discursive spaces where motherhood and our identity as academics intersect. Findings Our personal experiences combined with theoretical elaborations illuminate how the role of the mother continues to be dominated by such gendered discursive practices that conflict with the work role. Surrogacy relationships: a critical interpretative review

Abstract Based on a critical interpretative review of existing qualitative research investigating accounts of ‘lived experience’ of surrogates and intended parents from a relational perspective, this article proposes a typology of surrogacy arrangements. The review is based on the analysis of 39 articles, which belong to a range of different disciplines (mostly sociology, social psychology, anthropology, ethnology, and gender studies). The number of interviews in each study range from as few as seven to over one hundred. Our initial perspective is that the dynamics of territories and cities/towns that are tourist resorts (or aspire to being one) can be analysed from the point of view of the ‘population’ concept, dear to a certain trend in socio-spatial analysis. Our chapter concentrates particularly on those who, by need or will, pass through places without their own vehicle, but using collective or public transport, as well as walking or cycling, rather than by walker or wheelchair. The topie of my article is solitude of the titled mother in the drama of Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz. The play was organized in Cracow’s The National Old Theatre by a magnificent and, unfortunately, deceased artist - Jerzy Jarocki. It is rare to experience such a piece of art where all human feelings are, in a radical way, mocked and rotten. Witkacy overemphasizes a motif of a widów mother - used by their children. It helped him in reaching a comic effect and ridiculing his characters. The Mother is an unpleasant play. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest przedstawienie i omówienie wybranych technik, za pomocą których można z powodzeniem kształcić umiejętność słuchania na lekcjach L1. Autorka jako pierwsze omawia techniki, o których w latach 90. pisali lingwodydaktycy – Tadeusz Patrzałek i Maria Nagajowa, następnie prezentuje wybrane techniki glottodydaktyczne, które, po ich dostosowaniu do specyfiki słuchania w L1, można wykorzystać na lekcjach języka polskiego jako ojczystego. Autorka wychodzi z założenia, że integracja koncepcji lingwo- i glottodydaktycznych może przyczynić się do skutecznego i świadomego kształcenia umiejętności słuchania na lekcjach języka polskiego jako ojczystego.

This article reports on research examining the intensity and forms of partnership between civil society organisations (particularly non-profit non-governmental organisations with a focus on students with a different mother tongue) and schools in three European geographical areas, answering three research questions: (1) What services do non-profits offer for teachers? (2) How do non-profits see the current cooperation? (3) Do teachers know about the existence of non-profits in this area and are they interested in such cooperation? Traces of the past: an interview study with Finnish war children who did not return to Finland after the Second World War

ABSTRACTThis paper is an in-depth qualitative study based on interviews with 10 Finnish children who were evacuated to Sweden during Second World War and who did not return to Finland after the war. The interviewees were asked to tell about their lives. Nine of them were between 2 and 5 years and one was 7 years old at the time of evacuation. The aim was to study how their childhood experiences were reflected in adult memories, how they remembered or did not remember. This paper focuses on the consequences of not knowing about one’s early life and also on whether it is possible to observe signs of the Finnish mother.
