Tausta: Suomessa syntyy vuosittain noin 20 lasta, joilla on vaikea-asteisimpiin sydänvikoihin kuuluva yksikammioinen sydän, hypoplastinen vasemman kammion oireyhtymä (HLHS) tai muu yksikammioinen sydänvika (UVH). Aikaisemmin nämä lapset menehtyivät pian syntymän jälkeen. Suomessa on alettu hoitaa näitä lapsia vuodesta 1995 Norwoodin ym. 1980 kehittämän kolmivaiheisen leikkausmenetelmän avulla, jonka ansiosta suurin osa näistä lapsista jää henkiin. Näiden lasten kokonaiskehitys ja etenkin motorinen kehitys on osoittautunut olevan jäljessä verrattuna terveisiin lapsiin.
