Early attraction in temporally controlled sight reading of music

A music reader has to “look ahead” from the notes currently being played—this has usually been called the Eye-Hand Span. Given the restrictions on processing time due to tempo and meter, the Early Attraction Hypothesis suggests that sight readers are likely to locally increase the span of looking ahead in the face of complex upcoming symbols (or symbol relationships). We argue that such stimulus-driven effects on looking ahead are best studied using a measure of Eye-Time Span (ETS) which redefines looking ahead as the metrical distance between the position of a fixation in the score and another position that corresponds to the point of metrical time at fixation onset. Abstract The paper addresses the various contexts that determine the societal framework for research in the field of sound and music computing. Four of these contexts are identified, namely, the research context, the educational context, the industrial context and the socio-cultural context. For each context, the major trends are analysed and summarized as short statements, thus providing a background in which the state-of-the-art and the challenges of sound and music research can be situated.

Temari balls are traditional Japanese toys and artworks. The variety of their geometries and tessellations can be investigated formally and computationally with the means of combinatorics. As a further step, we also propose a musical application of the core idea of Temari balls. In fact, inspired by the classical idea of music of spheres and by the CubeHarmonic, a musical application of the Rubik’s cube, we present the concept of a new musical instrument, the SphereHarmonic. This paper focuses on the reception of Giacomo Meyerbeer's Le prophète in Italy during the Nineteenth Century. It is divided in two parts: the first deals briefly with general issues about Meyerbeer’s reception in Italy, in order to provide a context to the discussion about Le Prophète. In the second part I’ll begin with some statistics about Le Prophète’s performances in Italy; I’ll go on discussing some relevant performances such as the Italian première in Florence, and the Turin’s and Parma’s productions. I’ll also discuss some examples of Meyerbeer’s criticism in the Italian press.

Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kahden suomalaisen musiikkifestivaalin, Savonlinnan Oopperajuhlien ja Haapavesi Fok Music Festivalin, kohtaamia haasteita 2000-luvulla sekä sitä, miten haasteisiin on reagoitu ja toimintaa sitä kautta kehitetty. Kun festivaalien tarkastelun painopiste on kehittämistoiminnassa ja siihen johtavissa tekijöissä, tarvitaan oppimista sekä oppimiseen ja kehittämiseen suuntautunutta organisaatiota.
