Sing with the Telenoid

2012

We introduce a novel research proposal project aimed to build a robotic setup in which the Telenoid learns to improvise jazz singing in a duet with a human singer. In the proposed application, the Telenoid acts in teleoperated mode during the learning phase, while it becomes more and more autonomous during the working phase. A goal of the research is to investigate the essence of human communication which is based on gestures and prosody. We will employ an architecture for imitation learning that incrementally learns from demonstrations sequences of internal model activations, based on the idea of coupled forward- inverse internal models for representing musical phrases and the body sequenc…

The emergence and the evolution of the obligatory characteristic of cognitive automatisms

2013

The aim of this thesis is to examine the emergence and the evolution of the obligatory characteristic of cognitive automatisms. To achieve this, we devised a new experimental situation called musical Stroop. The basic arrangement comprises a treble staff with a note in various positions. A name of a note is printed inside the note. For the congruent condition, the note name is congruent with the note position on the staff, whereas in the incongruent condition, note name and position are incongruent. We showed that musicians process the incongruent condition slower than the congruent condition (Study 1). This effect, named Musical Stroop Effect (MSE), is generated by the automaticity of note…

When Augmented Reality Met Art: Lessons Learned from Researcher–Artist Interdisciplinary Work

2018

Over the last few years, Augmented Reality (AR) technology has quickly evolved and today there is commercial software and hardware that allow the creation of AR experiences. However, it might still be cumbersome to create rich AR experiences without a deep knowledge of the technology. Artists have collaborated with IT experts during the last few years in order to enhance artistic pieces embedding AR technology, leading to the emergence of interesting collaborations between artists and engineers, computer scientists, architects, etc. The resulting works can be referred as AR Art. However, the interdisciplinary work behind these collaborations is usually not addressed. The aim of this paper i…

U.I.R.D.A. – Unbuilt Italian Rationalism Digital Archive

2018

For twenty years, the architecture of Italian rationalism through the digital modelling has been investigated. Very often, the production of a model and the consequent representation of tridimensional views, in many case studies, as outcome of the research on architecture have been considered. Actually, the digital model, intended as a critical tool, has to be conceived as a ‘starting point' for graphic analysis of architecture and not as the outcome. Indeed, it is associated to other graphics, sometimes not ‘deducted' from the model, useful for the understanding/translation of architecture. The construction of the model is not the construction of a simple image, operation, which is often c…

Rectangle with sides in ratio 2:3. Diatessaron: Harmonic ratio. Rectangle with sides in ratio 3:4. Digital Archive: Cataloging of drawings obtained through the implementation of digital modeling software within a database that collects graphic elaborations acquired from archive drawings. Golden Ratio: Indicates the ratio between the two dimensions of which the major is the mean proportional between the minor and the sum of the two. Graphic Reading: Reading and understanding operation of an architecture through its decomposition into volumetric and geometric parts graphically expressed through an additional language. Harmonic Ratios: Geometric ratios between pure shapes traceable also in music that enable us to understand the spatial logic of drawn architecture. Hermeneutic Analysis: Interpretive approach adopted in the graphic analysis of an architecture drawing leading to the seeking of further key interpretations of the work itself. Redrawing: Graphic restitution of one or more archive drawings obtained by an interpretative practice of the project and expressed through the codes of representation that provide new information on architecture. Volumetric Analysis: Graphic analysis related to spatial logics that exist between the tridimensional elements of architecture read through schemes orthogonal projections and geometric analysis.Settore ICAR/17 - DisegnobusinessClassicsRationalism (international relations)

Collaborative competition is a very useful tool fo…

2015

One of the most outstanding figures of music criticism in the Spanish Restoration was José María Esperanza y Sola (1834-1905), active for thirty years, from the late 1860s until the end of the century. During this period, Esperanza collaborated in different periodical publications and, particularly, “La Ilustración Española y Americana”, from whose pages he informed about the most important musical events celebrated in Madrid, judged according to a conservative aesthetic criterion, opposed to any novelty that infringe the traditional music system. On the basis of Esperanza´s thought, our study analyzes the different subjects that constitute his journalistic production.La crítica musical en …
