LA CRITICA MUSICALE ITALIANA DAVANTI A L’ORFEO: 1909-1935
2021
LI STREPPITI DE’ VENTI… IL BELAR DELLE PECORE, IL NITRIR DE’ CAVALLI». NATURA E PASSIONI IN MONTEVERDI
2018
Monteverdi expresses his idea about the musical imitation of nat…
2021
The present work addresses the principles and properties of the complex thought formulated by the French thinker Edgar Morin and the way in which he was able me to articulate his conception of organizational complexity with one of the most important theories of musical analysis, which emerged at the beginning of the 20th century: the schenkerian analysis. It is a review and extension of a few pages of my doctoral thesis, which are intended to pay tribute to who has been, in addition to my teacher, Honorary President of Itamar since its first issue. His teachings and support has always been the engine for my quest for musical organization. On July 21, 2021, Morin celebrated his 100th birthda…
Morlacchismo, illirismo, involuzioni esotiche.
2014
Alberto Fortis’ Viaggio in Dalmazia (Venice, 1774) described for the first time the Morlacks of the interior of Dalmatia as the true model of a primitive group, whose characteristics became an exotic source of inspiration for some Italian writers and ballet composers until 1830s. Contemporaneously, the Homer’s paradigm was introduced by Melchiorre Cesarotti in the foreword joined to the Italian version of the poems of “Ossian” (1763), and it was in turn transformed by the composer and doctor of Split Giulio Bajamonti. Even though published in Italian, Bajamonti’s Morlacchismo d’Omero (Venice, 1797) can be considered the first contribution to the romantic Croatian literature. The essay of Ba…

Background and objectives Music has a unique capacity to evoke both strong emotions and vivid autobiographical memories. Previous music information retrieval (MIR) studies have shown that the emotional experience of music is influenced by a combination of musical features, including tonal, rhythmic, and loudness features. Here, our aim was to explore the relationship between music-evoked emotions and music-evoked memories and how musical features (derived with MIR) can predict them both. Methods Healthy older adults (N = 113, age ≥ 60 years) participated in a listening task in which they rated a total of 140 song excerpts comprising folk songs and popular songs from 1950s to 1980s on five …
Gestural and audio metaphors as a means of control for mobile devices
2002
This paper discusses the use of gesture and non-speech audio as ways to improve the user interface of a mobile music player. Their key advantages mean that users could use a player without having to look at its controls when on the move. Two very different evaluations of the player took place: one based on a standard usability experiment (comparing the new player to a standard design) and the other a video analysis of the player in use. Both of these showed significant usability improvements for the gesture/audio-based interface over a standard visual/pen-based display. The similarities and differences in the results produced by the two studies are discussed
2015
The article explains the role, the scope and the methods of the 19th-Century music historiography in Italy in comparison to positivism, which fostered a scientific methodology to reshape history of arts and literature. Aiming to discover the value and the ideal place of musical oeuvre, some historiographers described the periodization by means of different paradigms and philosophies, drawn from the theory of evolution of Darwin and Spencer, and the positivism of Hyppolite Taine. Some essays, such as "L’evoluzione nella musica" (1898, 1911 enlarged ed.) and the monograph "Riccardo Wagner" (1890), written by Oscar Chilesotti and Luigi Torchi, are examined at the light of those philosophies. I…

Tempo congelato e musica in 'Sussurri e grida' di Ingmar Bergman
2016
