The work songs of Sicilian gypsum miners have never been documented in ethnographic literature. There were only a few audio recordings made between 1954 and 1988. The text analyzes all available sourc…

2020

In this contribution we shall present some anomalies in the musical notation of the anonymous lyric lais transmitted by French chansonniers M and T (i.e. Kievrefoil, Markiol and Nompar), which share the same source, and to which a recently discovered chansonnier fragment (Bo) can be added. The plural attestation of these heterostrophic texts allows to nuance the strict notion of musical error, advocated by John H. Marshall for this very corpus. Finally, we discuss an interesting case (Nompar, str. X) where musical notation can effectively help the reconstruction of a text corrupted in both witnesses.

Individual Decisions and Perceived Form in Collective Free Improvisation

2015

International audience; This paper proposes a first attempt to study quantitatively Collective Free Improvisation (CFI). We report an experiment designed to study the relationship between the improvisers’ individual high-level decisions and the improvisation’s form perceived by external auditors. We recorded 16 trios in which the improvisers used a MIDI-pedal to indicate in real-time a significant change in their own musical production. Expert listeners were later asked to segment each improvisation so that we obtained their perception of the structure. By analysing the correlations between musicians’ individual decisions and listeners’ segmentation points, we discuss how the improvisation’…

Visualization in comparative music research

2007

Computational analysis of large musical corpora provides an approach that overcomes some of the limitations of manual analysis related to small sample sizes and subjectivity. The present paper aims to provide an overview of the computational approach to music research. It discusses the issues of music representation, musical feature extraction, digital music collections, and data mining techniques. Moreover, it provides examples of visualization of large musical collections.

The soundscape of the ceremonies for the beatification of St Teresa of Ávila in the Crown of Aragon, 1614

2015

[EN] The beatification of Saint Teresa of Ávila in October 1614 gave rise to widespread celebrations in many of the cities and towns of the Iberian Peninsula. Printed relaciones describing these celebrations, despite their limitations —in terms of political agenda, propaganda, rivalry and literary style— can nevertheless provide information about musical experience and can help to recreate the ephemeral soundscapes of these events. This article will focus on the ceremonies held in the Crown of Aragon, especially Saragossa and Barcelona, taking into consideration the typology of different musics —heraldic, divine and festive— and factors such as the moment in time, function, dynamic, urban s…

Triumphus musicae.

Music, Religious Communities, and the Urban Dimension: Sound Experiences in Palermo in the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries

2018

The European Hard Rock and Heavy Metal live music market A closer look at the development of emerging bands through live performing

2015

Masteroppgave Music management- Universitetet i Agder, 2015 The present study is set out to provide a better understanding of the current situation regarding career development in terms of live performing for emerging Hard Rock / Heavy Metal (HR/HM) bands in Europe, and to find out how these bands have been impacted by changes in the live-music economy. Previous research conducted concerning the live music industry mostly consists of overall figures and general turnover over years. Such research is segmented only by country, and mainly focused on the United States, United Kingdom or Europe as a whole. It also focuses on the economies of the so-called “Super Stars”. This particular study pre…
