Self — Assembled System: Semiconductor and Virus Like Particles

2008

Virus like nanoparticles (VLP) are in use to be absorbed by cells to cause biological effects. To increase a local concentration of VLP, nanoparticles-carriers bringing the latter to the target cell could be employed. N-type and p-type Si semiconductor nanoparticles, to control adhesion of VLP were applied. Optical absorbance spectra and electron microscopy evidenced that VLP became connected to Si nanoparticles. Moreover, a density of the adhered VLP depended on the type of both semiconductor and VLP.

Efficient photo-thermal activation of gold nanoparticle-doped polymer plasmonic switches

2012

International audience; We report on the photo-thermal activation of dielectric loaded plasmonic switches comprised of gold nanoparticle-doped polymer deposited onto a gold film. The plasmonic switches rely on a multi-mode interferometer design and are fabricated by electron beam lithography applied to a positive resin doped with gold nanoparticles at a volume ratio of 0.52%. A cross-bar switching is obtained at telecom wavelengths by pumping the devices with a visible beam having a frequency within the localized surface plasmon resonance band of the embedded nanoparticles. By comparing the switching performances of doped and undoped devices, we show that for the modest doping level we cons…

Absorption Properties of Metal–Semiconductor Hybrid Nanoparticles

2011

The optical response of hybrid metal-semiconductor nanoparticles exhibits different behaviors due to the proximity between the disparate materials. For some hybrid systems, such as CdS-Au matchstick-shaped hybrids, the particles essentially retain the optical properties of their original components, with minor changes. Other systems, such as CdSe-Au dumbbell-shaped nanoparticles, exhibit significant change in the optical properties due to strong coupling between the two materials. Here, we study the absorption of these hybrids by comparing experimental results with simulations using the discrete dipole approximation method (DDA) employing dielectric functions of the bare components as input…

Evaluating plasmonic transport in current-carrying silver nanowires

2013

cited By 1; International audience; Plasmonics is an emerging technology capable of simultaneously transporting a plasmonic signal and an electronic signal on the same information support1,2,3. In this context, metal nanowires are especially desirable for realizing dense routing networks4. A prerequisite to operate such shared nanowire-based platform relies on our ability to electrically contact individual metal nanowires and efficiently excite surface plasmon polaritons5 in this information support. In this article, we describe a protocol to bring electrical terminals to chemically-synthesized silver nanowires6 randomly distributed on a glass substrate7. The positions of the nanowire ends …

Birth of the Localized Surface Plasmon Resonance in Monolayer-Protected Gold Nanoclusters

2013

Gold nanoclusters protected by a thiolate monolayer (MPC) are widely studied for their potential applications in site-specific bioconjugate labeling, sensing, drug delivery, and molecular electronics. Several MPCs with 1-2 nm metal cores are currently known to have a well-defined molecular structure, and they serve as an important link between molecularly dispersed gold and colloidal gold to understand the size-dependent electronic and optical properties. Here, we show by using an ab initio method together with atomistic models for experimentally observed thiolate-stabilized gold clusters how collective electronic excitations change when the gold core of the MPC grows from 1.5 to 2.0 nm. A …

Enhanced Efficiency of Organic Solar Cells by Thiol-capped Au-Nanoparticles

2015

In this work, we present a study on the effect of thiol-capped AuNPs of various sizesin an organic solar cell.AuNPs have been obtained by laser ablation in liquid solution[2], have been functionalized both with 2-naphthalenethiol and alkanethiol having different length. In addition to bulk heterojunction structures with optimized interpenetrating network of donors and acceptor domains, we have chosen to study planar heterojunctions (PHJs), consisting of three component thin films realized by sequential deposition of P3HT, AuNPs and PCBM from orthogonal solvents.

Insight into the primary mode of action of TiO2 nanoparticles on Escherichia coli in the dark.

2015

16 pages; International audience; Large-scale production and incorporation of titanium dioxide nanoparticles (NP-TiO2 ) in consumer products leads to their potential release into the environment and raises the question of their toxicity. The bactericidal mechanism of NP-TiO2 under UV light is known to involve oxidative stress due to the generation of reactive oxygen species. In the dark, several studies revealed that NP-TiO2 can exert toxicological effects. However, the mode of action of these nanoparticles is still controversial. In the present study, we used a combination of fluorescent probes to show that NP-TiO2 causes Escherichia coli membrane depolarization and loss of integrity, lead…
