Is avoidance of surgery possible in patients with perimenopausal ovarian tumors using transvaginal ultrasound and duplex color Doppler sonography?
1993
A total of 108 cases of small perimenopausal ovarian tumors (largest diameter, less than 7 cm) were evaluated by transvaginal sonography and duplex color Doppler sonography; 101 had criteria for benignity and 7 for malignancy. All cysts were punctured and aspirated to avoid unnecessary surgery (benign cases) and establish the cytologic diagnosis as well as to avoid the risk of leakage (malignant cases). Recurrence rate of benign punctured cysts was 25% within 1 year of follow up. No difference in recurrent rate was seen between pre- and postmenopausal patients (19 of 56 cases in the premenopausal group, and five of 28 cases in the postmenopausal group). The larger the cyst, the greater the …
Nasal Cellularity in 183 Unselected Schoolchildren Aged 9 to 11 Years
2002
Objective. Although rhinitis is extremely frequent in children, methods for assessing the severity of nasal inflammation produce results with wide variability and hence weak clinical significance. We designed this epidemiologic investigation to define the clinical usefulness of assessing nasal cellularity in children. Methods. We studied 183 of 203 eligible unselected schoolchildren who were aged 9 to 11 years and whose parents gave informed consent and completed a questionnaire on the history of atopic and respiratory symptoms. In all children, nasal swabs were obtained from both nostrils and eluted in saline and slides were prepared from cytospin preparations for staining and white cell c…
Interdisciplinary consensus on the uses and technique of MR-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VAB): results of a European consensus meeting.
2009
Abstract Purpose Quality assurance of MR-guided vacuum-assisted breast biopsy (VAB). Method A consensus was achieved based on the existing literature and experience of an interdisciplinary group comprising European specialists in breast imaging and VAB. Results Full imaging work-up must be completed according to existing standards before an indication for MR-guided VAB is established. The procedure should be reserved for lesions demonstrable by MRI alone. Acquisition of >24 cores (11-Gauge) should be routinely attempted, with the intention of sufficiently removing small lesions for accurate diagnosis. Following biopsy the patient should be re-imaged to demonstrate the biopsy site and its pr…
The use of stereotaxic cytology in the diagnosis of non-palpable breast lesions. Personal experience
1999
Background and aims. The increasingly frequent use of mammography for the early diagnosis of breast cancer and the consequent identification of mammary lesions at a preclinical stage raises the fundamental problem of the differential diagnosis between non-suspected non-palpable lesions (NPL) which can therefore be monitored over time and suspected NPL or definite carcinoma requiring histological confirmation and surgical biopsy. The diagnostic accuracy of mammography alone is not sufficiently high to differentiate benign lesions from malignant or strongly suspected ones. The use of surgical biopsy in the event of suspected NPL could be significantly reduced by the use of stereotaxic cytolog…
Carotid atherosclerosis and chronic hepatitis C: A prospective study of risk associations
2011
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: There are contrasting results in studies of cardiovascular risk in patients with genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C (G1 CHC). We evaluated the prevalence of carotid atherosclerosis compared with a control population in order to assess the potential association between atherosclerosis, host and viral factors, and liver histological features. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred seventy-four consecutive biopsy-proven G1 CHC patients were evaluated by anthropometric and metabolic measurements. One hundred seventy-four patients attending an outpatient cardiology unit were used as controls. Intima-media thickness (IMT) and carotid plaques, defined as focal thickening of > 1.3 mm a…
Accuracy and Safety of Ultrasound-Guided Core Needle Biopsy of Soft Tissue Tumors in an Outpatient Setting: A Sarcoma Center Analysis of 392 Consecut…
2021
Simple Summary In patients with unclear soft tissue lesions, treatment planning largely depends on histology. Core needle biopsy is the diagnostic standard in these cases. The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate accuracy and safety of ultrasound guided core needle biopsy at a tertiary referral center. We show that ultrasound guided biopsy was feasible as a one stop shop procedure in an outpatient setting in 87.6% of the cases. The rate of conclusive biopsies was 88.5%. After surgical resection, the dignity, tumor type and histopathological grading of the biopsy matched one of the resection specimens in 97.2%, 92.7% and 92.5% of the cases, respectively. Major complications occ…
Diagnostic performance of endoscopic ultrasound through‐the‐needle microforceps biopsy of pancreatic cystic lesions: Systematic review with meta‐anal…
2020
Objectives Endoscopic ultrasound through-the-needle biopsy (EUS-TTNB) is a useful tool for differential diagnosis among pancreatic cystic lesions (PCLs). Cystic fluid cytology (CFC) is recommended by guidelines, but its diagnostic accuracy is about 50%. The aim of this meta-analysis is to assess the clinical impact of EUS-TTNB in terms of technical success (TS), histological accuracy (HA) and diagnostic yield (DY). Methods Original studies in English language on EUS-TTNB were searched in MEDLINE and EMBASE until October 2019. Diagnostic accuracy of EUS-TTNB for identification of mucinous PCLs was calculated using individual diagnostic data of patients who underwent CFC and surgery. Results …
Resistance of Conifer Needle Polyolefin Composites (CNPCs) Against Biodecomposition Caused by Fungi
2017
This study describes the resistance of composites filled with conifer needles to biodecomposition processes caused by a single strain of Aspergillus niger as well as by a consortium of microorganisms present in the compost substrates (forest or spent mushroom composts). The impact of various types of conifer needles on the growth of A. niger was studied to determine whether the filler can show the fungistatic effect. The changes in chemical composition of the composites surfaces were examined using attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR/ATR). The results showed that the fungistatic effects of conifer needles polyolefin composites (CNPCs) were associated w…
PERCUTANEOUS US (ULTRA SOUND) GUIDED FINE NEEDLE ASPIRATION (FNA) OF ENDOTHORACIC NEOPLASM
2022
Introduction: Ultrasound (US)-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA) of percutaneous, transparietal endothoracic lesions, is a useful method in the diagnostic process for anatomopathological characterization. This sampling is a minimally invasive procedure, with a low complication rate and can be performed under loco-regional anesthesia Material and methods: We retrospectively studied (2009 to 2019) the utility of US guided transthoracic FNA in the diagnosis of suspected endothoracic lesions on 54 patients (34 men and 20 women), aged between 44 and 79 years, with pleural, pulmonary or mediastinal neoplasm viewable with an US examination. Results: The definitive diagnosis of malignant or benign…
Assessment of the Mass and Surface Area of the Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) Needles
2022
The assessment of the surface area of all leaves from a tree crown is regarded as one of the key parameters in scaling ecophysiological processes, such as growth, carbon budget, and water management. The purpose of this study was to investigate the variation of the mass and surface area of Scots pine needles, obtained from trees growing in the same habitat conditions but at different stock densities, therefore occupying different biosocial positions. The mass of needles and the leaf area index (LAI) were determined for an even-aged 33-year-old Scots pine stand located at a fresh mixed coniferous forest site in southwest Poland (50°32′ N; 17°42′ E). The needles, collected…
