A second-order sparse factorization method for Poisson's equation with mixed boundary conditions

1992

Abstract We propose an algorithm for solving Poisson's equation on general two-dimensional regions with an arbitrary distribution of Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. The algebraic system, generated by the five-point star discretization of the Laplacian, is solved iteratively by repeated direct sparse inversion of an approximating system whose coefficient matrix — the preconditioner — is second-order both in the interior and on the boundary. The present algorithm for mixed boundary value problems generalizes a solver for pure Dirichlet problems (proposed earlier by one of the authors in this journal (1989)) which was found to converge very fast for problems with smooth solutions. The equality case in a Poincaré–Wirtinger type inequality

2016

It is known that, for any convex planar set W, the first non-trivial Neumann eigenvalue μ1 (Ω) of the Hermite operator is greater than or equal to 1. Under the additional assumption that Ω is contained in a strip, we show that β1 (Ω) = 1 if and only if Ω is any strip. The study of the equality case requires, among other things, an asymptotic analysis of the eigenvalues of the Hermite operator in thin domains.

Rolle's Theorem for Polynomials of Degree Four in a Hilbert Space

2002

AbstractIn an infinite-dimensional real Hilbert space, we introduce a class of fourth-degree polynomials which do not satisfy Rolle's Theorem in the unit ball. Extending what happens in the finite-dimensional case, we show that every fourth-degree polynomial defined by a compact operator satisfies Rolle's Theorem.

The metric-valued Lebesgue differentiation theorem in measure spaces and its applications

2021

We prove a version of the Lebesgue Differentiation Theorem for mappings that are defined on a measure space and take values into a metric space, with respect to the differentiation basis induced by a von Neumann lifting. As a consequence, we obtain a lifting theorem for the space of sections of a measurable Banach bundle and a disintegration theorem for vector measures whose target is a Banach space with the Radon-Nikod\'{y}m property.

A derivation of the isothermal quantum hydrodynamic equations using entropy minimization

2005

Isothermal quantum hydrodynamic equations of order O(h 2 ) using the quantum entropy minimization method recently developed by Degond and Ringhofer are derived. The equations have the form of the usual quantum hydrodynamic model including a correction term of order O(h 2 ) which involves the vorticity. If the initial vorticity is of order 0(h), the standard model is obtained up to order O(h 4 ). The derivation is based on a careful expansion of the quantum equilibrium obtained from the entropy minimization in powers of h 2 .

Sharp estimates for eigenfunctions of a Neumann problem

2009

In this paper we provide some bounds for the eigenfunctions of the Laplacian with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions in a bounded domain Ω of R^n. To this aim we use the so-called symmetrization techniques and the obtained estimates are asymptotically sharp, at least in the bidimensional case, when the isoperimetric constant relative to Ω goes to 0.

Generation of Frames

2004

It is well known that, given a generic frame, there exists a unique frame operator which satisfies, together with its adjoint, a double operator inequality. In this paper we start considering the inverse problem, that is how to associate a frame to certain operators satisfying the same kind of inequality. The main motivation of our analysis is the possibility of using frame theory in the discussion of some aspects of the quantum time evolution, both for open and for closed physical systems.

Exactly solvable time-dependent pseudo-Hermitian su(1,1) Hamiltonian models

2018

An exact analytical treatment of the dynamical problem for time-dependent 2x2 pseudo-hermitian su(1,1) Hamiltonians is reported. A class of exactly solvable and physically transparent new scenarios are identified within both classical and quantum contexts. Such a class is spanned by a positive parameter $\nu$ that allows to distinguish two different dynamical regimes. Our results are usefully employed for exactly solving a classical propagation problem in a guided wave optics scenario. The usefulness of our procedure in a quantum context is illustrated by defining and investigating the su(1,1) "Rabi" scenario bringing to light analogies and differences with the standard su(2) Rabi model. Optimal control of a three-level quantum system by laser fields plus von Neumann measurements

2008

International audience; We investigate the control of a three-level quantum system by laser fields assisted by von Neumann measurements. We consider a system which is not completely controllable by unitary evolution but which becomes controllable if particular measurements are used. The optimal control is defined from a cost functional which takes into account the measurements. The cost corresponds either to the minimization of the duration of the control or to the minimization of the energy of the laser field. Using the Pontryagin maximum principle, we determine the optimal control which steers the system from a given initial state toward a desired target state. This allows one to determin…

Dynamics of mean-field spin models from basic results in abstract differential equations

1992

The infinite-volume limit of the dynamics of (generalized) mean-field spin models is obtained through a direct analysis of the equations of motion, in a large class of representations of the spin algebra. The resulting dynamics fits into a general framework for systems with long-range interaction: variables at infinity appear in the time evolution of local variables and spontaneous symmetry breaking with an energy gap follows from this mechanism. The independence of the construction of the approximation scheme in finite volume is proven. © 1992 Plenum Publishing Corporation.
