Experimental and Theoretical Study of the Field Induced Phase Separation in Electro- and Magnetorheological Suspensions

1999

We present here the study of field induced phase separation in E.R. and M.R. fluids. Two thermodynamic models — one for the formation of chais of particles and the other for phase separation are presented and compared with experimental results obtained with two kinds of suspensions. One was made of silica particles in silicone oil and the other was made of magnetic polystyrene particles in water. In the presence of a flow the phase separation occurs with the dense phase forming a regular pattern of stripes. The dependence of the period of these stripes on the intensity of the magnetic field is well reproduced by the same kind of thermodynamic model if we add the effect of normal stresses i…

Two-color holographic-grating formation in amorphous As_2S_3 films

1998

A detailed experimental study of the holographic gratings recorded in nonannealed amorphous As2S3 films by 514.5-nm light in the presence of 632.8-nm readout light is carried out. A strong influence of a continuous 632.8-nm readout is found. The dependences of the maximal first-order diffraction efficiency and the corresponding specific recording energy on the holographic grating period were studied in a wide range of periods from 0.40 to 70.0 μm for 2-yr-old films. The obtained results are discussed in terms of photoinduced structural changes, relaxational structural changes, photoinduced anisotropy, and photoinduced recharging of the localized states in the bandgap. The photoinduced sulph…

Dispersion-optimized multicladding silicon nitride waveguides for nonlinear frequency generation from ultraviolet to mid-infrared

2016

Nonlinear frequency conversion spanning from the ultraviolet to the mid-infrared (beyond 2.4 μm) is experimentally demonstrated in multicladding silicon nitride (𝑆𝑖𝑋𝑁𝑌) waveguides. By adjusting the waveguide cross-section the chromatic dispersion is flattened, which enhances both the efficiency and the bandwidth of the nonlinear conversion. How accurately the dispersion is tailored is assessed through chromatic dispersion measurements and an experiment/simulation comparison of the dispersive waves' wavelength locations. Undesirable fluctuations of both the refractive index and the dimensions of the waveguide during the fabrication process result in a dispersion unpredictability of at l…

Electrospun TiO2 embedded nanofibers for photocatalytic applications

2019

The development of photocatalysts with low cost, high reactivity and easy recovery provides great potentials for environmental remediation. In this study, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers containing titanium dioxide ([Formula: see text]) nanoparticles were successfully fabricated using a facile electrospinning technique. The effects of [Formula: see text] content, PAN concentration and thermal treatment on the adsorption and photocatalysis properties of [Formula: see text] nanofibers have been investigated. The results indicate that the embedded [Formula: see text] nanofibers possess the property to effectively decompose rhodamine B (RhB) under simulated sunlight irradiation. The enhance…

Features of randomized electric-field assisted domain inversion in lithium tantalate

2011

We report on bulk and guided-wave second-harmonic generation via random Quasi-Phase-Matching in Lithium Tantalate. By acquiring the far-field profiles at several wavelengths, we extract statistical information on the distribution of the quadratic nonlinearity as well as its average period, both at the surface and in the bulk of the sample. By investigating the distribution in the two regions we demonstrate a non-invasive approach to the study of poling dynamics.

Electrostatic Control over Optically Pumped Hot Electrons in Optical Gap Antennas

2020

International audience; We investigate the influence of a static electric field on the incoherent nonlinear response of an unloaded electrically contacted nanoscale optical gap antenna. Upon excitation by a tightly focused near-infrared femtosecond laser beam, a transient elevated temperature of the electronic distribution results in a broadband emission of nonlinear photoluminescence (N-PL). We demonstrate a modulation of the yield at which driving photons are frequency up-converted by means of an external control of the electronic surface charge density. We show that the electron temperature and consequently the N-PL intensity can be enhanced or reduced depending on the command polarity a…

On the Use of L-shaped Granular Chains for the Assessment of Thermal Stress in Slender Structures

2014

Slender beams subjected to compressive load are common in civil engineering. The rapid in-situ measurement of this stress may help preventing structural anomalies. In this article, we describe the coupling mechanism between highly nonlinear solitary waves (HNSWs) propagating along an L- shaped granular system and a beam in contact with the gran- ular medium. We evaluate the use of these waves to measure stress in thermally loaded structures and to estimate the neutral temperature, i.e. the temperature at which the stress is null. We investigate numerically and experimentally one and two L- shaped chains of spherical particles in contact with a prismatic beam subjected to heat. We find that …

Seeded intermodal four-wave mixing in a highly multimode fiber

2018

International audience; We experimentally and theoretically investigate the process of seeded intermodal four-wave mixing in a graded-index multimode fiber, pumped in the normal dispersion regime. By using a fiber with a 100-mu m core diameter, we generate a parametric sideband in the C-band (1530-1565 nm), hence allowing the use of an erbium-based laser to seed the mixing process. To limit nonlinear coupling between the pump and the seed to low-order fiber modes, the waist diameter of the pump beam is properly adjusted. We observe that the superimposed seed stimulates the generation of new spectral sidebands. A detailed characterization of the spectral and spatial properties of these sideb…
