Somatic stem cells have been identified in multiple adult tissues. Whether self-renewal occurs symmetrically or asymmetrically is key to understanding long-term stem cell maintenance and generation of progeny for cell replacement. In the adult mouse brain, neural stem cells (NSCs) (B1 cells) are retained in the walls of the lateral ventricles (ventricular-subventricular zone [V-SVZ]). Bradykinin (BK)-mediated angioedema (AE) states are rare acquired or hereditary conditions involving localized edema of the subcutaneous and submucosal tissues. Citrated plasma from healthy volunteers or patients with hereditary angioedema (HAE) with normal level of C1-inhibitor (C1-INH) was used to investigate pathways of BK formation and breakdown relevant to AE physiopathology. The half-life of BK (100 nM) added to normal plasma was 34 s, a value that was increased ~12-fold when the angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor enalaprilat (130 nM) was added (enzyme immunoassay measurements). Blind source separation (BSS) is a signal processing tool, which is widely used in various fields. Examples include biomedical signal separation, brain imaging and economic time series applications. In BSS, one assumes that the observed $p$ time series are linear combinations of $p$ latent uncorrelated weakly stationary time series. The aim is then to find an estimate for an unmixing matrix, which transforms the observed time series back to uncorrelated latent time series. Present status and first results of the final focus beam line at the KEK Accelerator Test Facility

ATF2 is a final-focus test beam line which aims to focus the low emittance beam from the ATF damping ring to a vertical size of about 37 nm and to demonstrate nanometer level beam stability. Several advanced beam diagnostics and feedback tools are used. In December 2008, construction and installation were completed and beam commissioning started, supported by an international team of Asian, European, and U.S. scientists. The present status and first results are described.
Long-term follow-up of hepatitis C virus-positive patients with persistently normal serum transaminases

Material and methods. This study prospectively evaluated the progression of liver disease in a group of anti-HCV-positive patients with persistently normal ALT levels (PNALT) who were HCV-RNA positive. Patients selected for this study were those who presented with PNALT according to the Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (AISF) criteria in the year 1995/96 and underwent liver biopsy. They were divided into two groups according to their ALT evolution. Forty-five patients were included in this study. Results.
