A double mean field equation related to a curvature prescription problem

2019

We study a double mean field-type PDE related to a prescribed curvature problem on compacts surfaces with boundary. We provide a general blow-up analysis, then a Moser-Trudinger inequality, which gives energy-minimizing solutions for some range of parameters. Finally, we provide existence of min-max solutions for a wider range of parameters, which is dense in the plane if $$ is not simply connected.

Functional connectivity inference from fMRI data using multivariate information measures

2022

Abstract Shannon’s entropy or an extension of Shannon’s entropy can be used to quantify information transmission between or among variables. Mutual information is the pair-wise information that captures nonlinear relationships between variables. It is more robust than linear correlation methods. Beyond mutual information, two generalizations are defined for multivariate distributions: interaction information or co-information and total correlation or multi-mutual information. In comparison to mutual information, interaction information and total correlation are underutilized and poorly studied in applied neuroscience research. Quantifying information flow between brain regions is not explic…

Corresponding-pair procedure: a new approach to simulation of dichromatic color perception.

2004

The dichromatic color appearance of a chromatic stimulus T can be described if a stimulus S is found that verifies that a normal observer experiences the same sensation viewing S as a dichromat viewing T. If dichromatic and normal versions of the same color vision model are available, S can be computed by applying the inverse of the normal model to the descriptors of T obtained with the dichromatic model. We give analytical form to this algorithm, which we call the corresponding-pair procedure. The analytical form highlights the requisites that a color vision model must verify for this procedure to be used. To show the capabilities of the method, we apply the algorithm to different color vi…

May the force be with you: Transfer of healthy mitochondria from stem cells to stroke cells

2018

Stroke is a major cause of death and disability in the United States and around the world with limited therapeutic option. Here, we discuss the critical role of mitochondria in stem cell-mediated rescue of stroke brain by highlighting the concept that deleting the mitochondria from stem cells abolishes the cells’ regenerative potency. The application of innovative approaches entailing generation of mitochondria-voided stem cells as well as pharmacological inhibition of mitochondrial function may elucidate the mechanism underlying transfer of healthy mitochondria to ischemic cells, thereby providing key insights in the pathology and treatment of stroke and other brain disorders plagued with…

Fabra i l'Autoritat lingüística al país valencià: l'institut d'estudis valencians (1937-1939)

2020

2017

The critical reception of Jesus Moncada's work has been determined by critical debate that opposed rural literature and urban literature in the eighties of the twentieth century. From this perspective, the narrative of Moncada has been identified with the desire to preserve the memory of Mequinensa, disappeared under the water. The paper proposes a reading of author's work from the historiographic metafiction in which the exercise of memory is not to be understood as the desire to preserve against forgetting a lost world, but as a question about mechanisms of understanding of the real one, about conditionings and limits on access to knowledge of history and about relationship between fictio…

Aproximació a la morfosintaxi dels quantificadors en el català del segle XVII

2018

Our paper intends to analyse the sentences which have the quantifiers u (un), 'one', and cada u (cada un), 'everyone', in the Catalan language of the 17th century. This research studies specifically the cases of masculine singular form in external position in detail. The study shows that historically there are morphological alternations between the apocopated form (u) and non-apocopated form (un). But this variation suggests differences in Catalan dialects. Methodologically, the investigation is based on a large corpus of texts from the main Catalan dialects. We describe, classify and quantify the linguistic uses of the quantifiers studied, which reveals that several factors interact in var…

Axonal control of the adult neural stem cell niche.

2014

SummaryThe ventricular-subventricular zone (V-SVZ) is an extensive germinal niche containing neural stem cells (NSCs) in the walls of the lateral ventricles of the adult brain. How the adult brain’s neural activity influences the behavior of adult NSCs remains largely unknown. We show that serotonergic (5HT) axons originating from a small group of neurons in the raphe form an extensive plexus on most of the ventricular walls. Electron microscopy revealed intimate contacts between 5HT axons and NSCs (B1) or ependymal cells (E1) and these cells were labeled by a transsynaptic viral tracer injected into the raphe. B1 cells express the 5HT receptors 2C and 5A. Electrophysiology showed that acti…
