PROGNOSTIC VALUE OF LUNG ULTRASOUND IN OLDER NURSING HOME RESIDENTS AFFECTED BY COVID-19

2020

Objectives: Lung ultrasonographic (LUS) imaging may play an important role in the management of patients with COVID-19–associated lung injury, particularly in some special populations. However, data regarding the prognostic role of the LUS in nursing home residents, one of the populations most affected by COVID-19, are not still available. Design: Retrospective. Settings and Participants: Nursing home residents affected by COVID-19 were followed up with an LUS from April 8 to May 14, 2020, in Chioggia, Venice. Methods: COVID-19 was diagnosed through a nasopharyngeal swab. LUS results were scored using a 12-zone method. For each of the 12 zones (2 posterior, 2 anterior, 2 lateral, for both l…

Setting Burgundy (France), EDs and medical nursing homes (MNHs). Participants 1000 Burgundy MNH residents admitted to EDs, from April 17 to June 20, 2013. Measurements For each subject, a questionnaire was completed. Data included age, gender, type of health professional who referred the resident to the ED (THP), whether or not a medical dispatcher organized the transfer to the ED, transport mode, reason for admission to the ED, level of independence according to the Groupes Iso-Ressource score (GIRS), an…

A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT TO OVERTURN PREJUDICES ON ALZHEIMER’S DISEASE IN NURSING HOMES USING ARTISTIC PHOTOGRAPHY

2016

It is widely known that Alzheimer’s disease is burdened with strong prejudices with negative connotations. This may contribute to increase patient’s isolation and marginalization, and to render Nursing Homes places of confinement and seclusion. Residents with dementia have trouble in relating with the outside world and in expressing themselves about their own disease, due to their cognitive decline, but also because of marginalization. We used artistic photography as an accessible and effective tool to bring down barriers and encourage residents’ communication. Artistic photography is the most immediate and accessible form of art for all people. The aim of our social experiment was to help …

RISK FACTORS FOR MORTALITY IN A SAMPLE OF NURSING HOME RESIDENTS

2016

Malnutrition is highly prevalent in geriatric populations, particularly in persons living in Nursing Homes (NH). Inadequate nutrition is one of the main risk factors for the onset of frailty and may contribute to the subsequent development of disability and mortality among NH residents. An optimal nutritional status and, wherever necessary, supplementation with macronutrients and micronutrients, may reduce the risk of mortality. Dementia is also prevalent among NH residents. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the relationship between mortality, and several risk factors and clinical characteristics of NH residents, including disability, nutritional status, and cognitive decline in …

Prevention of Functional Decline by Reframing the Role of Nursing Homes?

2017

Institutionalization is generally a consequence of functional decline driven by physical limitations, cognitive impairments, and/or loss of social supports. At this stage, intervention to reverse functional losses is often too late. To be more effective, geriatric medicine must evolve to intervene at an earlier stage of the disability process. Could nursing homes (NHs) transform from settings in which many residents dwell to settings in which the NH residents and those living in neighboring communities benefit from staff expertise to enhance quality of life and maintain or slow functional decline? A task force of clinical researchers met in Toulouse on December 2, 2015, to address some of t…
