Consequences of Sarcopenia in Older People: The Epidemiological Evidence
2021
Sarcopenia is a common condition in older people. Increasing literature is showing its importance for negative health outcomes, also beyond the perimeter of geriatric medicine. In this chapter, we will discuss the consequences of sarcopenia. Overall, epidemiological research suggests that sarcopenia is significantly associated with falls and fractures also suggesting a strong association between muscle and bone loss conditions, as in the case of osteosarcopenia. Moreover, sarcopenia is associated with disability, hospitalization (particularly in older people already hospitalized), and finally mortality. Increasing research is also showing that sarcopenia is associated with negative outcomes…
Healthy lifestyle and academic performance in middle school students from the region of Aragón (Spain)
2021
A healthy lifestyle is important to the present and future development and health of school age people. This study aims to analyze the relationship between daily lifestyle habits and academic performance in a sample of adolescents from the autonomous community of Aragon (Spain). We performed a cross-sectional study to analyze the lifestyle habits and academic performance of a total of 1745 7th and 8th grade middle school students during the academic year 2018–2019
The effects of light volleyball intervention programme in improving selected physical and psychological attributes of older adults in Hong Kong
2018
Previous research has demonstrated improvements in health outcomes through participation in light volleyball (LVB) among older adults in China (He, 2009). This study examined the effects of a 15-we...
Trends in self-rated health in European and North-American adolescents from 2002 to 2010 in 32 countries
2015
© 2015 The Author. Published by Oxford University Press on behalf of the European Public Health Association. All rights reserved. Background: Self-rated health (SRH) in adolescence is known to be associated with health outcomes in later life. We carried out a trend analysis on data coming from three waves of data collected in 32 countries (mostly European) from 2002 to 2010 coming from the Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children surveys. Methods: SRH in adolescents was assessed using a Likert scale (excellent, good, fair and poor). Responses were dichotomized into 'excellent' vs. 'rest'. Country, age and gender groups were compared based on the odds ratio of declaring excellent SRH in 2010…

Sarcopenia and health-related outcomes: an umbrella review of observational studies
2019
Key summary pointsAimTo investigate associations of sarcopenia with adverse health-related outcomes, through an umbrella review method.FindingsSarcopenia appears to be significantly associated with several adverse outcomes in older people, with a strong evidence for increased risk of mortality, disability, and falls.MessageSarcopenia is associated with several adverse health-related outcomes in older people, indicating the need of assessing this condition in daily practice. AbstractBackgroundThe clinical relevance of sarcopenia has increasingly been recognized. However, whether it is associated with the development of other medical conditions is still unclear. Therefore, we aimed to capture…
The role of health literacy in explaining regional health differences among adolescents
2019
Abstract Background Health disparities in adolescence track forward to adulthood. In understanding disparities better, health literacy (HL) - as a broad range of health-related competencies - has been identified as a valuable construct. Higher HL has been associated with better health outcomes, also among adolescents. Not much is known about how language or region in a bilingual country is associated with HL, or how HL is associated with regional health disparities. The aim of this study, in a bilingual country, was a) to examine and compare HL and health levels among majority and minority language speaking adolescents in different regions of Finland, and b) to explore if HL explains possib…
Handgrip strength and health outcomes: Umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies
2020
Highlights • We carried out an umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies on handgrip strength and all health outcomes. • Three outcomes (lower all-cause mortality, lower cardiovascular mortality, and lower risk of disability) were found to have highly suggestive evidence. • One outcome (chair rise performance over time) was found to have suggestive evidence. • Five outcomes (walking speed, inability to balance, hospital admissions, cardiac death, and mortality in those with chronic kidney disease) were found to have weak evidence.
Telemedicina en el manejo de pacientes con enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal
2017
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic and relapsing disorder with significant medical, social and financial impacts. IBD patients require continuous follow-up, and healthcare resource use in this context increases over time. In the last decade, telemedicine has influenced the treatment of chronic diseases like IBD via the application of information and communication technologies to provide healthcare services remotely. Telemedicine and its various applications (telemanagement, teleconsulting and tele-education) enable closer follow-up and provide education resources that promote patient empowerment, encouraging treatment optimisation over the entire course of the disease. We describ…
Enhancing policy design and sustainable community outcomes through collaborative platforms based on a dynamic performance management and governance a…
2022
This chapter aims at illustrating how a Dynamic Performance Management and Governance approach may support the implementation of “collaborative platforms” (Ansell and Gash, 2018) to enhance network policy design and the pursuit of sustainable community outcomes. This is an emerging field of research, embracing performance management, collaborative governance, and systems theory, aimed at fostering a learning-oriented perspective in performance data use. Such a view has been also referred as “collaborative performance management”, i.e., the “sharing of resources and information among different actors for the purposes of achieving a formal performance goal” (Choi and Moynihan, 2019, p. 1539).…
