Health and the war. Changing schemes and health conditions during the Spanish civil war

2008

This paper focuses on the health reforms during the republican Spain (1931-1939) and the crisis derived from the three-year of civil war. It considers how the war affected the health system and the impairment of health conditions of the population during the late 1930s, considering the changing conditions caused by the conflict. Some of the specific topics analysed are the changing healthcare system, the adaptation of health organization after the outbreak of the war, the impact of the war on the health of the population and epidemiological changes, the problem of the refugees and the clinical studies by experts, mainly on undernourishment.

A FTIR study on low hydration saccharide amorphous matrices: Thermal behaviour of the Water Association Band

2011

Abstract We report a study on the thermal behaviour of the infrared Water Association Band (WAB) in dry binary saccharide–water systems (containing trehalose, sucrose, maltose, and raffinose). This is a follow-up of preceding studies on analogous carboxymyoglobin-saccharide–water ternary systems, which pointed out a mutual protein-matrix influence (coupling). A comparison between binary and ternary systems, for all the saccharides studied, evidences a reduction in the residual water content in the latter and, except for trehalose, a sizable modification in the thermal behaviour, which is discussed in terms of structure and hydrogen bonding properties of the sugars. The study allowed us also…

Gully Erosion Susceptibility Mapping Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines—Replications and Sample Size Scenarios

2019

Soil erosion is a serious problem affecting numerous countries, especially, gully erosion. In the current research, GIS techniques and MARS (Multivariate Adaptive Regression Splines) algorithm were considered to evaluate gully erosion susceptibility mapping among others. The study was conducted in a specific section of the Gorganroud Watershed in Golestan Province (Northern Iran), covering 2142.64 km2 which is intensely influenced by gully erosion. First, Google Earth images, field surveys, and national reports were used to provide a gully-hedcut evaluation map consisting of 307 gully-hedcut points. Eighteen gully erosion conditioning factors including significant geoenvironmental and morph…

Pseudodifferential operators of Beurling type and the wave front set

2008

AbstractWe investigate the action of pseudodifferential operators of Beurling type on the wave front sets. More precisely, we show that these operators are microlocal, that is, preserve or reduce wave front sets. Some consequences on micro-hypoellipticity are derived.

Communication in new technology based‐firms

2013

PurposeThe paper aims at identifying the main social media applications used by new technology based‐firms (NTBFs) and at calculating the volume of followers they have in each application. It also focuses on the amount of activity generated by the firms in those social networks, identifying the key thematic content of their social media activity, analyzing the ability to create dialogue with their stakeholders and clarifying which style of communication they use.Design/methodology/approachThe paper presents an exploratory study of the use of social media tools by NTBFs, located in Spanish Science Parks, as an important resource network for firms in the corresponding sector. A total of 432 n…

Context DataModel Framework: semantic facilities management

2008

Facility management is the practice of coordinating the physical workplace with the people and work of the organisation. It integrates the principles of business administration, architecture and the behavioural and engineering sciences. Software dedicated to facility management are usually limited to spreadsheet software. With the development of the Industry Foundation Class (IFC; a new object-oriented standard to model buildings) and web-based networks, a new generation of methods and tools dedicated to facility management are required. To deal with these requirements, we have developed a framework based on Semantic Web technologies: RDF, Ontology Web Language (OWL), Semantic Web Rule Lang…

Two ways to handle dependent uncertainties in multi-criteria decision problems☆

2009

Abstract We consider multi-criteria group decision-making problems, where the decision makers (DMs) want to identify their most preferred alternative(s) based on uncertain or inaccurate criteria measurements. In many real-life problems the uncertainties may be dependent. In this paper, we focus on multicriteria decision-making (MCDM) problems where the criteria and their uncertainties are computed using a stochastic simulation model. The model is based on decision variables and stochastic parameters with given distributions. The simulation model determines for the criteria a joint probability distribution, which quantifies the uncertainties and their dependencies. We present and compare two…

Relation between quasirigidity andL-rigidity in space-times of constant curvature and weak fields

1997

The relation between quasirigidity andL-rigidity in space-times of constant nonzero curvature and in space-times with small curvature (weak fields) is studied. The covariant expansion of bitensors about a point is considered. We obtain an increase in the order of magnitude, underL-rigidity conditions, of the rate of change with respect to a comoving orthonormal frame of the linear momentum, angular momentum, and reduced multipole moments of the energy-momentum tensor. Thus,L-rigidity leads to quasirigidity in such space-times.

Property (w) and perturbations III

2009

AbstractThe property (w) is a variant of Weyl's theorem, for a bounded operator T acting on a Banach space. In this note we consider the preservation of property (w) under a finite rank perturbation commuting with T, whenever T is polaroid, or T has analytical core K(λ0I−T)={0} for some λ0∈C. The preservation of property (w) is also studied under commuting nilpotent or under injective quasi-nilpotent perturbations. The theory is exemplified in the case of some special classes of operators.

Relations between multi-resolution analysis and quantum mechanics

2005

We discuss a procedure to construct multiresolution analyses (MRA) of L2 (R) starting from a given seed function h (s) which should satisfy some conditions. Our method, originally related to the quantum mechanical Hamiltonian of the fractional quantum Hall effect, is shown to be model independent. The role of a canonical map between certain canonically conjugate operators is discussed. This clarifies our previous procedure and makes much easier most of the original formulas, producing a convenient framework to produce examples of MRA. © 2005 American Institute of Physics.
