On ergodic operator means in Banach spaces

2016

We consider a large class of operator means and prove that a number of ergodic theorems, as well as growth estimates known for particular cases, continue to hold in the general context under fairly mild regularity conditions. The methods developed in the paper not only yield a new approach based on a general point of view, but also lead to results that are new, even in the context of the classical Cesaro means.

An elementary proof of Hilbertʼs theorem on ternary quartics

2012

Abstract In 1888, Hilbert proved that every nonnegative quartic form f = f ( x , y , z ) with real coefficients is a sum of three squares of quadratic forms. His proof was ahead of its time and used advanced methods from topology and algebraic geometry. Up to now, no elementary proof is known. Here we present a completely new approach. Although our proof is not easy, it uses only elementary techniques. As a by-product, it gives information on the number of representations f = p 1 2 + p 2 2 + p 3 2 of f up to orthogonal equivalence. We show that this number is 8 for generically chosen f, and that it is 4 when f is chosen generically with a real zero. Although these facts were known, there wa…

Domains of accretive operators in Banach spaces

2016

LetD(A)be the domain of anm-accretive operatorAon a Banach spaceE. We provide sufficient conditions for the closure ofD(A)to be convex and forD(A)to coincide withEitself. Several related results and pertinent examples are also included.

A note on the Banach space of preregular maps

2011

The aim of this paper is to give simple proofs for Jeurnink's characterizations of preregular maps in terms of Θ-maps acting between Banach lattices. For Banach lattices E and F, we achieve our goal by considering the space Lβ(E, F) of all those linear maps T: E → F for which there exists a constant K such that {double pipe}Vn i=1 {pipe}Txi{pipe} ≤ K {double pipe}Vn i=1{pipe}xi for all finite sequences x1, ..., xn e{open}E. We show that, if Lβ(E; F), and the spaces L Θ (E; F) of Θ -map and Lpr(E; F) of preregular maps are respectively endowed with their canonical norms, then they are identical Banach spaces

Semigroups of composition operators and integral operators in spaces of analytic functions

2013

We study the maximal spaces of strong continuity on BMOA and the Bloch space B for semigroups of composition operators. Characterizations are given for the cases when these maximal spaces are V MOA or the little Bloch B0. These characterizations are in terms of the weak compactness of the resolvent function or in terms of a specially chosen symbol g of an integral operator Tg. For the second characterization we prove and use an independent result, namely that the operators Tg are weakly compact on the above mentioned spaces if and only if they are compact.

Graph connectivity and monadic NP

2002

Ehrenfeucht games are a useful tool in proving that certain properties of finite structures are not expressible by formulas of a certain type. In this paper a new method is introduced that allows the extension of a local winning strategy for Duplicator, one of the two players in Ehrenfeucht games, to a global winning strategy. As an application it is shown that graph connectivity cannot be expressed by existential second-order formulas, where the second-order quantification is restricted to unary relations (monadic NP), even, in the presence of a built-in linear order. As a second application it is stated, that, on the other hand, the presence of a linear order increases the power of monadi…

Factorization of homomorphisms through H∞(D)

2003

AbstractWeakly compact homomorphisms between (URM) algebras with connected maximal ideal space are shown to factor through H∞(D) by means of composition operators and to be strongly nuclear. The spectrum of such homomorphisms is also described. Strongly nuclear composition operators between algebras of bounded analytic functions are characterized. The path connected components of the space of endomorphisms on H∞(D) in the uniform operator topology are determined.

General duality in vector optimization

1993

Vector minimization of a relation F valued in an ordered vector space under a constraint A consists in finding x 0 ∊ A w,0 ∊ Fx$0 such that w,0 is minimal in FA. To a family of vector minimization problemsminimize , one associates a Lagrange relation where ξ belongs to an arbitrary class Ξ of mappings, the main purpose being to recover solutions of the original problem from the vector minimization of the Lagrange relation for an appropriate ξ. This ξ turns out to be a solution of a dual vector maximization problem. Characterizations of exact and approximate duality in terms of vector (generalized with respect to Ξ) convexity and subdifferentiability are given. They extend the theory existin…

Unary Languages Recognized by Two-Way One-Counter Automata

2014

A two-way deterministic finite state automaton with one counter (2D1CA) is a fundamental computational model that has been examined in many different aspects since sixties, but we know little about its power in the case of unary languages. Up to our knowledge, the only known unary nonregular languages recognized by 2D1CAs are those formed by strings having exponential length, where the exponents form some trivial unary regular language. In this paper, we present some non-trivial subsets of these languages. By using the input head as a second counter, we present simulations of two-way deterministic finite automata with linearly bounded counters and linear–space Turing machines. We also show …
