Weyl type theorems for bounded linear operators on Banach spaces

2011

In 1909 H. Weyl [59] studied the spectra of all compact linear perturbations of a self-adjoint operator defined on a Hilbert space and found that their intersection consisted precisely of those points of the spectrum where are not isolated eigenvalues of nite multiplicity. Later, the property established by Weyl for self-adjoint operators has been observed for several other classes of operators, for instance hyponormal operators on Hilbert spaces, Toeplitz operators, convolution operators on group algebras, and many other classes of operators ned on Banach spaces . In the literature, a bounded linear operator defined on a Banach space which satisfies this property is said to satisfy Weyl's t…

Some characterizations of operators satisfying a-Browder's theorem

2005

Abstract We characterize the bounded linear operators T defined on Banach spaces satisfying a-Browder's theorem, or a-Weyl's theorem, by means of the discontinuity of some maps defined on certain subsets of C . Several other characterizations are given in terms of localized SVEP, as well as by means of the quasi-nilpotent part, the hyper-kernel or the analytic core of λ I − T .

New Encodings of Pseudo-Boolean Constraints into CNF

2009

International audience; This paper answers affirmatively the open question of the existence of a polynomial size CNF encoding of pseudo-Boolean (PB) constraints such that generalized arc consistency (GAC) is maintained through unit propagation (UP). All previous encodings of PB constraints either did not allow UP to maintain GAC, or were of exponential size in the worst case. This paper presents an encoding that realizes both of the desired properties. From a theoretical point of view, this narrows the gap between the expressive power of clauses and the one of pseudo-Boolean constraints.

Homeomorphisms of Finite Distortion

2013

In this chapter we establish the optimal regularity of the inverse mapping in higher dimensions and optimal Sobolev regularity for composites. Moreover, we establish optimal moduli of continuity for mappings in our classes and we discuss orientation preservation and approximation of Sobolev homeomorphisms.

Control of Production-Distribution Systems under Discrete Disturbances and Control Actions

2011

This paper deals with the robust control and optimization of production-distribution systems. The model used in our problem formulation is a general network flow model that describes production, logistics, and transportation applications. The novelty in our formulation is in the discrete nature of the control and disturbance inputs. We highlight three main contributions: First, we derive a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of robustly control invariant hyperboxes. Second, we show that a stricter version of the same condition is sufficient for global convergence to an invariant set. Third, for the scalar case, we show that these results parallel existing results in the set…

Trust, mistrust and distrust as blind spots of Social Licence to Operate: illustration via three forerunner countries in nuclear waste management

2021

The notion of social licence to operate (SLO) has become a widely applied concept for companies in mining and resource extraction industries to manage their social and community relations, in the face of local criticism and opposition. SLO literature and practice have highlighted earning the trust of the local community as a key requirement for an SLO. This article addresses three weaknesses in how the current SLO literature addresses trust. The arguments are illustrated via examples from nuclear waste management in Finland, France and Sweden–three forerunners in implementing high-level nuclear waste repository projects. Nuclear waste management constitutes a relevant case for analysis, as …

Unravelling the moderating effects of size and experience on product innovations and exports: a study in a medium knowledge-intensive industry

2012

This paper contributes to improve our knowledge on the important role of product innovation in export strategy by introducing the moderating effects of organizational variables. We argue that in a medium knowledge-intensive industry, these variables might strengthen the relationship between innovations and exports. Research on innovation and export strategy has addressed these issues increasingly during last decades; however, the divergence on the empirical approaches difficult the understanding of the linkages among variables, which are highly dependent on the industry technological characteristics. We carry out a time-lagged study using the literature-based innovation output (LBIO) method…

Asymmetric behaviour of biotechnology business patterns in Spain

2009

Since the end of the 90s there has been an increase in the emergence of biotechnology industries in Spain, partially as a result of growing support from institutionally based infrastructures. Through the use of empirical fieldwork, this study aims to reveal how future prospects are not as optimistic as most Spanish agents perceive. Our conclusions are based on the asymmetric behaviour shown by Spanish biotechnology firms in their business models. This asymmetry is based on the overwhelming dominance of business models centred on low investment, limited R&D expenditure and minor or incremental innovation, whereas the long term–long return model, which prevails in the leading countries in thi…
