Donor and host B cell-derived IL-10 contributes to suppression of graft-versus-host disease

Graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) is a frequent life-threatening complication following allogeneic HSC transplantation (HSCT). IL-10 is a regulatory cytokine with important roles during GvHD, yet its relevant sources, and mode of action, remain incompletely defined in this disease. Using IL-10-deficient donor or host mice (BALB/c or C57BL/6, respectively) in a MHC-mismatched model for acute GvHD, we found a strongly aggravated course of the disease with increased mortality when either donor or host cells could not produce this cytokine. Thyroid papillary carcinoma infarction after fine needle aspiration

Complications following fine needle aspiration (FNA) are very infrequent and generally resolve spontaneously without treatment. The appearance of necrosis or infarction after FNA of the thyroid gland is an exceptional finding. An 83-year-old woman with a thyroid nodule was subjected to diagnostic FNA using a G23 needle. The patient noted a decrease in nodule size after FNA. A total thyroidectomy was performed 36 days after FNA. The cytological diagnosis was papillary carcinoma. Histology revealed massive coagulation necrosis affecting 80% of the tumor mass; the cytological diagnosis was confirmed. Tremendous advances have been made in replacement therapy regimens for the correction of immunodeficiency in transplant patients. Recently, cultured thymic fragments were shown to be devoid of lethal graft-versus-host cells and research in this area indicates that thymic transplantation may have a sustained positive effect in immunosuppressed patients.
Mapping onto ideal chains overestimates self-entanglements in polymer melts

In polymer physics it is typically assumed that excluded volume interactions are effectively screened in polymer melts. Hence, chains could be described by an effective random walk without excluded volume interactions. In this letter, we show that this mapping is problematic by analyzing the occurrence of knots, their spectrum and sizes in polymer melts, corresponding random walks and chains in dilute solution. The effective random walk severely overrates the occurrence of knots and their complexity, particularly when compared to melts of flexible chains, indicating that non-trivial effects due to remnants of self-avoidance still play a significant role for the chain lengths considered in t…
Responses of soil carbon and nitrogen transformations to stump removal

We studied in central Finland whether stump harvesting after clear felling of coniferous forest poses further short-term changes in soil carbon and nitrogen dynamics when compared to the traditional site preparation method, mounding. Exposed mineral soil patches in Norway spruce (Picea abies) dominated clear-cut stands were sampled 1â5 years after the treatments. The extent of the exposed mineral soil surface was significantly larger at the stump removal sites when compared to the mounding sites.
